NEW PORCUPINE TREE VIDEO IS AWESOME, TOOLISH

Friday, July 9th, 2010 at 2:00pm by

Whenever I see a stop-motion animation video which tells the story of some weird little dude doing bizarre and semi-surrealistic things, my mind immediately goes to Tool. Of course, Tool didn’t invent creepy stop-motion animation, but they certainly popularized its use in music videos. (And by “popularized,” I mean, “Are responsible for the one, maybe two videos a year that do this.”) And it’s hard for me to imagine that anyone would watch Porcupine Tree’s new video, for “Bonnie the Cat,” without thinking of “Sober” — even if the color scheme and overall tone is very different.

The video’s not currently embeddable, but you can check it out here. It’s pretty cool and — bonus! — has a robot going down on another robot. So hopefully that’ll be enough to restore your faith in music videos.

The song comes off of Porcupine Tree’s latest, The Incident, which is out now on Roadrunner.

All i had to do was look at the screen cap and it made me think of Tool. So, yeah, agree.

  • iolanach

Great video, but Bonnie the Cat? Probably my least favorite song off The Incident (which is a great album, btw).

Agreed. I expected a video for Time Flies or Drawing the Line.

They already made a video for Time Flies. But they edited the hell out of the song so most of the middle part of the song is gone in the video. Also, I think this was the video they used in their live show for Bonnie the Cat; not 100% positive though.

They made a video for the radio edit, then? I kind of like the edit better, to be honest. It doesn’t drag as much. Sometimes I think Wilson just thinks “What? We haven’t recorded a 10+ minute song for this record yet? I’ll fix that!”

Cool video, reminded me how great their new album is.

  • CYN1C

Fucking Porcupine Tree! Yet another reason why they are one of the few bands still worth listening to.

  • Vlygar

Loved the video, didn’t care for the song.

  • Altered Bestiality

“New Porcupine Tree album is terrible, rubbish.”

Lazy fucking drony crap. You’d figure since theyve done work for Opeth and had decent albums in that past that they could churn out a good new release.

Instead we have a double-CD of rotting baby diaper.

ok, i understand why i think i might like this band, exept for the fact that its a blatant tool copy band. i know that gets thrown around alot but, for fuck sake….way to cop a style..iut seems all the new acts of the last 5 years have beem meshuggah and tool influenced, which in itself is not bad, but taking everything that makes those bands unique and imitating it is not what i call a band.

    • Dwarfskeet

Clearly you haven’t heard much of Porcupine Tree.

    • John

Did you just call Porcupine Tree a “new” act? They formed in 1987.

Also, the majority of their catalogue is 70′s prog-influenced pop rock. They’ve only gotten more “metal” with their last few releases.

This is what Porcupine Tree sounds like most of the time: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OIM5M6FmnmY&feature=related

Tool rip off? If I were to call shenanigans on PT for ripping someone off it would be Pink Floyd but even that is kinda pushing it.

Couldn’t get through the song :-(

  • crimsonking58

Words can not begin to describe the stupidity in calling Porcupine Tree a Tool rip-off. The video, yeah kind of, but their music, fuck no. The Incident is a really shitty album, complete disappointment. Listen to In Abesentia, The Sky Moves Sideways, or Signify and try to tell me that THOSE sound like tool. Much better, stronger albums than the over-hyped PoS that is The Incident. I still think Bonnie The Cat is a pretty cool song, but not their best by any means whatsoever.

Porcupine Tree is one of my top 3 favorite bands, but I am getting sick of Steven Wilson letting everyone know how much he loves Meshuggah.

i can’t believe some of these comments, the incident is a masterpiece! you fuckers really do hate everything.

i loved The Incident. i don’t get where people are coming from when they talk about Wilson’s riffs all sounding like Meshuggah. just because they’re distorted and downtuned doesn’t make them Meshuggah-esque. though tbh i enjoy PT’s heavier songs less than their more ethereal stuff like Heart Attack in a Layby, Fadeaway, etc

Bonnie The Cat is probably my least favorite one on The Incident

I have more of an issue when the heavy parts come out of nowhere. And it’s not just because the guitars distorted and downtuned, but the band does the same Meshuggah- like polyrhythms, and even even the bass has that mechanical tone in some parts.

If you likes yourself some creepy stop motion, you best check out Jan Svankmeier and his acolytes the Brothers Quay.

  • Moose_Knuckle

Yeah not one of their best songs but they are a great band and the incident is a solid album.

this video is trippy but sometimes i think there’s a reason when i don’t hear of bands like this that have a billion cds out but everyone’s like OH MY GOD THEY’RE AMAZING. i love getting into new bands but i looked up their disco and i see they have like 10 plus cds i’m like wow i’ve never heard of this band nor do i care, but i want to care, but that’s a lot of music to listen to.

what are the best porcupine tree cds?

    • Caleb

Their four most recent with drummer Gavin Harrison and FOR GOD SAKES if you’ve never heard the man he’ll blow your mind. In Absentia, Deadwing, Fear of a Blank Planet, and The Incident. As someone up a bit said Signify is a good one and so is Lightbulb Sun, however I find the sound is incredibly underwhelming without Harrison and he is about 85% of the reason I like PT

  • brian

I went to see PT when they came to the House of Blues Houston, having never heard any of their catalogue. like Tool they banned photography or recording of their show. That’s where the comparisons should end. PT put on absolutely the WORST live show I have ever seen. They played the incident all the way through and all i could think about was how limp wristed their music is. Pussy rock at its worst.

  • kenny

the song and video are completely boring, lackluster and dorky, even the name of the song is completely ridiculous and even more dorky. nothing i can take seriously. this is just, simply, not good at all, in all aspects, and this isnt coming from a “tool rip off” state of mind either. it just bland.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Nai-Nei/824962504 Nai Nei

Everything is great with Porcupine Tree!

  • Elvin

Different video. But the songs sucks hard anyway.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Mike-Callahan/780594656 Mike Callahan

The people who claim Tool rip off are listening with their eyes and not their ears.

  • Grantham Blakely

anyone attacking this band is either not thinking correctly, haven’t heard the right material (IE didn’t do their homework on the subject), or is an ignorant human being and are part of the reason that shitty bands are so much more successful than these masterminds. They do NOT sound like Tool. These guys are GENIUS and I only feel sorry for you if you manage to somehow overlook that. Listen to more than 5% of their music before making up your mind, and don’t be so aggressive and “factual” with your opinions…they’re just your opinions, not fact. Listen to Stupid Dream and any of the other albums listed above….
