GWAR Featured on ‘Last Week Tonight,’ Bidet Signed by Blöthar Being Auctioned for Charity

If there’s one thing you should know about GWAR, it’s that they’re really big fans of public media. Well, you should also know they’re part of the Scumdogs of the Universe who were such massive fuckups that they were banished to Earth for eternity because this planet sucks so bad that living here is considered punishment for their crimes. But you should still keep in mind that they’re pro-public media like NPR.

That little tidbit of information is important, because they were featured in last night’s episode of HBO’s hit news/information/comedy show Last Week Tonight with John Oliver. In a clip that can only be described as a mild fever dream, British comedian and show host John Oliver talks about GWAR and more specifically their frontman, Blöthar the Berserker, was espousing the importance of public media here in America.

For context, the segment in question was discussing the importance of public media and how the Trump administration’s decision to cut $1.1 billion of federal funds from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) would be devastating for many communities across the country. So to go from small-town radio host to Blöthar’s rotting udder-dicks is pretty damn jarring. But let’s not forget GWAR played the Tiny Desk, so they’re uniquely entwined with public media.

But if you thought the clip was the only instance of GWAR showing up in the episode, you’d be wrong. One of the main payoffs for this week’s episode is the fact that John Oliver is auctioning off a ton of bullshit he’s used on the show for a gag with the funds generated eventually getting donated to the CPB. If you check out the auction website, one curiosity is nestled between the authentic Bob Ross panting and a big ol’ set of brass testicles is a bidet signed by Blöthar himself — it’s part of a gag on the show, you’ll have to watch the clip below to get it.

Still, it’s a great mention of an iconic metal band for a great cause. If you have the means, you should check out JohnOliversJunk.com to see if there’s anything you can put a bid in for the sake of public media and information.
