Dream Theater’s Mike Portnoy Debuts His Limited-Edition Tama Signature Snare Drum
There’s so much we can say about Mike Portnoy. All good things, obviously, and outside of his sheer and incredible talent, one of the things that stands out about what he does is the instrument he plays behind. His purple “Dream Monster” kit is a beautiful fuckin beast, and now that Dream Theater are triumphantly back in the collective ether, you can have your own “copy” of one of Portnoy’s key drum pieces.
Portnoy’s purple beast now has a baby thanks to drum makers Tama, who just dropped a limited-edition release snare drum with the same violet finish as his signature “Dream Monster.”
Limited to only 500 worldwide, this Tama signature drum breaks down with the following specifications:
Model No.: MP1455BUN
Shell: 8mm, 9ply Bubinga
Size: 14″x5.5″
Lug: MSL-SCT
Hoop: Die-Cast Hoop (8 hole)
Strainer/Butt: MCS100A/MCS70B
Snare Wire: MS20SN14S
With an 8mm thick, 9-ply construction, the drum’s Bubinga shell is paired with 8-lug die-cast hoops for a rich yet crisp, tone. Each drum is hand-painted, so even though they’ll all have that vibrant purple sparkle, no two will look the same.
