ROB FLYNN, HYPOCRITE?

Monday, August 17th, 2009 at 11:30am by

MetalSucks Maniac Matt Fields sent us the below video with this simple message:

“I really do not see what credential this man has to criticize Limp Bizkit.”

Which reminded me: Oh, right. Machine Head released a string of terrible albums in the 90s, all in the name of being trendy.

Now, I’ve mentioned this a couple of times in the past, always to outrage from MH fans. But there’s just no getting around it: some of these albums are terrible, and the band definitely looked, sounded, and felt like a crappy nu-metal outfit (I also believe this is the source of Kerry King’s infamous accusations that MH “have no integrity left” and “fooled me into thinking they’re metal.”).

So what do you think? Does Rob Flynn get to talk shit about Limp Bizkit, or is this a case of the pot calling the kettle black?

  • dlux

it is because of this song/era that i hate this band. that a dude in his 30s thought it would be a good idea to go with the spikeys/bleach haircut and “rap” makes me cringe.

    • Uglymicrowave

wow chimaira did this same shit…and you guys all fucking love them!

      • Superhans

Do you even no who chimaira are?!?!
thats probably the funniest statement i’ve ever read

  • Honeynutzz

I think this shit will always keep Machine Head from being taken seriously. In terms of being any kind of important metal act.

  • http://www.thedevilsdemons.com vincent p

I guess because I grew up in the early 90′s I associate this band with those albums, so I never understood why people defend them. It’s not like they toiled through the decade being Megadeth.

  • dlux

look at what they’re wearing!!!!! can we PLEASE forget the early 00′s? it was all “let’s wear wind suits with cool colors and have shitty hair and try to look sweet. nevermind sucking balls with our music.”

  • http://hookinmouth.net Hook In Mouth

Very hard to watch. The Blackening is still their best effort for reclamation since probably The More Things Change. Everything between The More Things Change and Empires is pretty much garbage. Perhaps it wouldn’t have been so bad if they just didn’t go with “the look”.

  • tyler09

yes he can. end of story

  • Mike

At least Machine Head has realized the error of their ways. I forgot about everything beforehand (even though “Through Ashes” was decent) once I listened to “The Blackening.” “Burn My Eyes” had some great metal songs on it as well.

As far as a know, Limp Bizkit were still playing and releasing the same garbage.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Alex-Frost/1022366059 Alex Frost

      Seconded.

    • stu1

I’m the opposite. At least LB has always been like this. Machinehead jumped on, and then off this band wagon. There’s at least more sincerity in LB.

      • http://dmxrr15@hotmail.com IsntaTOTALdouchebag10

I agree with you stu1. Rob Flynn with hair bleach can in hand, and neon designer wind breaker in his shopping cart actually though…”Yes, this is a good idea”

Granted, ‘The Blackening’ is an awesome album, but he actually thought this was cool at one point. Limp Bizkit have always been the same, there is something to be said for that.

  • Muro

Amazing how 3/4 of those musicians penned masterpieces such as “Imperium” or “A Farewell To Arms”…I guess inspiration catches you working and stripped off any trend.

    Cheers from Madrid!

    • dr j

It makes you wonder what some of these musicians today with obvious talent could be writing if they weren’t suckling on the trend teet.

      • Uglymicrowave

I def agree with you dude…If it wasnt all about the money..there would probably be some kick ass music out there from some of these fuckers

    • Sandy n Papo

Farewell to Arms, is one of the best songs of this decade

  • Chip Northcutt

    Psychology 101, its called projection.

  • http://www.themetalreporter.net TMR

Maaan, Machine Head really sucked back then…

  • Frampler

They were a band I had given up on after the first album, and then they managed to put out a record as good as the Blackening. It speaks wonders of Phil Demmel.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Will-Rich/636725841 Will Rich

I used to lik shit music as well, at least they’re decent now.

