THEOCRACY’S MATT SMITH PAYS TRIBUTE TO METALLICA’S ST. ANGER
Thursday, October 1st, 2009 at 2:30pm by Axl RosenbergZilty sent this one in… he is on a roll today!
This “tribute” to what is (in?)arguably the worst and most reviled Metallica album in that band’s career was created by Matt Smith of the Christian power metal band Theocracy, and is probably the best thing ever to be created by a Christian power metal band. It’s sophmoric, sure, but that doesn’t mean it’s not funny.
We have a good friend who actually really likes St. Anger and the snare sound on that record. To that friend, who I love like a brother and I know is reading this, I can only say: ppppffffffftttt.

That’s a really old video.
On the topic of shitty snare sounds, obviously the calypso snare sound on this album is unforgivable. But the triggered snare sound that’s turning up on every other metal album these days is no better, and to Lars’ credit, at least he didn’t quantize his whole boring drum performance on this album.
So his snare is unforgiven? I, II, or III?
Best tribute EVER!!
Lol that was awesome.
I heard they used a trashcan for a snare on that record. Wait, let me rephrase that, when I heard the record I assumed they used a trashcan for a snare drum because I’ve never heard a snare sound that bad before.
this made my fuckin week! best tribute EVER!!!
Wow, this is ancient….hilarious, yes, but ancient. I remember hearing this right after “St, Anus” was released.
fantastic.
I rolled my eyes when I saw this post, and thought, “Ugh. Weak. Another *oh-so-hilarious* and snarky evisceration of St Anger? Greeeeeeaaaaat.”
Boy was I wrong! That was hilarious.
DOUBLE BAAAASSAHH!!!! :-)
Geeeeniusss-AAAH
Hahaha. This made me smile. TO CAPTURE THESE MOMENTS OF GENIUS-AH
Another one who loves this “tribute” and also enjoys St. Anger.
this band has done some other funny stuff too. A Christmas special: Deck the Joy, a mashup metal song of Deck the Halls and Joy to the World. Also they released a fake teaser of their last album that was done with Crotchduster-esque style switching.
Damn straight. This band also happens to make great music when they’re serious as well.
They release a joke song around Christmas each year, and last year’s “Rudolph vs. Frosty” was pretty funny.
Lol I loved St. Anger, and this was hilarious, too. It basically sums up the whole record o.O
This parody: Great!
Some Kind of Monster, the documentary about the making of St. Anger: Also great!
St. Anger: horrible!
Why doesn’t that add up?
Oh, and This Monster Lives, the book about the documentary, is also great.
This is pure win!
Fucking Gold!
That was kind of funny, if I hadn’t heard all of those jokes before.
Er, I mean, RECYCLED JOKES MAKE ME ROFLMAO.
Fantastic.
Ah no way!! I was sent an mp3 of this about four or five years ago, but my hard drive has long since been wiped. Haven’t heard this in aaaaaaaaaages! Love this tribute… oooOOOoooOOOh, what a good band we are…”
LOL I shit my pants when the guy goes “yeah” and the drums come in completely obscuring every other sound. Awesome!
Holy fuck is he beating on the fender wall of a seventies chevy nova?
Very realistic :)
I think I pee’d a little. Holy shit that’s good stuff.
I feel like everyone knows one schmuck who says he likes St. Anger, just to be “different”. I think these people are utterly insincere. No one actually likes St. Anger. If you take any pleasure in listening to St. Anger then you must be such a masochist that having a molten rod up your ass and a vicegrip on your genitals just doesn’t do it for you anymore.
I’ve had this track on my HDD for fucking years, it was one of my staples for pissing off assholes when I was Djing at my local club, once some douche got up to dance thinking it was actually St. Anger, I laughed heartily but not as much as when I played the Zombie Apocalypse cover of Welcome To The Jungle, that always went down a treat as people suddenly realised it was a cover
Ahhh, so THAT’S where my ‘YEAH! (shit snare, shit snare, shit snare)’ ringtone came from. My brother sent me that a couple of years ago and we joked about it a lot, but neither of us knew where it came from. Thanks for posting.
Theocracy is actually a pretty damn good band. You wouldn’t know it from this “tribute” though.
