METALLICA COVERING IRON MAIDEN; HEY, ANYTHING’S BETTER THAN ST. ANGER

Wednesday, July 16th, 2008 at 2:13pm by

From the much bally-hooed Maiden Heaven Kerrang Iron Maiden tribute CD, Metallica covering “Remember Tomorrow.” Not that this is super-great, but anything’s better than St. Tinitus. Maybe they should just scrap Death Magnetic and stick to doing covers; at least that way they won’t risk facing the ire of the Metallica-bashing Internet wrath. Actually, nevermind… I’m pretty sure you all will be happy to dole out hate on this piece anyway.

This was on Metallica’s myspace last week… How are you guys just now hearing about this?

  • Kye

Well, Metallica still sounds good…I mean, they can’t pull off Iron Maiden like Iron Maiden obviously, but if Death Magnetic sounds anything like this, it’ll be good

Coheed’s cover of The Trooper is so far the only thing I’ve heard off this cd that I care about…Trivium’s cover excites me for the simple fact that I want to know what Matt sounds like now.

  • vance almighty

if anything, this just makes the wait for death magnetic that much more agonizing for me.

this cover is awesome… metallica sound better and more cohesive then they have in years.

  • Ben

Not bad…I wish they picked a different song though. Prowler would have been great. The production is a little sterile.

  • Erin Carter

If you want to know what Heafy and Trivium sound like on it, hit this video, its a preview of a bunch of the tracks, starts off woth the metallica and trivium is towards the end…Machinehead song sounds pretty good.

Ehhh. Not bad. But Opeth’s cover of this song is far superior.

  • bucketochicken

Yes, I would definitely file that under:

    Ass, Bad

  • bucketochicken

@ TJ: Seems reasonable – they are, after all, far superior musicians.

Since the Black allbum, I have been one of Metallica’s biggest detractors, but from what I have heard from the new album, it seems that Mr. Rubin has gotten Metallica to do the unthinkable. It may just be that Metallica will reclaim their metal throne with an album that pays homage to …And Justice, while moving forward, and actually being relevant to today’s diversified metal scene. Oh, and the Maiden cover ain’t half bad either.

  • Cam

good cover. can’t say the same for avril lavigne’s cover of fuel.

    @ erin:

coheed did the best job and they’re the least metal

  • Dude Manbro

They covered “Prowler” w/ I saw them on the “Justice” tour, it was pretty ass-kicking too. But they were still good back then, so ass-kickingness was to be expected.

  • Sammy

Thank goddess James didn’t over-emote, vocally, as he has done for ten years. Pretty faithful, yet Metallica-ized.

  • metal_As_Fuck

the trooper cover is a joke hahah they messed it up big time emos can’t cover metal bands

  • M. Meyer

Where can I get Kerrang! in the United States now that Tower Records is gone? I can’t find it anywhere these days.

  • Brine

I can NEVER let an opportunity like this go. I like St. Anger. Listened to it (in it’s entirety) yesterday. Now, I know what a statement like that usually causes….but I don’t give a fuck. It’s a cool album. Just because it’s not a complete REHASH of Master Of Puppets….people hate it. Can’t take change.

The fuckin’ snare sounds like shit. That’s a given. But it’s a kick-ass, aggressive record. With no solos. Which I can get forgive.

So….to those that are gonna tell me how fuckin’ stupid I am, fuck off.

    Let the games begin…..

Kinda limp cover, to be honest. None of the fire of the original, which has a certain youthful sense of urgency. Yet none of the somber maturity that is also in the song, which Opeth pulled out with their cover. I mean, the first creshendo isn’t very forceful. This is Metallica, the band that used to be very proficient at those sorts of creshendos…Sanitarium, Fade to Black, One, etc. Oh well.

  • James

i agree with tj, opeth’s version should totally be on this cd. kirk’s added shit is worthless in this song and James’ voice is really annoying. the opeth version is so evil and definately in direction a cover should go. respect the original and then put your style to it. not just play some dumb solo over a different distortion version of the same thing.

  • Joe A.

The best cover Metallica ever did is by far this one:

  • bucketochicken

    Don’t be so salty, Brine.

    Oh, wait…

  • Worg

The rest of the album is going to be their usual upbeat frat thrash.

They are SUCH A GOOD BAND, as in such amazing musicians, and they put out such utter shit.

But this is the best thing they’ve released for 20 years. I suppose there’s a glimmer of hope that the rest of it won’t suck shitty dog dick. But I’m not holding my breath.
