NOW THIS IS HOW YOU DO A DRUM COVER ON YOUTUBE

Wednesday, September 15th, 2010 at 2:00pm by

Completely stripped down and bare bones, or as reader Ivan Petrov describes it, “how we do math-metal in Russia.” What’s remarkable and even sobering about this video is that it illustrates just how simple Tomas Haake ‘sdrum patterns actually are when you break them down (although those double-bass patters are by no means easy to execute). Lulz at the closing credits!

Meshuggah drum parts aren’t simple to play at all. That they sound or appear simple is the magic of Tomas Haake.

    • Edika

Meshuggah is one of the few bands that can change a gazillion time signatures in each song and between songs and still everything sound the same. That is the “magic” of Meshuggah !

    • Grymmbear

      Agreed.

Hands may be straight 4/4, but the feet are something different entirely.

I decry such violence against a defenseless pillow!

  • uLy

Meshuggah was never really complex or hard to do to begin with????

    • evilfatguy

Seconded. Not sure where/when this myth was started, and lord knows why it’s being perpetuated. Maybe all the die-hard Tool fans needed another mediocre band to jizz over once they finally realized that Tool had been releasing the same song for a solid three albums.

      This = genius.

  • vagoo

yeah, all Meshuggah is just crazy time signatures or changing time signatures with Haake playing 4/4 or some steady pattern overtop of it… not that this isn’t cool or anything.. go polymeter….

(ok not ALL Meshuggah, but a lot)

  • Tomas Haake

hope you know how to play it when you say it’s simple.

Some people just have to be too cool for school and say “that isn’t hard”, or “Meshuggah’s stuff all sounds the same”. Guess what? You’re all idiots who don’t know anything about music.

Nailed it. I swear sometimes I can’t tell the difference between metalsucks comment section and youtube’s.

  • Lee

The assessment of the parts being simple is utterly ill conceived. That would imply that anyone with a modicum of skill could do it. This is simply not the case. What he does is incredibly difficult. He manages to anchor the rhythm with a steady 1/4 note pulse while adapting the rest of his limbs to match the musical chaos going on around him. The fact that it SOUNDS simple to fuckwits who have never tried to play one of their songs is a testament to how good he really is.
