Living Colour Perform “Cult of Personality” on Jimmy Kimmel: Watch
Ahh, Jimmy Kimmel. He’s been quite literally the talk of the town—and I don’t really need to elaborate on that—so having this particular band performing this particular feels deliberate and honestly, great. Living Colour was the musical guest on last night’s (Thursday, October 2) episode, performing their breakout single “Cult of Personality.” It was effective.
Since this is the first week Kimmel has returned to his show after it was cancelled and then revived by the hacks at FCC and ABC, it makes sense that this sort of sentiment would be expressed at some point. If somehow you haven’t heard the song, that came out in 1988, its concept is all about the fallacy of power and selling an ideal that likely won’t come to fruition. Its lyrics are like a knife cutting through the tragedy of our reality, dropping names like Mussolini and Stalin (the evil bitches), and John F. Kennedy and Gandhi (the less evil bitches) as examples while mixing in audio snippets from political speeches. The track alone is a statement, but it coming from an all-black metal band is an even bigger one.
I mean, how does THIS not sound annoyingly familiar?: “I sell the things you need to be/I’m the smiling face on your TV/Oh, I’m the cult of personality.” If that doesn’t scream big booty Cheeto, then I don’t know what does.
