KENNETH SCHALK, DRUM MASTER

Tuesday, August 25th, 2009 at 1:00pm by Vince Neilstein

I’ve really been enjoying Frank Godla’s “Frank’s Favorite Drummers” series on Metal Injection over the past few weeks; I’ve gotten to see live footage of some of my own favorite drummers and I’ve also learned about incredibly skilled skinsmen I’d never heard of before. Today’s entry focuses on Kenneth Schalk of Candiria, a man who proves that you really only need a 4-piece kit to kick fucking ass on the drums. Mike Portnoy’s 10,765-piece monster? Psssshhh.

  1. Candiria never got their due. I imagine part of it is that they incorporated rap during the height of nu-metal, but the band proved that you can actually do creative things with one-chord grooves and funk drumming in metal. Schalk is a god. These guys need to start recording again.

  2. Candiria were sick, but that last record was SHIT. The one where they went all Alien Ant Farm?

That is some great drummers mentioned. Ken Schalk never gets enough credit.

i was never much of a candiria fan, but would be an idiot to deny that ken was a hell of a drummer. the size of his kit is proof that less is always more…

Sure, Mik ePortnoy uses quite a bit of drums but not as much as Terry Bozzio:

Still, there are Some pretty damn good drummers on that list(Bobby Jarzombek fucking kills – Gotta give him credit for listing that guy),BUT, Akira Jimbo is to drumming what Bruce Lee was to Martial Arts/Philosophy…

For the uninitiated: Mr. Jimbo uses no backing tracks or sequencers. That means, all the music you are hearing is being played by him either on the acoustic drums or the triggers he has attached to the kit:
