DALLAS COYLE OFFICIALLY OUT OF GOD FORBID

Tuesday, March 31st, 2009 at 2:55pm by Axl Rosenberg

Here’s a statement from Doc Coyle:

“There have been a barrage of rumors and questions on whether or not Dallas has left God Forbid. It’s true that Dallas has left the band. It’s taken us a few days to confirm this definitely, and figure out what we were going to do considering the fact that we are starting a very important tour with Lamb of God this week.

I don’t want to go into the hairy details, but all I can say is that there was a mutual disagreement between Dallas and I, and the disagreement became angry on both sides, and he decided to sit out the tour the day we were supposed to leave. We later learned he did not want to tour anymore at all. Everyone in the band, including myself was upset and shocked. For me, it’s a lot tougher because he’s my brother and I have a very close bond with him. We’ve done everything together our whole lives, so it’s difficult to deal with emotionally but I understand he has bigger responsibilities at home to care for. I wish he would’ve handled it in a different way, but I am not angry at him for leaving if he is unhappy with our situation. I really hope he finds success and happiness in his future pursuits.

In the meantime, we’ve recruited ex-Darkest Hour shredder, Kris Norris, to fill in for the tour. We are currently doing a few warm up shows as a 4 piece to meet the LOG tour in Phoenix, AZ on April 2nd. Kris will be there for the start of the LOG tour though. I’ve been friends with Kris for years, and have an immense amount of respect for his playing. I look forward to playing with him, and I’m sure he will knock it out the park! Byron and I will pick up the slack with the vocals as much as we can. Thanks for everyone’s continued support, and we’ll see you on the road!”

Not much to say here. Doc’s statement is pretty straight-forward, and I don’t care to speculate any further. Everyone who reads this site knows that if Dallas has anything to add (and please note that I said “if”), he’s not shy and he’ll say what he wants to say on his own good time.

As long time God Forbid fans even before we knew Dallas, Doc, or anyone else associated with the band, we’d be lying if we said this news didn’t bum us out; it’s hard to imagine what the band will be like without his inimitable presence. But we’re glad that God Forbid is going to persevere. If Earthsblood is any indication, they have a lot of good years left in ‘em.

I guess I should have known they’d have a backup. Was kind of hoping they wouldn’t be able to play the first few shows and I could see a longer LoG set. I guess they can be my beer band for the evening.

  2. Nate says:

Wow— surprised to see him leave his own goddamn brother after they just released a very successful, well-recieved album…

HOPEFULLY THIS DOES NOT AFFECT THEIR PERFORMANCE ON THE LOG TOUR WHICH I AM SEEING 5-8!!

  3. CarlosRamirez says:

So wait, is Dallas joining Arsis or what?

  4. enyggma says:

This really blows. I just got into them! They seem like cool guys and I wish them the best. If his passion slay elsewhere than he has every right to pursue whatever those passions may be.

  5. Me says:

worst timing in the world. at least I have Earthsblood and can be happy, but this is gonna put a real damper on the live shows. not sure what it’ll mean for future music.

  6. pacomon says:

I’m just as disappointed that Dallas left, but its great that God Forbid is going to keep it real. They know they have fans out there that want to see them play! I’ve seen Kris Norris play and the man can hold his own! Great replacement! I can’t wait to see God Forbid this summer on the Rock Star Energy Tour!

  7. Phoenixdan says:

Wow. I was looking forward to seeing the band this Thursday on the start of the LoG tour. I’ve never seen them live and I hope they are able to put on a good show. If this is an April Fools joke, it’s a good one.

  8. Fanboy says:

So the fanboy cycle is complete. Love their music, acquaint yourself with a member of the band, gain their favor with free publicity and ass-kissing, inadvertently contribute to a wedge in the band with an unprofessional approach to a critical review of of this business associate’s art, give disagreeing band members (brothers) a high-traffic forum to voice their opposing positions, and finally, your boy quits the band.

Not that I will miss him/them that much anyway, but MetalSucks handled the God Forbid situation terribly. This is a good site, but here is one instance of bad decisions getting out of control.

  9. \m/Eluveitie\m/ says:

It’s impossible, and unlikely, to conclude that Metalsucks is responsible for this

  10. RobInjection says:

@Fanboy – Before I go ahead and call you a complete moron can you please explain to me how this website caused a wedge between the band?

  11. Matt says:

It does seems like a slightly douchey thing to do to leave your band high and dry right when they’re about to start touring on a much anticipated tour behind a successful and acclaimed album.

Wonder if this is gonna put a damper in their plans for Mayhem Festival as well

  12. billybob says:

@Fanboy – What the fuck do you know?

    @Dallas – rough timing brother

    @GF – Keep it real

    @MS – Fuck the haters

  13. Nickweiser says:

wat the fucking hell?!?!?!!? How the fuck does this due leave his brother hanging like this let alone the entire band which can be considered his other family. God Forbid just put out their strongest album to date and now this happens??? Im sure there is more than meets the eye with this story. We all know that Dallas is a man with an honest opinon like no other. There is always 2 sides of a story, maybe his will be more direct, indirect or god forbid who knows? This is bad news, not just for metal music, but music in general. Dallas, whatever it is that inspired you to leave, i hope it was the right choice. Im sorry if i seem like i was venting at you earlier in this thing, im just well shocked. Hopefully something can happen in the future and this can all be put behind us.

    Nickweiser

  14. fanboy says:

i didn’t say metalsucks is responsible for anything, nor did i say that the site “caused a wedge between the band.” and before you call me a moron, understand what i was saying: that MS contributed to the problem.

Not responsible for, but part of the problem.

  15. DemonicLemming says:

Hm. Interesting. Wonder if the new album was the crux point for everything, as Dallas seemed pretty happy with the band for a while, or if it was more tour-related than anything?

Three major bands now – Nightwish, Scar Symmetry, and now possibly God Forbid – losing members over touring disagreements.

  16. billybob says:

@fanboy – You’re contradicting yourself dude, if you’re not directly involved in the situation then you really have no idea what’s going on in his head. Let the man speak for himself, MetalSucks is just a forum for opinion.

  17. raiseyerfists says:

So this means he stops writing those rants, right? I can hope, can’t I?

  18. fanboy says:

@billybob – I realize I have no idea what’s going on here really. it’s just my opinion that giving dallas, a loudmouth, and doc, an even-keel type of guy who’s worried about alienating fans with polarizing columns a forum to very publicly voice their differences didn’t help anything.

and how am i contradicting myself? i was careful to say “contributed to,” and even “inadvertently.” if i phrased things confusingly before, apologies. metalsucks was part of the problem and some bad decisions of the head honchos here made things worse. in my opinion. i would like to continue having a calm, rational discussion about this, but i see this digressing fast. help me keep it sane and you’ve got a pal.

  19. Rolling Thunder says:

    Remember Reject the Sickness?

    That was awesome.

Cheapshot: Dallas Coyle has come “down with the sickness”

    Wakka wakka, eat your veggies!

  20. Nordic says:

    April fools!

  21. Vikingfromhell890 says:

Personally, I’m not suprised. Looking at some of his blogs leading up to Earthsblood shows that the band wasn’t making a lot of money and plus how the economy is AND how cd sells are, he maybe realized that it wasn’t worth it. However, Kris Norris is a sick player and will fit in well in GF.

  22. RobInjection says:

@fanboy WHAT BAD DECISIONS??? Can you elaborate on your claims as opposed to making blanket statements. How did MS inadvertently partially contribute to the demise of GF?

  23. Scott says:

Dallas Coyle leaves GF, but Mike Van Dyne has come back to Arsis…one upper, one downer for the day.

