CHRIS CORNELL AND TIMBALAND ACHIEVE NEW LEVELS OF SUCK PREVIOUSLY THOUGHT UNREACHABLE WITH NEW SINGLE

Tuesday, July 22nd, 2008 at 3:17pm by Vince Neilstein

Timbaland and Chris CornellSo back in March we reported the rumors that Chris Cornell was recording his next solo album with famous hip-hop producer Timbaland (Justin Timberlake, Snoop Dogg, Nelly Furtado, etc) and wondered aloud about said project.

Lucky for you (or not, as it were), an anonymous source has sent us a radio rip of the first single “Long Gone.”

Please excuse me while I log into my ebay account to sell all of my Soundgarden CDs.

The last couple of Audioslave records, his crap solo stuff, and a tour with Linkin Park is bad enough…this is just…..PAINFUL.

  2. Are the soundgarden cd’s going to be “Buy It Now” for $.01? Cause honestly they aren’t going to be worth much more after this drops.

  3. Alec29 says:

That was absolutely fucking awful!!! Gonna go throw up now!!!

  4. jcantrell says:

Sounds like ever other timbaland produced song of 2007 -2008. I think he is going to hit a HUGE pay day with this record every Nickleback and Blow Jobi fan is gonna be all about it and we know what that demagraphic is that still buys records!!!

    …YOUR MOM!

  5. phatman says:

    wtf????this is stupid…what a jesus christ poseur

  6. TedTedPoleyPoley says:

the video for this hot single better have some major choreography work (the K-Fed kind, not the sweet Disturbed guitar solo poses kind, just to be clear), or i’m gonna be really really PISSED just like Zakk Wylde was at Dave Grohl’s songs! and i think Nick Cannon should sing the chorus too, that’d be neat.

  7. d.o.g.o.b.g.y.n. says:

It probably still won’t suck as much as Audioslave.

  8. e1esk says:

    terrible.

  9. Sammy says:

I was on record (via comments on this very site) as saying one shouldn’t pre-judge an album by its producer’s previous genre.

I am now going on record as saying any of you are free to come up to Spokane to kick my ass. I’ll even throw the first punch at myself.

  10. Cisco says:

Well, I assumed this was the direction he was heading sooner or later, why? Don’t ask me. Audioslave was pretty thumpin’ I thought, though they never measured any on the br00tal scale.

    @Sammy,
Spokane really? That explains a lot!

  11. ZapBranigan says:

Wow, that’s fucking terrible. I’m sorry this even piqued my interest in March when I first heard about this unholy union.

  12. tezza says:

I, for one, like the new song & the direction Cornell is going in. I’m sure he was bashed when he left Soundgarden & did Euphoria Morning. As he was when he left Audioslave to go solo…..again. But, regardless, the man has talent. He likes versatility; to do what he wants. Hats off to him. I can’t wait for the PR concert to hit my town. Pit tickets to see him upclose & personal!

  13. Nick says:

    wow, Cornell looks HORRIBLE!

  14. Steph says:

Just because an artist takes a different direction musically is no reason to chuck everything they’ve ever done. Chris’ voice has never sounded better. He has earned the right to do whatever he wants. People just wanna bash him for the sake of bashing, like Tezza says. He still has it, and anyone going to the PR shows will get to see that for themselves.

  15. Jim Gilletowicz says:

dude, don’t fucking link to shit like that…i just threw up in my mouth a little…

  16. Brett says:

Let Chris be… He’s long gone.

  17. Matt says:

Wow, with shit like this being amde Chris is going to make a guest spot on the next American Idol. Way to go fucker, you make Ozzy look like a better decision maker.

  18. noyokono says:

Matt: considering that last season’s Idol winner covered Cornell’s cover of “Billie Jean” on the program, a guest spot doesn’t seem too far fetched to begin with…

  19. e1esk says:

    To Steph:

I’m not bashing this song for the sake of bashing Cornell, frankly I haven’t taken interest in his career since soundgarden broke up and even then I wasn’t the biggest fan of it. I’m basing my opinion on the fact that it sounds like any generic pop-rock that floods the airwaves for a few months then disappears like socks in a dryer.

