THE CHRONICLES OF ISRAFEL

chronicles of israfelAnd now for something different.

Our inboxes with have been flooded with “Readers’ Choice” entries of late. By and large people seem especially prone to sending us bands that can loosely be defined as deathcore, metalcore, or Sumeriancore, but claiming that for some barely perceptible reason THIS band is different and therefore worthy of our attention. They almost never are.

Tim Shanks sent us a link to a band called The Chronicles of Israfel that falls into none of the above categories or any easily-definable sub-genres at all other than “really fucking impressive.” This Montreal one-man project falls somewhere in the nebulous continuum between Devin Townsend, Cynic, Meshuggah, Porcupine Tree, Opeth, King’s X and Tool. They (he) play complex, melodic but punishing progressive metal that doesn’t lose sight of the art of writing actual “songs.”

If that description doesn’t pique your interest, I’m not sure what else there is that I can say… so just check out the 7-song collection on the Chronicles of Israfel MySpace page. I actually think the songs farther down the list are the strongest. I listened to all 7 though, and I wish there were more.

The record is stellar. Dom is already working on the follow up. Thank God Scars on Broadway is over.
In fact he’s looking for a new vocalist. Anyone who wants the album e-mail me.

I remember this one metal website that gave the album 7 or 8/10.
To think this same guy was once in a band with Lukas Rossi(Lead singer of the infamous RockStar Supernova)

He has got some good ideas going for him. It is certainly creative, but sometimes I feel it lacks focus or something, and i can’t quite put my finger on it. All the bands mentioned about seem to really have a plan for their songs, and I feel that these don’t always.

    wow!

i bought this album about 2 years ago. it’s quite unbelievable. heavy, progressive, melodic. great stuff, especially considering pulse ultra was so goddamn awful

Dom is my “guitar god”! Both the Pulse Ultra and The Chronicles… album is beyond, as far as riffs, inventive melodies and song structure goes. Can´t wait for the upcoming album!

I’m a big Pulse Ultra fan, and I’m just now checking this stuff out for the first time…I dig it!!

Fact: this dude was to play bass in Scars on Broadway before Daron Malakian freaked out and decided not to tour.

    • Perry

Fact: Dom DID tour with Scars On Broadway. They did spot dates in the U.S including Coachella and 2 opening slots for Metallica. They also did a dozen or so shows in Europe.

Tim Shanks is my drummer! Holy shit! One of us finally got onto Metal Sucks, my life is now complete.

Dom is working on the next album and I have no doubts it will match or surpass this one. He is clearly a guitarist with his own voice and the talent to back it up.

    His myspace: http://www.myspace.com/thechroniclesofisrafel

    You GO Dom!!