  24. metalguy says:

    @ robinjection
fanboy is terrible at explaining himself. he means that dallass column( or hooevers column it was) voiced a very different opinion than the bands. he believes this somehow lead to him leaving. i am not supporting his opinion in just clearing things up for you cuz your 1000 times cooler than he’ll ever be

  25. fanboy says:

good decision: having dallas contribute a column every so often

good decision: having a few updates on Earthsblood in anticipation of the release

questionable decision: running 19 posts (not including The Hard R) about Earthsblood between sept. 12 and mar. 3

bad decision: publishing the review of earthsblood after reader-expressed questioning of conflict of interest

questionable decision: having dallas spout about music criticism after his album doesn’t get 100% favorable reviews

bad decision: publishing doc directly dissenting to what dallas said in front of everyone instead of behind closed doors, as is customary

As I said it’s all only my opinion that this contributed to the fallout, and I’m sure that Rob is 1,000 times cooler than me. Chill the fuck out everybody. I thought metal attracted individualists, not the herd mentality that seems to have formed here. Speak intelligently with me and keep your insults to yourself.

  26. billybob says:

Dude, you’re digging yourself a hole, I think I can hear ppl heckling in Chinese right now..

Let’s just wait and see what Dallas has to say, I have a feeling he’ll pop up eventually.

  27. Mike says:

I think Doc saved some of the band’s credibility in my eyes with that post. It was good to see that not all of them are ignorant opinionated jackasses. I wish I knew how much of the good stuff of the band’s music that Dallas wrote, but if they can find a decent replacement, I can’t see it being anything but a positive. Yes these retarded rants got God Forbid exposure, but it was over-exposure, and people got tired of hearing about this band, so people were turned off by the band even before they heard the new songs, which are actually pretty good. This new album really goes beyond shitty metalcore for the most part and the band gained a lot of respect in my eyes.

  28. fanboy says:

@billybob – you’re probably right. you guys really don’t see how this could have played a part? maybe i’ll just take my ball(s) and go home.

  29. pokesmot says:

    lol @ fanboy
Dallas will be missed in GF
    Norris is nasty

  30. @fanboy
    @robinjection
    @ everyone else

Weekend at Bernies 2 is not nearly as good as the original

  31. RobInjection says:

First off, thanks for thinking I’m cool. That really wasn’t about this I just wanted to understand why you blamed MS for any of this because we usually get blamed for things that are in no way our fault and it is terribly irritating.

To respond to your elaboration, nobody forced Doc or Dallas to write anything. They submitted all of that stuff to MetalSucks. So to blame MS is pointless. If anything, I think you’re reading too much into it. Don’t you think the band has bigger issues than a blog?

Anyhoo, now that you have explained yourself, I will digress.

  32. billybob says:

    @fanboy

You may be onto something who knows? Dallas will clear the air. But there’s no need to point fingaz is all :)

  33. fanboy says:

Ah, the source of my miscommunication: I didn’t mean to BLAME MS for this, the site was just a conduit (an otherwise absent conduit) for dirty laundry to make its way into the public, that’s all. If it were me, I would have thought twice about publishing both the Doc and Dallas rant. The breakup is nobody’s fault but the guys in the band.

I also would have scaled back the site’s promotion of Earthsblood, but that’s a whole other can of worms.

  34. Rolling Thunder says:

“down with the sickness”, ladies and gentlemen..”the sickness”…helleww, this thing on?

    SOOOOooooOOOOooo, How ’bout that madoff?

  35. Gary S. says:

    SOMEBODY THROW A PIE!