  • Metal Fuckin’ Dave

I’ve taken a lot of drugs to forget these years. A LOT of drugs. Thanks a lot.

  • Sean

Wow, that was pretty bad. I kinda have to agree, not sure why they think they can bash LB. Then again, I think The Blackening is fairly overrated also. Its a decent metal album, but nothing is all that innovative or exceptionally heavy about it. And some of the lyrics are still just as silly as a lot of LB stuff.

    • Mike

Flynn has always been touchy about Bizkit, if I remember corectly they stopped being friends with Skinlab after their singer said they were basically making Limp Bizkit albums.

  • josecarnage

    LOL FUCK MACHINE HEAD!!!!!

    • joseph montoya

Uhh. i think you mean MACHINE FUCKING HEAD!!!!!!

  • Dan-O

Seeing as how I got introduced to this band with “The Burning Red” (and quickly turned around and bought “The more things change” and “Burn My Eyes” because I thought they were cool), it’s hard for me to criticize. A good chunk of my move towards “real” metal was because of finding this band early on by a crappy album and then discovering older, better albums. However, I do believe that the band realized the trend hoping didn’t work for them and they had to claw their way back up to something legitimate by doing something they wanted to (hence “Ashes). I think maybe that’s one reason they keep touring, to try and shed the memory of crap and regain some “cred.”

In conclusion, maybe the best approach is, “forgive, but don’t fucking forget!” Otherwise, we might see MH and “crunk” in the same sentence.

  • Dan-O

Oh wait, I didn’t answer the question. Shit! Ummmmm… internet drama is entertaining. Criticize away!

  • http://www.myspace.com/beneaththesoil1 derka derka burger

    is this powerman 5000?

    • http://zunetracks.net loganarchy

      don’t hate. Powerman 5000 rules

      • stu1

        no

  • FarBeyondJuban

im a huge fan of machine head’s burn my eyes and the blackening, but after burn my eyes, they made this shit that sounded pretty fucking close to limp bizkit. so i dont think robb flynn is really allowed to criticize fred durst, even if durst is a turd and a half.

  • http://www.youtube.com/nobudgettelevision C.J. the D.J.

Yeah this was a dark time in MH’s career.

But don’t think for a second this was all their idea either.
They probably owed a lot of money to the label
and got told to go this route.

When you owe people money, you’re kind of at their mercy.

As for the haters, Gorgoroth has always been true to it’s roots.
    or something…

  • johnfuckingsmith

until now ive only heard the blackening. thx a fuking lot.

  • http://raiseyerfists.wordpress.com raiseyerfists

Robb Flynn is just as big an asshat as Fred Durst, but not half as rich. That’s what makes him so cranky.

  • Tommy Lindbergsen

The Burning Red was a shitty album and I hate Machine Head for making it.

    • Dave

thats your opinion, but mine is, I think you’re wrong, great songs on “The Burning Red” ‘From this Day” “the blood the sweat the tears” “Five” all great tunes. Smoke more of that dank buddy. lol! Machine Head is on their way to being the kings of “off the hook” metal. one song “Imperium” enough said

  • DemonicLemming

The ultimate hypocrisy is death metal fans talking shit about nu-metal.

    • Phill

      And how is that?

      • DemonicLemming

Because most death metal is just as much absolute shit as most nu-metal is. Trade the indecipherable grunts for rhyming lyrics, and the corpsepaint for…well, whatever fashion statement nu-metal bands use, and you’ve got the exact same thing. I just find it hilarious – and juvenile – to decide a band sucks not on their actual music, but based simply on the genre they belong to. It’s something someone with the intellect of a 4th grader does.

        • kjetil

You don’t know anything about Death Metal. Die now.

          • DemonicLemming

The fuck I don’t. It’s all bland and generic – the only differences between the bands is how they grunt, and I guaran-fucking-goddamn-tee you can’t tell me 75% of the lyrics to any death metal song without looking at the lyrics sheet. As far as lyrical content, the average death/black metal band has the variety of a kindergartner’s primer.

