Devin Townsend may have ditched his skullet for the simple pleasures of domesticity and lounging back in the producer’s chair, but thankfully Karl Simon of The Gates of Slumber is single-handedly making sure that the next generation of metalheads revere the power of the skullet.
His front-of-the-head tuft is in a league of its own.

Honestly I can’t stand this look. It just looks like some old guy who’s trying to be metal.
Ok… and what if he’s an old guy, and he’s a metalhead? Isn’t that the “look” he should be going for? Or are we supposed to grow out of metal when we get old?
I just really, really prefer metal musicians to not give a shit about their “look.” You see some of these younger bands, particularly in the death/metal/whatevercore genres with guys who clearly spend way too much time in front of the mirror. If they’re making good music, I can forgive them their ridiculous image preoccupations, but seriously…. it’s very un-metal to care about how you look.
I just find the skullet oddly refreshing.

I agree with Fink here… what’s so ‘metal’ about spending more time in front of the mirror than your girlfriend? For that matter what’s ‘metal’ about having a ‘look’? That’s shit for people who worry about if a band has a member with short hair. Short, long, skullet, mullet, afro, bald… . It’s fucking dumb, and not really all that funny.
I hate to break it to you guys (and gals), but metal has a long and sorry history of worrying about a “look” as much as any genre ever has. The very fact that a metal band in the mid-’80s wouldn’t be caught dead without long hair is a testament to that fact. Metal should be about “who cares?!” but in reality, metal fans care about this nonsense, and always have, as much as boy band pop stars.

Judas Priest, Accept, Black Sabbath, Metal Church? Mid 80’s Metal… Sammy you’re wrong as can be. Yeah, there are a shit ton of bands out there that are about image, always have been, but there are also bands that don’t care about that shit at all, and they’ve always been there too… and real music fans don’t care about that shit at all.

Don’t forget about Dallas from Nile! What about Hulk Hogan and Ron Jeremy, both skullets. I hope that when I get old, I have enough hair for a skullet. The skullet is the most metal you can be, period.
Priest and Sabbath were from the ’70s originally when no one cared. But my point really is that metal fans are as worried about look and image as anyone. We tend to think we’re above all that, but look at all the acrimony on this website. There is so much hate here and so much conjecture about what is or isn’t metal, almost always based purely on one’s own opinion.

Sammy, I take your point that there are metalheads who are just as obsessed with fashion as anybody in pop or whatever, but we call those people posers. And anybody who would not like a band because the singer was bald or had short hair or was black or fat or something else fucking lame like that falls into the poser world, doesn’t it? It’s a big world and there are a million opinions about what is and isn’t metal, you’re right. But that doesn’t change the fact that once you start talking about haircuts you might as well start talking about shoes.
Damn….i don’t know what the band sound like or anything about them by i feel i must purchase their album just because his skullet is so awesome!!!!
I’ve seen Gates of Slumber before. They’re HEAVY AS FUCK and they RIP HARD.
Now, if there was a skullet band that should get som props, Nifelheim. 3/5 skullet action covered in spikes and leather is a total winning combination.