  36. metalguy says:

not to say me and the rest of the readers are dumb or anything, but you use way too many big words and runon sentences

  37. DemonicLemming says:

@ fanboy – I partially agree with you, but with less criticism directed at this site specifically. (I think a lot of people failed to interpret what Dallas said as what he thought, and took what was said as the more official stance of the band itself, which was the base of the problem. I can see why, because there was a lot of the “zomg band!” stuff thrown in a lot of those posts, which could lead people to become confused as to what was personal opinion, and what was the band’s collective stance. I doubt the rest of the guys really agreed with Dallas’ use of “nigger” (although honestly, more people thinking of the word that way would really castrate it as a slur) and his rather hard-line left-wing view on politics (nothing can make people hate a band more than political views, regardless of the actual musical ability of the band), but since Dallas was the one with the official blog and everyone else was basically relegated to “being in the band,” there likely wasn’t an easy way for those guys to skillfully refute what Dallas said.

Some of the stuff this site did in particular – the never-ending nutswinging of the band, the barrage of posts constantly talking about the band, when previous “omg you have to listen to this NOW” bands (like LOTM, they basically disappeared after a week of discussion) probably tired a lot of readers out, but you can’t take the viewers of a single metal blog as an accurate, or even a relatively important, slice of the actual demographic that listens to the band. One individual site giving the band excessive coverage didn’t lead to the issues with the band, and while I think Dallas’ blog was probably a leading factor in what happened (even though I liked reading most of the stuff, except the political commentary), that could have been posted on any metal blog site.

General comment – yeah, it’s a blow to the band, but Nightwish recovered rather well from the loss of Tarja (and I know people will content Annette doesn’t have the vocal range of Tarja, and launch other negative comments about the band, which in any case never seemed well-received around here, and those people can go fist fuck themselves), and Tarja herself has started a (seemingly decently successful) solo project herself. Shit happens, things change, and there’s no reason for brewing over it – that just leads to issues in the future.

  38. fanboy says:

    @Demoniclemming – Good points all.

  39. Anthony says:

    Early April Fools?

    I’ll wait until Thursday.

  40. Wal-Mart Terrorist says:

as long as GF continues on, that’s all the matters. Drama will work itself out and Dallas will be back

@ fanboy – see, you try to make a point and you get demolished by everyone on here, tough break buddy.

    @ Demonic – Nightwish sucks :) let’s just hope GF doesn’t pull a G’nR

@ Rob Injection – i knight thee “Defender of the Metal Sucks Realem”, non-believers will die by your firery blade, sir.

@ Tinklepants – agree, WaB2 blows dolphin dick

  41. bondedbybud says:

Praise the day! Today should be a holiday or something, and maybe they will bomb so bad on tour that LOG will just give em the boot oh how humorous that would be! For once I can say being pussy whipped has amounted to something spectacular. I can barely fathom this myself, no more stupid Hard R posts were he calls white politicians niggers, wow and one would have to think there won’t be 99 useless posts about GF every week about what brand of pants Dallas is wearing or how many Dr. Peppers he drank the day before. You would have to think that his “colorful” posts here drove somewhat of a wedge between them, like that post his bro made about how he and the other guys in the band frowned upon what big Dallas had posted here. This is a time of rejoice! One more arrogant under talented metalcore noob down, and one less useless blog to scroll past as fast as u can.

  42. Ron McGovney says:

    April fool’s FTW

  43. Cavorka says:

I said it before and I will say it again: Don’t listen to bondedbybud, I’m pretty sure he is some angry 14 year old who thinks he’s cool because he downloaded ‘War Is My Shepherd’ once…

  44. Sammy says:

What next? Mark Few leaving Gonzaga?

  45. iolanach says:

April’s fool?!? I fucking hope not.

  46. Ben says:

I’d also like to point out, in the name of showing how biased MS really is, that if this was any other band, there would be snarky comments galore within Axl’s blog instead of this being treated like we just found out nuclear missiles were heading our way.

  47. Treefiddy says:

Yeah, i was going to say.. being Aprils fool pretty close.. and GF do tend to like to be good jokers ??

  48. vmanv says:

It’s March 31st, thus negating any comedic timing of an April Fools’ joke, ya see?