Death metal is just as “gimmicky” – since that’s evidently a term people around here use – as nu-metal is. There are some good death metal bands, a very few good black metal bands, and that’s it. Judging the entire genre on your little “The 10 bands I listen to” list doesn’t quite work, and anyone who doesn’t listen to a band because of the genre the music is in is a fucking idiot.

          • Biff Tannen

            I garaun-fucking-tee you that you’re a goddamn moron.
I can recite 100% of the lyrics to DOZENS of death metal songs.
I think your problem lies in the fact that you think of death metal only in terms of the modern, trendy kind such as Arsis, Behemoth, etc etc and all the other ultra compressed, technical wankery with gurgled vocals. Death Metal USED to be great. Morbid Angel in particular is a great example of good death metal….you could understand their lyrics without reading along, and they knew how to write good songs and not just wank and blast. There are a few bands nowadays playing the old school death metal such as Necros Christos from Germany and Ignivomous from Australia.
Nu-Metal, however NEVER had any musical merit.

          • kjetil

“the only differences between the bands is how they grunt” – wrong. DM can be surprisingly melodic, or perhaps with a focus on groovy riffs, or pure brutality. Some people don’t get it and if you don’t, then why moan about it? I’m not into “arty”, experimental/original music with deep lyrics I can sing along too, still I don’t flame every fucking band who plays this form of music.

Anyway, luckily for me I don’t particularly need to know all the lyrics for my songs, frankly I don’t care much for it. Still I can assure you that the lyrics cover more topics than you think, everything from death and gore, to primal desires / the beast in humans, the void / nothingness, insanity, viruses and illness, aliens, vikings and countless more. Mainline: It doesn’t need to be about undead eating your brains.

            Death metal “gimmicky”?

You say the lyrics – i dont care
The growls – what are you talking about? thats just brutal and brings power to the music, it’s one of the main reasons i listen to death metal..
It all sounds alike – Yes perhaps you feel this way, but most of the bands (the good ones anyway) has different focuses, perhaps on groovy riffs, or melodic riffs, technicality or special structures or whatever. There’s variety all right, but I guess you only see the brutality and if you can’t handle that, then why am I even trying to explain.

Oh and “anyone who doesn’t listen to a band because of the genre the music is in is a fucking idiot” – dude. It’s rap and metal, it’s like black and white.. it doesn’t mix. Genre definitely matters.. dude, have you ever heard the lyrics of Nu-metal bands? Have you heard how bland and GENERIC nu-metal is, not to mention the rapping is just wrong..

Defending nu-metal is pure and sheer stupidity.

          • DemonicLemming

I’m not thinking only in terms of new death metal – I’m commenting on it as an overall genre, with everything considered, like the way people enjoy doing with nu-metal. Like I said, there are some good death metal bands, and a couple good black metal bands, and most of them are old/older.

There are a couple good nu-metal bands – Static-X is one. The problem with that genre is that it encompasses WAY too much shit – from Limp Bizkit (which I never thought of as nu-metal, rather, rapcore, which has no redeeming qualities at all) to Korn, to SOAD, to Static-X. It’d be like combining every single metalcore, deathcore, black, and death metal band under one single genre.

The entire point is this – when you refer to a single genre and claim every single band within it is completely without merit, especially large ones like death metal (overall, it encompasses a lot), it’s making an asinine generalisation without even stopping to try and listen to different bands in the genre. I could listen to a couple of the new shitty deathcore bands, be disgusted, and then parade around and say that every single death metal band sucks because the few I listened to were shit. People in general, and on this site especially, have an extremely limited view of music – probably because of the inane, imbecilic notion that anyone who listens to anything but uber-hardcore metal is a pussy. Once you get out of the little box, you start to realise that almost every single kind of music out there, regardless of how pathetic most bands might be, has something good that can be said about it.

