Report: Metallica’s Close to Landing a Residency Deal at the Las Vegas Sphere

Move over U2, Phish, Eagles, Dead & Company, and whoever else has played the Las Vegas Sphere — a new report is suggesting that it’s likely that the biggest metal band of all time will be taking over that unique venue in the near future. And of course by “biggest metal band”, we mean Metallica.

According to a report by The Sun, sources in “Sin City” have spoken on condition of anonymity that the legendary Bay Area band is nearing a deal for a residency at the rotund and high tech venue. Initial details suggest the process is 90% done, with the residency supposedly starting next year. It’s so close that apparently contracts exist, they just haven’t been signed yet.

“Metallica having a residency at the Sphere is all anyone is talking about on the [Las Vgeas] Strip. They have been to see the bosses and met all the tech team to talk through and plan out a show in principle.”

For those that don’t know much about the Las Vegas Sphere, it’s a top-of-the-line live venue that stands 366 feet tall and 516 feet wide, making it the world’s largest spherical structure. And while the exterior is wrapped in a ridiculously high fidelity LED display, the coolest part is what it’s got on the inside: a full 16K resolution wraparound screen and cutting edge audio tech designed to let fans become completely immersed in the performance.

The resulting experience is unlike any other live music venue in the world, as the music and visuals literally surround you on all sides. The displays also allow whoever’s playing there to curate the experience, ensuring that art and animations that match the music being played are displayed in real time.

There’s been talk about this happening for some time. Last summer, Vital Vegas reported that there was a chance the thrash band would play the location. Additionally, various members of the band have expressed interest in playing the spot.

So now apparently all we have to do now is wait for the inevitable announcement and revelation that the ticket prices will be astronomical because of course they will be.