  49. Pig Vocals says:

Yeah, Weekend at Bernies II was freakin’ lame. I mean, for cripe’s sake, how the fuck does anyone expect a witchdoctor to raise someone from the dead? Come on, buddy. The original WAB was SOO much better than that other piece of garbage.

  50. Van Arseface says:

    Belgium bummer.

MS is allowed to be biased. It’s a blog.

  51. Owen says:

Coulda saw that coming, Dallas is a bit of a whiner.

Kris Norris fucking rocks but its a shame he’s filling in whilst Dallas has a stroppy fit.

No doubt he’ll re-evaluate his position and come crawling back anyhow.

  52. Keith Brown says:

God Dammit. I’m seeing them in San Jose on Saturday. GF is the main reason I want to go to that show in the first place. Dallas is a monster fucking player, this just makes me really fucking sad that I won’t be able to meet him.

  53. myke says:

you i really love this band. to me it seemed like the working mans’ band. it seemed like dallas worked his off to this band off the ground. i’m lil pist on how he was bitching no one would dig earthsblood. i think hes singing is great on the album. but to me it looks like he just gave up and didnt care. now i like kris norris alot. great guitarist. but 1 thing that will make god forbid suffer is dallas back up singing and the song writing. but i will still cheer them on!

  54. ryan says:

Norris is a better guitar player anyway!

  55. Elpants says:

    This is excellent news.

However, Kris Norris is better than this.

  56. SKLives says:

    McGovney!!!

  57. Jacob says:

    Thank you, Van Arseface.
If you douchebags want un-biased news, go to the newspapers. Oh wait, that’s biased. Try a radio station – nope, also biased. HOLY FUCK EVERYTHING’S BIASED. Dumbasses.

  58. Ben says:

Not prp, they just post news stories, no editorializing :P

  59. MetalMatt says:

Yeah it sucks that Dallas quit and all, but it’s just a fucking band. It’s not going to change the cds you already have. It won’t change Earthsblood. I live in the sticks (in Canada no less) so I’ll never see them live anyway.
The world is not ending. The band isn’t defunct. Dallas didn’t get shot in the face.
As for all this crap about MS contributing to the problem. Whatever. They are adults, not high schoolers. They should be bigger than that.
    Satan on a spoon!!
Have your little tear-fest and go listen to Buried Inside already.

  60. fiend13 says:

    APRIL FOOLS!!!

  61. fetusmasher says:

DALLAS IS AN OVER OPINIONATED FUCKWIT. NO ONE GIVES A FUCK WHAT HE HAS TO SAY. DOC SUCK MY COCK. BAND IS GAY

    VANFLIP.

  62. Alec29 says:

Sorry to hear of the split. Dallas will be missed by his fans, one of which I am. Touring can grind a person down and I can understand him wanting to be closer to home with the new baby.

  63. niggaplease says:

    Band is crap. Not important.

  64. Reaper-X says:

    Hmm…wait, what?

  65. iceface says:

Great news!!!!!!! now i get to see kris norris on the tour

  66. TMR says:

    WAIT WAIT WAIT !

    Is this legit ?

Not just a “sucky” april fools joke ? (pun was totally intended OH YEA !!!) am not sober. (goes back in the gutter)

  67. Death Reaper says:

  68. rob-209 says:

which one is dallas? is he the indian from creepshow 2? or was he the 2 dollar vin diesel?

    • creepy says:

OH SNAP! +1 for calling it what it is! nobody woulda cared about this band if they weren’t darker than average.

  69. pastel oblit says:

Best of luck with the future Dallas, your a legend keep strong and look after yourself
from a British God Forbid/ Coyle bro’s fan

  70. nick says:

    DALLAS! what the hell man?
Good luck with your kid and congrats. I’ve been following GF for years, usually referring to you guys as my favorite band. You connect with your fans like no other. Good luck brother. I hope to see you around soon.
