DARKTHRONE’S FENRIZ IS KIND OF AN ASSHOLE

Metal Maniacs: Prior to recording “F.O.A.D.”, were you conscious that you’d divide the Darkthrone fanbase, or potential fans, even more severely than you did with “The Cult Is Alive”?

Fenriz: The mere word “fanbase” disgusts me. WTF! Get down and boogie! If you’d done THAT, you wouldn’t talk about such things as fanbases or opinions. I know I don’t, but because of these interviews, I have to lessen my world with this crap. We get cooler bands contacting us with support now than ever before; my contacts have never been a better and more credible bunch of people.

Seriously? Your fans are the entire reason you have a career. “Lesson my world” with these interviews? Who the fuck do you think you are? If you didn’t want to lesson your world you should’ve declined the interview, dickwad.

Metal Maniacs: Would it have been possible to make an album like “F.O.A.D.” in 1995, when you’d just left your “classic” Peaceville period and began to forge a newer but differently primitive period for Darkthrone with the awesome “Panzerfaust”?

Fenriz: I say on our “The Cult Is Alive” album: “you contra-fact history-writer — you should be fed to the living dead of Nairobi.” What could have been is a waste of energy, to put it mildly. “The Cult Is Alive” is the natural follow up to “Under A Funeral Moon”. To zest your plate of food…

Great, insult the press, that’ll do you really well.

Metal Maniacs: What do you say, then, to all those fans and bands who want Darkthrone to sound like that classic Peaceville black metal trilogy forever? Are the links between now and then more there than people think?

Fenriz: Zzzzzzzzzz. Of course it is. In the land of the blind, the one-eyed king is god. Just wait till these people grow up and see the big pattern of metal, rock and punk. Sadly but perhaps necessarily, they are in the zone and can’t see clearly but very vividly.

Continue insulting your fans there, bucko. Seriously, I don’t care how important or influential Darkrthone was. This guys is an ASSHOLE with a capital ASS.

    I just feel sorry for the guy. It must be a pretty lonely place to believe that everyone else in the world doesnt get it. Even if you get it, and that is a great feeling, than knowing that nobody else understands the big picture must be very sobering.

    i agree with the (vague) statements he put in that portion of the interview…why let fans dictate his musical output? If you’re along for the ride, fine, but if not, go make your own seminal release. Easy as that.

    Personally, maybe because of my age somewhat coinciding, but i like newer Darkthrone i think more than old Darkthrone lol.

    just noticed the newest 2 posts… but i think he was meaning the “one eyed king” as narrow minded people who can only listen to a “certain type of black metal” let alone different types of black metal, let alone different styles of music…alot of people are close minded and tranfer that into elitism…which is ridiculous…

    i think ill have to get the mag for the full interview, but i think everyone is overlooking the obvious questions that should have been asked…that is, about the new record, what inspired what songs, what is “X” song about, etc…instead of “hey, remember that time period 15 years ago, and you know all those people that bitch about that, well here’s several questions about that”…kinda like having to endure questions about that fat chick with the beard you finger banged in 8th grade…but hey you were able to say you were the first to finger bang…yknow?

    @ Axl: hahahaha. It’s always hilarious when semi-famous people screw up common expressions (like when Bush said “it isnt rocket surgery”). However, what he said can theoretically make sense. Maybe the one eyed man was made king because his sight allows him to be a more proficient warrior–and aren’t battlefield heroes revered as Gods (at least in the olden days, and isnt that where this guy is stuck anyway?). Just sayin, maybe this guy really is a genius…

    Actually, I like that he has such an attitude towards the fanbase. Fenriz has stated in previous interviews that he doesn’t do Darkthrone for the money, that he has a regular office job (in the post office or something?) so he could give a fuck what the albums sell. Thus, he feels no pressure to compromise his sound in order to increase sales. Some of his interviews are quite hilarious, especially when he’s drunk.

    Darkthrone are pretty punk rock, and this seems like a pretty typical punk rock kind of interview to me. I mean, have you listened to the last 4 Darkthrone releases. They don’t give a fuck. This helps alot when you are battling the international black metal community where all those jokes about being “trOO” comes from. It’s not all a joke to some people, and Fenriz I bet comes across a bunch of assholes all the time criticizing him and his music.

    But yah, if you are expecting Darkthrone to ascribe any system of proper values, that’s not going to happen and I wouldnt want it any other way.

    fuck Darkthrone. Probably one of the most overrated ‘metal’ bands ever. They are a shit garage punk band that appropriated the Norwegian black metal look and rolled with it.
    Compared to Mayhem and Immortal they are like a rotting sack of dog entrails sitting next to a filet mignon.

    Rock interviews are stupid and Fenriz is taking the piss. Darkthrone has been taking the piss for years. It is part of what makes them great. The more they can goad people into being very serious and grave about how Darkthrone isn’t as good as Mayhem isn’t as good as Immortal isn’t as good as Abruptum isn’t as kvlt as the Old Funeral rehearsal tape, the more people with brains like Darkthrone. Seriously, we’re supposed to be OUTRAGED!!1! because the dude from Darkthrone didn’t come with the “we luv our fans, they R #1″? Fuck that shit, read Tiger Beat for that.

    cbmc: so does their ‘taking the piss’ involve utterly sucking and being a completely unlistenable joke? If so, then they succeeded with flying colors.
    I don’t give a shit if he disses fans in an interview, I personally wouldn’t do it, but it’s his choice. My problem with them is they utterly suck, are questionably metal at best and are a creation of the underground metal media in the early ’90′s who were looking to crown the most obscure ‘evil’ sounding Nowegian black metal band they could find ( time period I lived through that I try to block from my psyche as often as possible). Darkthrone was their choice.
    The test of time has been utterly brutal to their legacy, such as it is, and Fenriz has to rely on being an assclown for anyone to find him or his shit band even remotely relevant.
    I’ll leave you and the other fanboi’s to masturbate into your Transylvanian Hunger t-shirts that are 5 sizes too small whilst listening to the ‘classic’ Blaze in the Northern Sky now ;)

    I’ve never listened to Darkthrone ever. I’m sure they’re a run of the mill typical generic black/death/exteme/whatever metal band that people worship to be “cutting edge”.

    Anyway, I like his stance on the biz and fans. I think “fans” are going to realize their value has been diminished just as music’s value has. Music “fans” seem to think that they own the musicians. I think you’re going to find a big “fuck you” backlash from artists directed towards “fans” who mooch off artists.

    Someone who sites URIAH HEEP, MOTORHEAD, early BYRDS, HIGH TIDE, KLAUS SCHULTZE, PUKE, DISCHARGE, AMEBIX, SLAUGHTER (Canada) among his faves, has a musical vision larger than the modern stupid metal horizon. I followed him from his first “semi-rehersal” demo in the mid 80ies (those were the days) and all I have to say is F.O.A.D. with heavy metal as it is. It’s only rock ‘n’ roll and we like it nasty and loud!
