ARE METALLICA EVEN BIGGER DOUCHE BAGS THAN WE SUSPECTED?

So as you’re no doubt aware, earlier this week Metallica previewed some rough mixes of six of the ten tracks that will appear on their new album in London. Most of the reviews were so outrageously covered in jizz that they were hard to take seriously as anything other than products of the same Metallica hype machine that gave St. Anger good buzz right before its release.

However, one publication, The Quietus, actually ran a review that seemed even handed and, well, reasonable. Excerpts are as follows:

“Right from the off, it’s a relief to hear that the utterly awful production of St. Anger is no more… The first song… is Metallica’s best song in ages, perhaps since the 1980s…

“The next song has a working title of ‘Flamingo’ and is going to be the first single. Now, Metallica’s lead singles have been breathtakingly crap since 1995, so it was a relief to hear that ‘Flamingo’ (as it almost definitely will not be called) is a modernised take on their amazing 1988 song ‘One’…

“However, let us not forget that this is modern Metallica — and the next two songs are much less fun… Apart from dexterous soloing from Hammett, [the songs are] not great…

“…track five is tedious, a combination of the aimless riffery of St. Anger and the pointless rock chorusing of Load…

“…the final song.. is great, a genuine slice of thrash metal that starts fast and stays that way… in 2008, Hetfield and Ulrich delivering any form of thrash metal is not to be sneered at…

“This album could be good, or it could be mediocre — too much depends on the other four songs to make a call at this point.”

Okay. All of that actually seems pretty fair, doesn’t it?

Unfortunately, it’s too fair for Metallica, who, it seems, have shut the review down – or so alleges this article:

“It came as something of a surprise then to find that the internet had been expunged of any coverage of the

event. We emailed The Quietus editor Luke Turner about what happened. He gave this response:

The story behind the removal of the article runs as follows: Metallica held an album listening party for selected music journalists in London this Wednesday past. One of the writers was kind enough to write a piece about the album which, if you were lucky enough to read it before it was taken down, was full of praise about a return to form. At no point was the writer ask[ed] to sign a non-disclosure agreement. The Quietus and other websites ran pieces on the album, but were quickly contacted by Metallica’s management via a third party and told to remove the articles. The Quietus kept our article up the longest and, as no non-disclosure agreement had been signed, [was] not prepared to remove it merely due to the demands of Metallica’s management. We only eventually removed the article earlier today to protect the professional interests of the writer concerned (the piece was written anonymously). Seems Metallica’s fear of the internet shows no sign of abating.”

Okay. If this is true, Metallica just made the shift from irritating poopy faces who have wiped their collective ass with theor own legacy to full on, Axl Rose-style crazy fucking fucks. This makes me so angry I don’t even know where to begin: they didn’t have anyone sign non-disclosure agreements, so they basically used their fame and money to put political pressure on the write. Yes, it seems that the ultimate metal band have finally settled into being the kinds of bullies they’ve (allegedly) always stood against. It’s an idiotic move, to boot, because if the album blows goats, word will get out sooner or later – in fact, since the album will inevitably leak before its release, it’s not even like they can trick people into buying it the first day before before the negative hype settles in.

Shameful. Fucking shameful.

From reading it, it sounds like the directive came more from Q-Prime than from the band. However, it’s really no secret that Lars takes a very… um, active role in the business side of the band, so who knows. If I had to guess though, I would say that at least half if not 3/4 of the band had no idea about any of this at all (until today, maybe).

First off the “review” was written anonymously, so who’s the douche? I know it’s popular to shit all over Metallica for being egomanical fuckheads, but really, this is a stretch.

There is plenty to bitch about re: Metallica. But choose the right battles.

  • The Sensible One

Yeah, but if the guy HAD put his name on the review, chances are any other listening parties would have been off-limits to him..

Unless you’re sucking their dicks, labels have a way of “forgetting” to put your name on the list, ESPECIALLY if your last review was more harsh than they wanted it to be..

Oh, and Lars Ullrich is a shitty person.

