EXCLUSIVE PREMIERE: THE CONTORTIONIST – “ADVENT”

Tuesday, August 24th, 2010 at 1:15pm by

So, here we are in late 2010, two years after Sumeriancore first gnashed its’ gnarly teeth into the world’s Internet metal undercurrent and one year after it exploded up above it. We’re now firmly in the 2nd generation of the burgeoning sub-genre, meaning that today’s up and coming Sumeriancore bands have the first generation’s music to draw upon as direct influence instead of just combining the influences that spawned it in the first place. And of course, with any growing musical movement comes a ton of new bands. For 2nd gen Sumeriancore (let’s call it 2GSC for the sake of coining a completely ridiculous and unnecessary acronym), which bands will rise above and which will blend into the pack?

Of all the 2GCS bands coming into the spotlight of late, Indiana’s The Contortionist certainly have a shot at sticking around. Their sound incorporates the Meshuggah-style down-tuned riffing that’s a trademark of the genre but doesn’t take the melody over the top the way a band like Periphery does. They’ve also got plenty of lead chops but don’t take those over the top either, like, say Animals as Leaders do. Theirs is a brand that shows some restraint, ala The Binary Code, but their songs, shorter, catchier and seemingly willing to indulge in certain genre cliches (heyo tritone breakdown!), seem to go for the jugular.

Take a gander at their new track “Advent” below, and also at “Flourish” posted on their MySpace page. Both songs come from Exoplanet, out next Tuesday, August 31st, on Good Fight Entertainment. Pre-order it here. Let us know what you think.

sumeriancore bands really are all starting to sound the same.

    • Bayonetwork

I love the Contortionist but Advent is the exact same song as Realms but with different lyrics lmao. Like literally. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=inonjHhKCx4&feature=related

      • HB_Dad

I sure as hell hope they didn’t use this same cheap tactic with the rest of the album. This is the first blemish I’ve encountered with this album. The other two songs they’ve released so far are amazing and this one is great too but the fact they reused an older song really feels like a copout. I hope this means the CD wasn’t too short where they started having to add filler in this way.

        • http://www.facebook.com/people/Hayden-Nease/675398726 Hayden Nease

This is the second re-hashed song.

        • Brett Sibley

ive listened to the whole album and its fantastic, they redid every song on the Apparition ep except Predator, Eyes: Opened and Apparition, so really they only redid 4 songs out of the 11 tracks on the album, thats 7 brand new songs

          • Lordofdarkness98

I’m glad they decided not to touch the best song on apparition, predator, but still. geez.

    • Freind For You

      1. theyre not on sumerian records?
      2. Whats the matter with sounding “kindof” the same if the sound, sounds good?
      3. None of the Sumerian bands sound the same.

      • jeff

        i believe this too!

  • MadSkins

Had to chuckle at this post. Only in the internet age can a pundit refer to two years as a “generation” with a straight face. God I’m old.

  • GoingDeaf?

These bands might sound a bit less like clones if they didn’t all use the EXACT SAME GUITAR TONE and production sound. It’s like they all received Axe FX processors with their Sumerian contracts.

    • Tomdavis

The Contortionist is signed by Good Fight Records, not Sumerian. But you almost look like you know what your talking about.

      • GoingDeaf?

Thanks for fact-checking the part of my post that had nothing to do with my point. You really showed me! Whether they are on Sumerian or are a clone of a Sumerian band is irrelevant… they still have nothing new to offer.

        • Lordofdarkness98

They did up until they actually did get signed recently and changed members.

The first two EPs were actually pretty good and had their own vibes, now its garbage

          • Freind For You

Most of the “metal” songs on Exoplanet are song off their other EPs. SO, youre wrong on that part. And i think you just dont like the melodic parts where they arent breaking down.

  • Honeynutzz

Again this sounds like a song Meshuggah already wrote so I’ll listen to that.

  • http://www.myspace.com/fallenfew BobFish

The tones are similar, but you get that across most genres. At least there’s more than one tone used in the production. I like it,it sounds dense and epic when its not lost in dissonant breakdowns.

    • GoingDeaf?

It’s true, there a lot of similar tones across the metal world. For me, the problem lies with using the same distinctive tone to play the same distinctive style. For example, Nails uses the “Entombed/Dismember” guitar tone, but no one could say they sound like those bands. If you take too much from only one influence, you’re just going to sound unoriginal and derivative. This is the problem with the Meshuggah clones….their vision is too narrow.

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Dan-Burton/784250631 Dan Burton

I ruddy love Nails. Probably one of my favourite records of this year.

        • GoingDeaf?

Yup…. just saw them this past weekend. They decimated the small club.

  • Jake

Less melody and more breakdowns. And this is a good thing how?

  • Silas

They’re not signed with sumerian. Although i think their first produced album sounded wayyyyy better. with the dave on vocals.

  • Kuranes
  • Ryd1ZZ

I like it. Going to check out the whole album for sure.

  • tyler

is it just me or does this song have basically the same exact instrumentals as one of their songs off their last cd? kinda lame. i wish dave was still in the band. but still i give them props they are coming up

    • Freind For You

Its their first real cd. they’ll make new songs once they have some time. They got signed and within the first 4 months of getting signed they have a new cd out with a few new songs that sound great. i see no problem with them putting old songs on there re-vamped.

  • DemonicLemming

I’m starting to like the term “Sumeriancore”. Whenever I see a band described as such, it saves me wasted time from bothering to listen to them.

    • GoingDeaf?