  • msv81

Wow, not even one person thinks “The Burning Red” was good? Seriously? Not one of you? Bullshit. I guarantee at least some of you dug the album a lot when it was first released. I still love the shit out of it, it’s an amazing album and the only “rap” vocals Rob did was on the song “Desire To Fire”; the rest of the album contains no rapping. I’ll concede to the fact that the band definitely trend hopped and their sound became distinctively “nu-metal” for “The Burning Red” and “Supercharger” (the latter of which is by far their worst album but even it has a few hidden gems), but I frankly couldn’t give a rat’s ass.

Furthermore, what the hell is SO wrong with “nu-metal”? Ok, wait, I can answer that; bands like Limp Bizkit, Crazytown, Methods of Mayhem, etc; definitely horrible from start to finish and have zero redeeming qualities. But old, original Korn (pre them sucking), Deftones, and System of a Down, those bands released some phenomenal albums, despite being grouped into (or, in Korn’s case, creating) the “nu-metal” category. There are nearly as many elitist fuckheads around here as on Blabbermouth. I recently went to Europe/Wacken 2009 and I totally get why metal as a whole is infinitely bigger there; the fans are far more accepting of all sub-genres of metal as opposed to my fellow American dipshits who continuously shit on everything that fails to fall into their specific, subjective taste.

    • jason

While I agree with most of your comment, I can’t remember a time when Korn was ever “good”.

      • http://zunetracks.net loganarchy

Touche, msv81. I like nu metal actually, and Korn is one of my favorite bands (though they do have some shitty albums).

        But this song sucks….

    • Biff Tannen

“Furthermore, what the hell is SO wrong with “nu-metal”? JUMP-DA-FUCK-UP and get the hell out of here. You’ve lost all merit you may have had.

  • jason

I can’t discern any difference between them jumping on the nu-metal bandwagon at the height of it’s popularity and them jumping BACK onto the thrash metal revival at the height of it’s popularity with the Blackening. It’s called pandering.

    • Tommy Lindbergsen

Exactly, and that is why I didn’t pay any attention to them then and I don’t pay any attention to them now.

      • zhitnik

Hey, call it what you want, but if pandering means bands come back to their original style and produce some killer records, then I will take it.

  • Sammy

What? Y’all don’t like Machine Bizkit?

  • (required)

This is a steaming pile… but not as bad as Limp Bizkit. There are degrees of shit, and Fred Durst is the absolute zero of the metal shit scale.

  • crapmcpoopin

you do things for money that you otherwise wouldn’t.

plus the blackening and ashes of the empire makes up for this.

    • crapmcpoopin

      through the ashes of empire*

  • \m/Eluveitie\m/

Got a machine head! Better than the rest!

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Keith-Brown/537636633 Keith Brown

If I remember right, there was an article in Revolver about Machine Head blaming the fact that the band was forced to bend to their label’s demands, and that they didn’t really want to release records like this. Besides, out of all the nu-metal you could post, this song isn’t the worst.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jake-Ryan/596440962 Jake Ryan

      hey keif haha.

plus they’ve completey reinvented themselves…i think we can forgive them after putting out an album like the blackening.

    • Biff Tannen

“Machine Head blaming the fact that the band was forced to bend to their label’s demands, and that they didn’t really want to release records like this.”

Any band that would drag their name through the mud by releasing albums they don’t support is either completely full of shit and trying to make excuses for sucking, or they are serious in which case they deserve NO support from music fans.

Flynn hasn’t done ANYTHING good since Vio-Lence

  • blah

as goofy as the burning red era was, its still a million times more listenable than their last 2 “I SWEAR WE ARE METAL GUYZZZ!” albums

    • http://zunetracks.net loganarchy

      Seriously? That’s just ignorance.

  • X.Y.Z

Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha… ha… hah.

    fuck Limp Bizkit.

