FREE NEW DREAM THEATER MP3 — TODAY ONLY!

Wednesday, May 6th, 2009 at 5:33pm by Vince Neilstein

dream theater - a rite of passageThe good folks at Roadrunner Records are giving away a free track from Dream Theater’s new album Black Clouds and Silver Linings, which doesn’t come out until June 23rd. The new track, “A Rite of Passage,” is available for one day only, which means you’ve got until midnight tonight (EDT, presumably) to grab it. So go and download it for free right now!

One-listen verdict: It sounds like Dream Theater. As a completely out-of-the-closet Dream Theater fanboy, I have to say I think the production sounds a bit weak. But I like James LaBrie’s vocals (he gets better with age, like a fine, fine Canadian wine) and the rest of the band sounds top-notch as always. John Myung’s bass is curiously high in the mix (and this is a good thing). There’s some stellar Petrucci shred starting around 5:20, followed by — what else — a ripping Jordan Rudess keyboard solo. The song is over 8 minutes long and it’s got plenty of twists and turns. So, ya know… it sounds like Dream Theater. Big shocker.

In summary: new Dream Theater! Yay!

    Listening now, pretty awesome !

  2. bucketochicken says:

Oh yeah… Dream Theater. Aren’t they opening for Zappa Plays Zappa this summer?

Also, I’m leaving for Opeth/Enslaved in about 15 minutes.
    Just sayin…

  3. Adam says:

that show came through pittsburgh yesterday but i didnt feel like paying over 25 bucks to see two bands. Dont get me wrong Opeth and Enslaved are fantastic bands and i enjoy them very much but they arent worth 25 bucks. I got to see Dragonforce and Cynic for only 20 and dragonforce has probably sold more records then both opeth and enslaved combined. Just saying.

    • syclonus says:

personally, i think opeth and enslaved for $25 bucks is a better deal than dragonforce and cynic for $20. dragonforce and cynic seemed like a really mismatched show to me, definitely wouldn’t have enjoyed it as much as the opeth/enslaved combo.

    • Johnny says:

you actually paid money to see stuido/sloppyforce hahahaha, sucks.

    • major says:

      end yourself

      • Blackthorned says:

Aside from the troll-esque Dragonforce comment, $25 for those two bands and you think it’s expensive? An Opeth headline gig would cost about £17 here in the UK so I don’t see the problem at all. Unless you don’t like the bands enough which clearly you don’t so never-mind…

  13. Amos Mantyla says:

What crap. I click the link and get a jpeg image of the single cover. NO MP3, not even a cute little clip. I wasted over an hour trying to fall for this ridiculous ploy. Screw RR records for messing with people like that.

  14. TWOAF says:

    Link doesn’t work.

  15. McTool says:

I am so stoked for this album. Multiple tracks over 15 minutes? This is the way things should be.

  16. zhitnik says:

Some of the most diverse sounding stuff I have heard DT do in years. Sounds like they are really getting over their personal wank sessions that they have recently called albums, and are actually getting back to making music. Oh, and Dragonforce even mentioned in the same sentence as Opeth? Heresy. Isn’t it a school day Adam? What are you doing posting here?

  17. Silence Disguised says:

OMG! I missed the download… didn’t see the post until this morning. Does anyone know if there is any other way to (legitimately) download this track without waiting until June?

    Bummer, dude…

  18. zhitnik says:

Here, I uploaded it to a free filesharing site. Grab away. http://www.filehosting.org/file/details/29140/Dream_Theater_-_A_Rite_of_Passage.mp3

  19. Will says:

I like the Freemason cover, I wonder if the album is going to be about secret societies or something?