      1

  • Waldo

    Sick

  • treghet

This doesn’t sound like the shitty band I heard 2 years ago. I’m surprised at how much better they sound now.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Hayden-Nease/675398726 Hayden Nease

I don’t understand…they just rerecorded songs from Apparition and it ended up sounding worse.
    I’m so disappointed.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Dan-Burton/784250631 Dan Burton

I like two Sumeriancore bands… After The Burial and Periphery. I don’t like this. Something sounds really unnatural about the sound here. It sounds too compressed and is missing some punch.

It also makes me really miss Sikth and realise how way ahead of their time they were. That is one band I wish would reform.

  • PatrickSTL

This does sound worst than “Realms” but I am still stoked for this album. This band is good.

  • http://www.myspace.com/thestarsthrewdowntheirspears Tim

Pre-ordered yesterday. Really excited for it!

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Stephen-Parker/1048411723 Stephen Parker

    Great art…not so great music.

  • leo

this is nothing like those sumeriancore bands . this is a fucking great band and better than within the ruins by a long shot . vince you are a retard .

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Mikey-Ck-Vanderven/502827008 Mikey Ck Vanderven

exactly. i dont understand whats so bad about sumerian records anyway. the only band i dont understand yet is “Conducting from the Grave”

      good band

      good record company

      good everything

      • Freind For You

Mikey i completely agree with you. These sumeriancore bands arent bad. theyre all unique and even though everyone likes to hate on them for sounding like meshuggah. I have no problam with them sounding kinda like meshuggah. All the songs on this CD are nothing like meshuggah besides for the guitar tone. meshugggah is just a big very very very cool complex breakdown, The contortionist has melody.

  • CrestalMyth

The music is almost as bad as the cover.

  • i don’t hate metal

    sick

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Theron-Brown/1038120019 Theron Brown

with all the shit talking and references to the oh so godly Meshugga, I may as well publicly wonder:

Does Meshugga ever use guitars with more than 2 fucking frets?
If so, the should probably check out whats goin on with the other 22. They might actually come of up with something interesting

    • John

You have heard Meshuggah before, right?

      • Randy

What John said. I’m pretty sure the guitarists in Meshuggah were both using 8-string guitars with no bassist for awhile. And incorporating plenty of frets.

        • J-Rod

What J and R said. Theron Brown = Assen Clown

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Mikey-Ck-Vanderven/502827008 Mikey Ck Vanderven

i only know two songs from the Contortionist from their EP or whatever they released before this album, and i enjoyed both the songs.

i personally am not a huge fan of the singer, unless he stepped it up on the new record coming up, but i wish there was a bit of singing to match up with the amazing melody they do.

to be honest though, when i first heard “Eyes Closed”, i instantly said “Wow, this reminds me of an old Misery Signals song” and thats all i get reminded of each time i listen to that song

other songs, i feel like i hear other pieces of other songs rehashed. i hear alot of BTM style singing, and that bugged me, heard alot of misery signals inspired stuff, that bugged me, even some ID stuff that kinda bugged me out

none theless, im happy that this band is getting attention, im happy they’re going to be touring with The Red Chord, Acacia Strain, and Terror, and I look forward to seeing their live set with their fuckign retarded singer lmao

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Mikey-Ck-Vanderven/502827008 Mikey Ck Vanderven

oh, and the beginning of Eyes Closed reminds me of that one Periphery song…………. if anyone knows what im talking about…. even the groovy strumming they do….. even reminds me of that one solo song that that russian dude Karen made

as beautiful as this bands music is, IT does sound like rehashed epic songs from other bands

      i gotta say it

  • Jordan King

To everyone making noise about the REPRISE of tracks off apparition, in no way was this filler. This was the intent from the get go in January 2010. They weren’t supposed to have all different lyrics but due to losing their old vocalist they were left with no choice but to rewrite. In my opinion (as someone extremely close to the band and someone who’s name is in the liner) no one can make a judgment call until you’ve heard the entire record as a whole and read through the lyrics to actual see what the PURPOSE of this album was. I dare you to find another “sumerian core band” with lyrics and musical ability as deep as what these dudes are doing.

  • fuzzy420

Thank you Jordan King, this band is going to go big places, and I already know it. This band isn’t one that you can listen through computer speakers, and be completely satisfied. Listen to both of their albums as a whole, Apparition and Exoplanet. If you fuckers actually had open minds, you might see that this band totally takes you to a new level with their songs.

  • KMFCM

Danza is still better than this

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Anthony-William-Steele/1235325417 Anthony William Steele

Honestly you can call them what you will.. sumericore messhugah rip offs, i really dont care cause almost every metal band sounds exactly like another metal band no matter what genre you are in. and its rediculous to ridicule a band because they sound similar in tone to another… goddamn messhugah may have started the tone but they dont own it, and i definately dont get why anyone has the right to say noone can pull influence from messhugah. the contortionist is more like between the buried and me anyway. I personaly love this album, exoplanet sounds solid and has a very conceptual feel to it. i love the album and love the new vocals and lyrics.

  • toddy

album is pretty fucking good, no idea what people are getting so angry about.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Connor-Louiselle/502639276 Connor Louiselle

Everyone’s just pissed for the sake of being pissed. They all dream of a world where everyone still thought terribly produced thrash albums were the prime aspect of the metal world.

Go hold a beer to your chest, metallic*nts.

  • http://WahamoBlamiero ben

this is the single greatest album ive ever heard in my entire life. theres no song on here with anything wrong with it, this is music at its finest. buy it right the fuck now its worth far more than every penny
