WHAT DO WE THINK OF SOTHIS?

Monday, February 8th, 2010 at 12:59pm by

Do we simply dismiss them because they play symphonic black metal, which Cosmo Lee posits might be “the worst kind of metal ever invented”? Or do we give them a shot to prove their own artistic merit independent of any pre-conceived genre restrictions or notions? I, for one, have no problems with symphonic black metal, especially the less cheesy variety proffered by Sothis. On a completely superficial level I also happen to dig their combination of corpse paint and giant beards.

But what the fuck does it matter what I think? What do YOU think? Watch their new video for “Of Night and Silence” and let us know.

Lmao, the drummer is metal as fuck.

  • rancidcorpse

shit sucks always has always will

  • Kuranes

Emperor has symphonic elements, so does that make them suck too? This band is okay.

  • Gideon

Hey, everyone! look, a melodic black metal band that doesn’t suck ass! not like that nicholas cage’s son’s band. woah, they suck.

    • Kye

I wouldn’t even call that horrid band black metal. They’re a lot closer to Killswitch with symphonic shit, raspier vocals, and corpse paint.

This is pretty cool. The keyboards are a bit cheesy though.

I actually prefer my black metal symphonic, but that’s also because I’m a sucker for symphonic anything, because adding a symphony makes shit EPIC.

  • Peter Griffin

A question. Why is there so many black metal songs that start with the word “Of”? Of night and silence, of this and that bla bla bla…

    • http://thenumberoftheblog.wordpress.com DemiGodRaven

And then they always spell it ‘OV’. What’s the case for this? Behemoth loves this one, I’m waiting for a tour diary or something called ‘Ov Taco Bell and Ov Explosive Diarrhea’.

      • Peter Griffin

YES! Behemoth loves spelling it OV!

Hahaha I’d probably skip that tour diary tho!

        • Stank

          They’re polish, idiot.

This is pretty good – and I was expecting 2 chord progressions and cheesy choir to go with it. And the music video is metal and not “we’re in corpse paint!!! blah!!!”

I’ve seen this band live and they sounded n looked cheesy, also very generic. Nothing impressive. LAME BAND

  • NoNameNoSlogan

First of all who gives a fuck what Cosmo Lee thinks. Second, these guys are pretty good but why do they get a pass? Any Dimmu Borgir news on this site is making fun of them. Sothis is just as cheesy, if not more so…did you look at the band photos on their myspace page??

  • Trux

what do I think??… oh yes, they suck big time !!ª

  • evilfatguy

    Very average black metal.

  • evilfatguy

Also, the inclusion of synth strings shouldn’t be the only qualifier to being called “symphonic”.

  • I

Sothis is what your basic symphonic black metal band sounds like?.

  • Cryzthormagnusian

Stop letting Cosmo Lee influence you.

  • SonOF

Sounds pretty good to me. This isn’t a style I’m into by any means, but this is far from bad.

  • Andy Synn

I like black metal (big surprise there, huh?) of various different types.

Didn’t really like this band. Nothing terrible about them, jsut nothing to grab me too strongly.

I would recommend Vesania as a good example of symphonic/melodic black metal instead.

I’m down with this. They’re not amazing, but I think they’ve got the right attitude.

And seriously, that is the most metal looking drummer EVER.

  • Dave

    I like it.

  • B. Ewing

Not Wonderful…but i’d take these guys over almost all of this years Mayhem Fest bands

      Second.

  • Aaron

Sounds like Death Cult Armageddon . If you like that sort of thing. I need to be in the mood to storm a castle or something.

  • canea

I could be into it if my feet were cold enough.

WTF? Why did they name themselves after a Vader song? Or should I say a Vader EP? I mean I know the name comes from Egypt and all, but really who does know where it originated in the metal world. Lame Dimmu coverband. Next.

I agree with Cosmo Lee 9 times out of 10, but I think Sothis puts out some fun shit. I’m not steeped enough in black metal to know if it’s trve, but I like not only this video but the whole album it came from. People should take take the sticks out of their butts and give it an honest listen.

Meh, the song is ok. But I think the video is a bit annoying especially the close-ups.

  • Stank

Melodic/Symphonic black metal is the only tolerable form of black metal. yeah i said it.

  • Bob

Another band put it best, “So they had fake drums in front of fake drums…”