  20. John says:

    dibs on the Soundgarden CDs…

  21. ronftl says:

Kind of hard to know what to say on a site like this – seems everyone’s mind is pretty much made up, pre-CD release…you have to admit, first, this isn’t the best clip (aside from the distraction of all the voice-overs) – it’s pretty rough sounding to me (NOT great quality), and I’ve seen MUCH better snips on YouTube of Chris performing it (and other new clips) live on the current Proj Rev tour. Having seen Chris play live twice late last year (ummm…SOUNDGARDEN filled 3 hour sets), he REALLY has never sounded better (and his band was extremely tight & did an unbelievable job). Chris Cornell’s voice is always what made his music work – put it way over the bar, and since that’s more than held up over the years, yep, I’m buying whatever the guy is selling. Your loss.

  22. dvmetallica says:

Omfg this track is shit. Wats with chris? he’s a rocker, not a pussy pop-princess. Yes he’s got an awesome voice, but this song is just a complete fuck up. RIP Soundgarden

  23. All this shows is where the songwriting talent layed in Soundgarden: KIM FUCKING THAYIL. Plus, Kim’s had the most respectable post-Soundgarden career of the bunch. That man rules.

  24. [...] we all seem to be in agreement that the new Chris Cornell / Timbaland joint is a steaming pile of dog turds, let’s harken back to better times, shall we? Are you a fan of the early, raw Soundgarden [...]

  25. noyokono says:

It is my firm belief that Chris Cornell is following the career trajectory of Robert Plant, one of his most obvious influences. We’re maybe a decade or so away from a bluegrass effort.

  26. ronftl says:

ummm…pick-axe Bobby – where do you get your info (or do you ever read liner notes??); almost, if not ALL the writing for SG was basically done by Cornell (a VERY few credited to the Cornell/Thayil duo) prior to their last studio LP, Down On The Upside – Cornell was/is a genius…and as far as noyokono’s comment about Robert Plant, I’m kind of confused: Plant is one of the few from the late ’60s /’70s who has actually done a really decent job (have you heard any of his late LPs, or seen any of his acoustic sets…he still has pipes) and hasn’t thoroughly embarassed himself ala Mick Jagger-style.

  27. ronftl says:

Don’t get me wrong – I’ve been looking out for Thayil ever since the demise of SG (one of favorite guitarists ever), but he was mainly responsible for SG’s drop-down tuning, which sounded cool, but wasn’t genius…but I AM headed over to the “Thayil” thread; I already knew all about Probot and his NWTO work w/Biafra (sucked – but that’s because of Biafra), but I’d like to see what else is going on…

  28. noyokono says:

@rontfl: I was referring to Plant’s full on embrace of pop music in the 80s. Think of the Timbaland produced album as Cornell’s Shaken N Stirred.

  29. pimpdaddy says:

i like it cornell’s voice will never be matched by anyone ever

  30. Liz says:

I like this song. I heard it live last week and it really sounded great. Yeah, its not something I really expected to hear from him, but I love the fact that he’s always moving in unexpected directions.

  31. Dr J says:

I listen to that with an open mind and can honestly say that it was way worse then i expected. even for that genre its not good.

  32. ronftl says:

@noyokono: okay, I try not to remember of the ’80s; yeah, I remember something about a “Page/Plant tour” (then a “Page/Coverdale tour??”) that got about zero attention, too…BUT, as of late, Robert Plant (and Jimmy Page) has redeemed himself (gotta say it – redemption song – sorry, that sucks) by acting his age, which isn’t to say that he still can’t or shouldn’t belt out old Zepp tunes; he just isn’t acting like a caricature of himself – like Jagger et al.

