Matt Pike in one of his most awesomest t-shirts, with some dude I don’t know.

So last week Vince and I hit up the Sleep reunion show (read our friend Justina Villanueva’s review at Noisecreep), and as we were watching the mighty Matt Pike, we turned to one another and were all, “Wow, that dude has a lot of awesome t-shirts!” I mean, Vince and I have some pretty extensive t-shirt collections full of all kinds of cool shit, but that Matt Pike… man. I’ve never seen that dude NOT wearing an awesome shirt.

    I have a complete man-crush on Matt Pike. What can I say? He makes my favorite stoner doom. Also, I don’t give a fuck about the word “gay.” It is, in fact, possible to say it as a derogatory word and not be a homophobe.

      I got to see Sleep last Friday in Austin, awesome show.
      Managed to meet both Matt and Al Cisneros, both very friendly, down to earth guys.
      Both signed my ticket stub and Holy Mountain cd insert which was really cool of them. I was in the T-shirt line when Matt Pike passed by, it went like this:

      Me: Hey Matt, could you sign my CD and ticket stub?
      Matt:Fuck yeah bro, give it here!
      Me: Awesome! Hey thanks for coming down to Texas and for all the great music!
      Matt: No prob, thanks for the support!
      Me: You are a huge influence on my guitar playing and my music!
      Matt: (laughs) Well, that may change after tonight!
      (hands back signed stuff, puts his arm over my shoulder)
      Me: Alright bro, thanks for everything!
      Matt: No problem man, thanks for coming out! (turns, walks off into the crowd)

      They put on an awesome show, playing for about two hours. They played almost the entire Holy Mountain, and the first and last parts of Dopesmoker plus one cover and one new song. It was absolutely fucking amazing! I’m still smiling after seeing and meeting them. Matt Pike-Best Dude Ever.

          My hope is that they will come back around again and fill in some cities that they didn’t hit the first time around. I don’t know about the other cities, but tickets to the Austin show sold out rather quickly, and were being sold on craigslist for 100 bucks (face value, 22 bucks).
          Hopefully they will realize that there is a demand for more shows. Crossing my fingers for a Houston show. If you do get a chance to see them, GO! It was a religious experience. The venue (The Mohawk) was awesome, ran into John Perez of Brainticket/Solitude Aeturnus fame, and Kyle and Bryan of The Sword, who were leaving for Australia the next day. And since the venue was outdoors, smoke clouds galore!