  • http://www.youtube.com/user/agmkreptile FuckYourGayEmoHaircut

    meh…I’ll forgive them.

after all alot of metalheads went through a nu metal phase once in their lives.

    • Biff Tannen

      speak for yourself.

  • Sin and Death

Can anyone translate what is said at the end of the video? It’s probably something like, “These douchbag Americans with their silly hair and crappy music make me laugh! Ha ha ha!”

    • Moi

The guest on this TV show is Jean-Pierre Bacri (a famous french actor know for playing misanthropic characters who keep complaining about everything). The 2 hosts ask him : “You look puzzled, Jean-Pierre, don’t you ?”
He answers : “Well… that makes a change from Celine Dion”.

  • Ziltoid

Machine Head have always played trendy crap. When they started, groove shit was trendy (Pantera). When nu metal became trendy, MH as there. When it was suddenly cool to be tr00 again, Machine Head went back to crappy groove because that’s all they could do. And I have no doubts that Roadrunner had something to do with this. Trendy shit band on a trendy shit label.

    • vecima

      ziltoid hates pantera… that’s 3…

    • Biff Tannen

      Right as usual, Ziltoid.

  • vecima

machine head went through a period of suck, but even so, comparing them to LB is hurtful.

listen carefully – I don’t care what your status or situation.

Everyone always has the right to make fun of Limp Bizkit.

    Always

    • Hammer_Smashed_Hurtt

I actually really like this song. I actually like a lot of The Burning Red. Wasn’t a big fan of Supercharger, but whatever.

Regardless, yes, they have the right to talk shit about Limp Bizkit. If one group does a style of music better than another, then by all means, let the shit talking commence.

Machine Head is a killer band.
I like all Machine Head albums.
Granted some are way better then others.
The Blackening is hands down the best.
Limp Bizkit fucking blows end of story.

  • metalguy

maybe its my totally not gay man-crush on rob flynn, but ive heard worse. first time hearing nu-MH and im suprised how big trend hoppers they were
Trend hopping is gay. but they can make sum pretty good nu metal

  • g

Machine Head has always sucked balls.

  • Dude…

The Burning Red isn’t that bad of an album.

Supercharger, on the other hand, where Rob Flynn pledged to becoming a Jonathan Davis clone. Just listen to the verses of “Crashing Around You”, where he tries to do a scat/paranoid type voice thing while singing “Never good enough, never good enough”

  • John

I have yet to hear a single machine head song I can take seriously

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Mark-Gavin/1396340262 Mark Gavin

As terrible/corny as the nu-metal shit was by Robb, at least he never came up with “I did it all for the nookie, and then I take the cookie, and stick it up your YEAH, stick it up yo YEAH!”.

But the music is still pretty close to Limp Bizkit and totally revokes his right to talk shit about Limp Bizkit. It’s too bad, too, because I always thought Robb seemed like a really cool, down to earth guy.

  • Ben

Sorry but if you’re caught up on the style of clothing or hair that a band has then fuck you, you should go eat a bullet. Seriously, it’s music, it’s not a fashion show.

Also sorry, if you think The Burning Red is a terrible album then you have your head so far up your ass that… well, you shoot that bullet into your ass, thereby shooting yourself in the head.

I swear, so many of you are so caught up in popularity/lack of it/style/genre/petty bickering that you have absolutely NO grasp of music at all. There’s quite a few of you that I find utterly and completely pathetic, MS bloggers included and, sorry to disappoint you, I’d have no problem having this discussion with any of you in person and making you look like the humongous fools that you are.

    • Phill

      Machine Head is Wigger Slam.

    • stu1

So, you like rap metal? Cool. Good for you.