  33. Andrew H. says:

I still think it’s too early, and much of this negativity will subside when we can hear the whole album, and hear more of these tracks live. Sure, this single seems heavily influenced by Timbaland, and for fans of Chris Cornell, it’s a huge leap in a new direction. For a single, it’s an obvious choice to advertise this collaboration, because it’s obviously Chris and Timbaland. Radio singles aren’t always representative of the album, nor are they usually the best tracks. I imagine there’s plenty to like on this album, even if your tastes lean heavily towards soundgarden. With only one new song (can’t speak for the ‘clips’ running around, they’re too short…), I can’t be convinced that this album will disappoint me.

  34. I stand very much corrected, ronftl.
And agree with you about the NWTO shit.

  35. Sammy says:

No argument here that Cornell can still sing (at least in a studio), but my issue with the song is that it’s a WAY overproduced, terrbible pop song. (In most cases, I’d say “terrible pop song” is a redundant phrase, but about one in 45,000 pop songs isn’t terrible, but merely awful. And then we get into the whole issue of defining what “pop” music is. “Pop” being the condensed version of “poplular” nothwithstanding, some metal is pop, while most jazz is not.)

Going in a new direction is nothing new and there is nothing inherently wrong with it. People like new challenges, and often musicians want to explore new creative and expressive avenues. Just like the comic actor who tries his hand at drama or vice versa, musicians sometimes feel tethered to their past. But in this particular case (as in, this one song), I find it to be a terrible representation of Cornell’s usual brilliance and (in my opinion) considerable legacy in rock music’s history.

~~And the award for Most Pretentious Sounding Comment of the Day goes to Sammy!~~

  36. Don says:

I like the new music. I don’t see why people are hating on it. Its a good song to relax to. Im not gonna pretend to dislike it just so people will think Im cool. nope.

  37. ol says:

But you’re staring at me OK??

Like you need to be PAID!
    PAID!!

This shit is awful….. god damn,, TImbaland?? WTF?
I hope this tanks, so he can get back to making decent music.

Chris has just lost a fan…..This is his “St Anger” only much, much worse ( I didn’t think that was possible)

  38. timmy says:

This is horrible, but understandable. His last solo album which came out last year was horrible too. His firs solo album way the hell back in 1999 was actually decent. These last 2 are just wrong.

How can this come from the man that gave us songs like Beyond The Wheel, Hands All Over, Outshined, Jesus Christ Pose, Black Hole Sun, Pretty Noose????

  39. andry says:

    FHUXyt comment3 ,

  40. ron says:

Take back everything I ever said about “giving it a chance.” I did. Couldn’t suck worse Really.

  41. ray says:

i can’t believe this is the same guy who made sweet euphoria.

  42. ron says:

That’s what happens when you stop drinking, smoking & doing drugs, and get a wife who seems to pretty much have his ass whipped. About the drugs, though – I’m betting he’s either getting something on the sly, or his doctors are treating his depression/bipolar with some really great “happy meds.” NOBODY just quits booze, alcohol, and drugs (esp. after so many years of heavy use) all at once and goes on like everything is peachy-keen. There’s something else going on (would love to know what it is).

  43. no says:

Heard some of the songs on the new album… sounds like since he can’t think of any good songs he’ll just do a bunch of shitty songs that cater to moronic women in their 20s-30s who date guys that treat them like shit, but they don’t care because they’re screwing 9 other guys anyway all while neglecting their children so they can go out and party and be “cool”. And then they can go, “omg that song’s just like me and my life and stuff, i totallys connect with this it’s like he wrote it for me i love his voice and i can dance to that beat while i’m at the club looking for a new disease-ridden partner”. All Cornell has to do is show up at the studio, sing the lines on the paper Timbaland (what a super creative name that is by the way, just as super creative as the mindless droning of the “awesome beats” in his “songs” which he probably assembled in a computer program full of preset annoying noises since he hasn’t talent to play a real instrument) gives him and rake in the dough.

  44. stan-o says:

Cornell’s just too old to be doing this shit. And it IS shit.
