PROTEST THE HERO’S NEW ALBUM ARTWORK IS BLOWING MY MIND

For the most part you will never see me posting about album covers. It’s not that I don’t appreciate artwork, it’s just that in the digital age talking about an album cover makes very little sense; even if you see one that you really, really like, then you talk about how you really, really like it… what next? More than likely you’ll never look at it again because listening to that album no longer necessitates picking up a physical object with that piece of artwork on it. Maybe you’ll see a tiny thumbnail on your iPod or in the corner of your iTunes window but that’s it. It’s not “covering” up anything — it’s just a random piece of art attached nebulously to the music. For this reason I believe that talking about album artwork is pretty much irrelevant in 2011, even if you enjoy the artwork.

But fuck me naked with a spoon if the cover for Protest the Hero’s new album Scurrilous — which we found out yesterday will come out on March 22nd — isn’t the coolest looking thing I’ve seen in a while. We should expect no less from Protest the Hero; these are guys who pay the utmost attention to the details of their music. So what in the fucking fuck is going on in this beautiful watercolor painting?? Let’s take a look:

To start, we’ve got a dame in a tree with a frog-like tongue making a play at a spider for dinner. One of her shoes has fallen off, and is laying next to the spider. Is she some kind of frog-woman? She’s kind of sitting like a frog. Now that I look a little more closely, her tongue kind of turns black at the very tip of it… it’s almost like the spider IS her tongue! Woah! Scary!

In the middle-ground we’ve got some ducks, deer, geese, an elephant and a big cat of some kind, and they all appear to be running away from the spider-tongued frog woman. There’s a black bear in the lower right corner checking out the situation; he doesn’t seem too scared. Also un-scared are the two peacocks hanging out in the tree, surveying the mayhem below. Next to them is a snake with his mouth agape; not sure what his deal is.

Let’s see what Google Dictionary has to say about the meaning of the album’s title:

scur·ril·ous Adjective
Synonyms:
adjective: coarse, vulgar, rude, obscene, ribald, abusive, nasty

1. Making or spreading scandalous claims about someone with the intention of damaging their reputation; “a scurrilous attack on his integrity.”

2. Humorously insulting; “a very funny collection of bawdy and scurrilous writings.”

I can’t see definition #2 as having much relevance to the album artwork, although that particular use of the word “scurrilous” does seem in line with Protest the Hero’s collective sense of humor. Perhaps #1 is more relevant; has frog-woman’s reputation been scurrilously attacked causing her to avenge the entire animal kingdom with her spider tongue?

It’s also entirely possible that the album’s title is unrelated to the artwork, or at least not directly related. Perhaps lyrical themes on the album will shed some light upon this crazy piece of art. Perhaps the artwork is based on some biblical story and I’m completely oblivious (definitely possible). Perhaps I’m completely overanalyzing things and the artwork is just some crazy concoction of the artist’s imagination, or it was based on a dream that he or someone in the band had. Perhaps…

Perhaps I have no fucking clue.

they always have great album art.

  • pigchop

Ahhhh, you are reading too much into this. It’s just some chick in a tree spitting on a spider. The other creatures are running away because no one likes to be spit on.

Maybe her tongue being a spider is some kind of metaphor for her being scurrilous? Cannot wait to hear this shit.

I LOVE that pic. The music’s gonna suck though.

Your statement is beyond stupidity. They write more intelligent, engaging, complex music than any piece of shit “music” you put on your ears.

      • gnarlk

YOUR statement is beyond stupidity. They write more bland, noodley, needlessly complex music than any piece of shit “band” jizzed over on this site.

The chick kinda looks like Uma Thurman.

  • ceth carter

Not saying the art is good or bad either way but this is one of those Metalsucks favorites that could shit on a plate and it would blow the minds of the staff.

    • gsdg

      You just now realized this?

  • http://jeffdaniels80@gmail.com eat5hitup

yeah i think the last line you said is completely true. You don’t have a fucking clue. Instead of just rambling about how unimportant album artwork is anymore, and then proving that its obviously of no importance to you by picking the image apart only to compare which animals are scared and which are less scared. I think you should have someone who knows something about the bands artist or art in general to write an article like this. Album artwork is still as important as it ever was, maybe not to you but maybe to people who realize this is probably not a watercolor painting, it looks more like a digital collage from older works. A good start for an article like this would be to find out who made this artwork and give them a few sentences to clearly explain what they were going for, and then we can decide if we like it and you seem like a lot less of an idiot. Sorry I loved Metal Sucks but man this article was shit.

    • Poo-Scented

I’m with you on this one. Album artwork is VERY important. It gives the listener something visual to associate the sounds with. Sometimes, if the artwork is really good, the music will make the listener think of the images on the cover, especially the colour. When I think of/listen to Ride the Lightening, I associate the music with the colour blue. Peace Sells = orange. Baroness – Red Album = Purple… I mean red. And so on.
Go ahead ignore the artwork, but don’t say its irrelevant, because its not.

