THE DEFINITION OF METAL: NORTHERN KINGS COVERING TINA TURNER
Thursday, January 3rd, 2008 at 1:28pm by Vince NeilsteinIronic metal covers of decidedly non-metal songs are definitely passe, but exceptions have to be made when there’s nary a trace of irony. Northern Kings, the new Finnish band consisting of J. Ahola (Teräsbetoni), Marco Hietala (Tarot, Nightwish), Tony Kakko (Sonata Arctica), J-P Leppäluoto (Charon) have a new all-covers album called Reborn, including the Tina Turner smash “We Don’t Need Another Hero,” video below. (The album also features covers of Peter Gabriel, Radiohead, Dire Straits, Billy Idol, and more).
Check out some other audio samples at Northern Kings’ MySpace page.
This, my friends, is fucking metal. These guys really mean it; NO MORE FUCKING HEROES, OK???

Can four vocalists with some generic Finnish/Swedish/Norwegian/Whatever backing band with the ubiquitous and passé keyboards prevalent in the mix really be called a “band”?
Metal boyband?
Who cares, their Journey cover is pretty much amazing.
Now if someone would just cover the power ballad from Spongebob.
I like Northern Kings very much because of they are good at singing. It’s not just average screaming but great singing. Listen to Brothers in Arms (http://youtube.com/watch?v=oFp5s-UWP8Q) and I Just Died in Your Arms Tonight (http://youtube.com/watch?v=coQBG8yH3Vk) in that album and you know what I mean. They really sound good.
Oh, I just forgot to mention that they sold gold here in Finland.
What the hell is this, Finnish Metal Idol?? Who’s supposed to listen to them, me or my grandparents? Seriously, I can’t stop laughing…