  • http://www.buckangel.com Kue Boss

On the contrary, I find Metallica to be pretty just in revoking all reviews written about the preview.

Afterall, a huge part of the St. Anger bitching had to do with the letdown of the record after so much incredible hype had surrounded it. Maybe they don’t want the same feeling for this effort?

    Just an idea.

    pfff fuck metallica!!!

  • http://www.myspace.com/divinationmetal thedoomsdaybroadcast

why is the guy a douche for writing an honest review? it’s actually refreshing that someone wasn’t giving written rim-jobs just because it’s metallica. afterall, he didn’t say it was ALL bad.

but i have to agree, as big of peckerheads as they are, it was probably more the management that pulled the reviews, and not to “avoid hype”… just because they want no bad press so that people will buy it simply because it’s metallica and some feel they can do no wrong.

  • miguel_g(Peru)

I agree with what has been said about the management being behind this, not the band itself….I mean who doesn’t likes to get compliments? It’s sad that even Metallica’s management doesn’t even believe in the band today. They’re afraid of getting another St.Anger, and they want to squeeze their “chicken of the golden eggs” before they leave.

You know, like most people, I love pre-Load Metallica but even if this album is better than the sound of angels fucking, I wouldn’t buy it on principle. And that principle if Lars Urlich. I wouldn’t line the pocket of that malevolent dwarf with an extra cent.

  • http://last.fm/user/cooperaa Aaron

Who fucking cares? Reviews are useless these days when you can easily download the album for free and make up your own mind.

  • Dude Manbro

Is there any other band (except GnR of course) that carries on as much regarding the “making of” their albums? I mean seriously, they’re in the studio recording maybe 11 or 12 “metal” tunes & you’d think they were in there planning a space mission or something. If these “rough mixes” are really that good, finish them, release the album & silence the doubters (like me) who believe Metallica is as washed-up as a bloated corpse on a riverbank. Sad & depressing how these clowns have become the real-life Spinal Tap. Prove me wrong, boys, prove me wrong….

  • Revrant

You know, I don’t recall Disturbed making a bitchfit fuss when a few people posted their thoughts on the listening parties they help PUBLICLY, but moving on.

This is cocksuckery, and Lars is most definitely behind it, he’s the biggest douchebag in the band, I wouldn’t be surprised if this album is only somewhat better than St. Anger, which isn’t very hard.

metallica sucks so i dont care about this review. metallica can go die they sold out!!!

who cares just download the album for free and if you don’t like it then talk about it. Stop counting your chickens before they hatch.

    Pathetic. Just pathetic.

  • DemonicLemming

    Bloody fucking wankers.

“Oh Metallica sold out, oh boo hoo, I’m going to go back to listening to my generic myspace shit metal now! That’s hardcore!”

Metallica didn’t sell out, they changed some of the aspects of their music – as any fucking band has to in order to keep selling records because after about 3 albums of the same shit, interest falls off. If Metallica sold out, then so did Lamb of God and Fear Factory, based on the huge difference between their initial albums and the latest (or last) album they put out. If you don’t like it, blow a goddamn goat.

As far as the review bullshit, that’s probably management and Ulrich. No one fucking likes Ulrich and he’s worthless as a drummer in his old age, and he’s bitter about it. Fucking useless. I seriously doubt Hammett or Hetfield had any say whatsoever in any of this, and who gives a flying shit about Trujillo – he shouldn’t even be in the goddamn band.

A clusterfuck regarding Metallica as usual, but people blindly blaming the entire band when likely, as has been said, three-quarters of them probably had no idea what was happening is asinine. I’m sure if fucking Disturbed pulled this bullshit (rhetorically now, assholes), there would be legions of nutswingers trying to defend them, but making fun of Metallica has become so trendy that no one stops to think about the shit they’re saying before they say it.

    Really?

You mean like Megadeth, Slayer, and Testament have all changed “with the times” ? Those 3 bands are all still playing the exact same music they were 20+ years ago, and are still successful at it.

    Metallica died September 27th, 1986.

They are a joke now, and this kind of thing just adds gas to that fire… pathetic.