      • http://www.metalsucks.net Vince Neilstein

All the albums you just named came out in an era when album artwork WAS important. The one modern album you named has a friggin’ color in the title. Great job proving my point!

        • Poo-Scented

Okay, fair enough. How bout Pelican – What We All Come to Need -> Red. Porcupine Tree – Fear of a Blank Planet – Blue. Songs for the Deaf – Red. DTP – Addicted ->White. SYL – The New BLACK -> white. Tesseract – Concealing Fate -> white. And yes, many metal albums are black, but that’s obviously b/c the music/imagery is dark.

  • Metalguy

It’s a little to far onto the indie rock spectrum of art for me. Not saying has to be br00tal metul, but it looks like a hipster bands cover

    • Major Zim

haha then wont the hipsters be shocked when they find an album by some band theyve never heard of before, take it home feeling smug that theyve found this band before anyone else, only to have fucking metal get blasted at them as soon as they turn it on. I think it’ll be good for them to finally hear good music.

  • CtrlZ

Damn, march is gonna be a great month for music.

    • AdamS

So many bands that I really like seem to be releasing albums in March, this album being one of them. It’s gunna hit the wallet hard I think!

  • Major Zim

may i just point out that a) the spider is not a spider. it has 6 legs not 8 so its an insect of some sort as opposed to an arachnid, and b) it also seems to have the head of a mouse or some shit. very strange. my guess is that her tongue is like those of deep sea fish and shes using it as a lure but this strange woman is so wrong (or vulgar, obscene or scurrilous [see what i did there?]) that the animals are fleeing from her. although really i have no fucking clue either. either way this artwork is badass and i cant wait for new PTH.

    • pigchop

In the realms of all that is far out and fantastic, there are no rules governing the number of legs an arachnid might possess.

  • http://www.thejamminjabber.com thejamminjabber

The style reminds me of a nicer, brighter version of Hieronymus Bosch.

    • Cryptosis

But I would have to say it has a much more ancient Indian art kinda vibe…

      • Seb

Nail on the head. Stylistically this is a throw back to traditional Indian art, but there are some western symbolic elements as well, mostly the fauna and flora.

I have to disagree on the assumption that album art has lost it’s importance. I think it comes down to which sense one places importance on and whether or not your the type of person to want to dig deeper into the meaning of an album by way of visual cues or symbolism.

I’m a very visual person. Nice artwork makes the difference between me purchasing a CD or just downloading it ( provided i like the band and the music they make of course).

    • http://thenumberoftheblog.com/category/stoner-sunday/ Gaia

Hah, I had the same thought. Continuing on the vague Cathedral association, the pastel colours used in this artwork reminds me of The Guessing Game’s artwork use of colour.

  • Curmudgeon

I don’t think I’ve ever even listened to a song by this band but I really want this album now.

  • Ton

”If you’re still looking for an explanation behind both the title and the cover, we’ve learned that the cover is actually 60-year-old painting by bassist Arif Mirabdolbaghi’s grandfather Jafar Petgar. The painting’s title? Scurrilous.”

    • Steve O

Damn, was gonna post mentioning that but you beat me to the punch.

  • Isaac

Album art? Irrelevant? Not to me, it ain’t. I fucking love that shit.

  • David

Yeah, my favourite bit in the bible is where a lady in a tree eats a spider, whilst deers run about. And there’s a fuckin’ leopard somewhere. Shit’s awesome. I love the Bible.

  • http://www.dustypeterson.net Dusty P.

Shame that people are so blatantly scoffing at the concept of album art these days. I realize that it’s “the digital age”, but I can’t imagine a day when everyone just listens to music via a spreadsheet-music list with no thumbnail. That is really depressing to me.

The cover artwork is and always will be the identity of the the album that it represents. It’s still the first thing I look at, even if it’s pixels.

I know this post is about a specific piece of artwork (and I agree, it’s great artwork), I think the digression that album artwork is essentially pointless was rather tasteless. There’s a lot of artists out there that are just as passionate about metal as the musicians themselves. If *you* don’t care about it, fine, but to essentially say its entirely pointless as a whole?

    Come on. Show some respect.

That’s no spider. It only has six legs.

  • Jesses_Jams

those aren’t peacocks. they are pheasants. and PTH kicks fucking ass!! i saw them live once before i knew who they were and they fucking destroyed the place! it was right around the time that high school musical was popular and one of the main actresses got caught with her naughty bits in a photograph or two. so anyway, at the PTH show, rody is doing his between song banter and anounces, “THIS SONG’S CALLED, POCKET FULL OF TEENAGE VAGINA!” in light of the recent event. needless to say, it was HILARIOUS and i ended up trying to google that song title ( i didn’t know if he was serious or not because i had yet to be exposed to chode’s brand of humor) great night nonetheless \m/