  • Beereded

“Rob Flynn, Hypocrite?” Nooooooooo. But yeah, Machine Head have always been horribly overated (and, horrible as well). To me, they’ve always seemed like a Nu-Metal band trying to play metal (even on Burn My Eyes). And, of course the whole fued with Limp Bizkit was very childish and petty, about as much so as both bands lyrics. Which was all about Rob Flynn trying to keep him and his bandmates (who have become so boring, monotonous and predictible, they can’t even stay awake during their live sets) relevant and in the news, ala Rob Flynn Disease. I don’t understand where this whole “terrible period” of Machine Head’s career as a band is coming from, unless you’re talking about what encompasses their entire musical career.

  • http://reaper-x.deviantart.com/ Reaper-X

    At least they grew up…

That’s more than you can say about Limp Dickskin.

  • http://www.concatenationrecords.com Kodiak

I used to hate The Burning Red, but I listened to it again a couple years ago and it wasn’t so bad. It wasn’t great by any means (Burn My Eyes, The More Things Change, Through the Ashes of Empires, and The Blackening are all much better), but it was listenable outside of the Message in a Bottle cover – ouch.

My question: when did they recruit Layne Staley to play drums? I swear he looks just like him – must be the shades.

  • http://richarddawkins.net/ RICHARD DAWKINS

THIS BAND ONLY EVER DID ONE GOOD ALBUM, IT WAS CALLED ‘BURN MY EYES’.

THE REMAINDER OF THEIR ‘CAREER’ HAS MADE ME WANT TO ‘BURN MY EARS’.

THE BLACKENING IS ALSO A TERRIBLE ALBUM BY THE WAY. THAT SHIT IS WORSE THAN ANY TRENDY HIPSTER NEO-THRASH REVIVAL SHIT.

  • Phill

Let’s face it. The only thing worth listening to that Rob Flynn was ever involved with was Vio-lence. Machine Head will never write an album as cool as “Eternal Nightmare” or “Oppressing the Masses”.

    • Biff Tannen

THANK YOU. I was patiently reading through the entire comments section to see if even ONE person on here was aware of Vio-Lence. Looks like you and I are the only ones.
I wonder if the MH fan boys that run this site are even aware of them? I doubt it.

  • http://myspace.com/rodolrocks Rodolrocks

:s wtf!? damn i cant belive those are the same dudes who make such a masterpiece like the blackening..

  • Sawan

Well Machine Head ****ed up their career by making those shitty nu-metal albums.Though they have gained respect thanks to the latest album these “events” will never be forgotten unless they make 3 albums just as good as The Blackening

  • http://www.myspace.com/uglydirge aaron m.

meh. machine head really only released two shitty albums. although the burning red is a fairly heinous turd, the fact is that robb flynn wrote fucking “davidian” and therefore he fucking rules, no matter how big of a douchebag he looked like in 95.

  • Chris L

Yo, this shit be dope! Ya Heard !

  • Failure

Fact is as much as Kerry King is metal, he’s also a think-headed douche-tool. Sometimes I used to get confused at which end was his head and which was his ass. Thankfully male pattern baldness took care of that. But his head still sounds just like his ass, and while i’ll agree that MH aren’t the greatest band in the world even the crappy nu-metal shit they made had solo’s and what-not, so to an extent I commend that. And further more who isn’t more metal than fred durst, fuck if crazytown made fun of limp turd i’d allow it. My fucking toe nails are more metal than those fucks.

  • Kris K

So i was into skating, baggy jeans and VANS.

Then when i figured out that all punks where 40+ lazy farts
I turned to Black Metal. Worst thing i ever did!!
    Now non of the above.
    Point?
Machine Head are the greatest metal band ever!! So they made a Nu-Metal album.
Any one who disses this band for above video are losing out on the single best Metal record EVER!!
Y this was not on your list of “best of…. so far” list is beyond me.
Take a bow for the monster that is

It’s easy to be judgemental, that’s the best thing about it. But it’s a fact that Machine Head jumped on a trend at this point in their career while Limp Bizkit have stuck to their sound. Should Flynn be damned to eternity for that? I don’t think so but the world really wants to do what Ahrue Luster has to say about this…
