A NEW MORBID ANGEL SONG! WELL, REALLY JUST THE DRUMS… BUT STILL!!!

Monday, March 7th, 2011 at 3:00pm by

Last month, I got the following e-mail from reader Ceth Carter, regarding the fact that Tim Yeung is currently operating as the drummer for Morbid Angel while Pete Sandoval recovers from surgery:

“Do you think its possible to have a real Morbid Angel album without Sandoval? I know David Vincent and Steve Tucker have been back and forth and it has worked in both cases and even Erik Rutan has been in and out but I can’t imagine a Morbid Angel record without Trey Azagtoth or Pete. Tim Yeung is as amazing as they come on drums but it doesn’t sound right. Any insight on this?????”

Well, Ceth, I know how Sergeant D. feels about Sandoval, but, no, I do not have any insight on this. However, I do have the below video of Yeung playing a new Morbid Angel song at a drum clinic recently. So maybe you could watch it and see what you think? It sounds pretty promising to these old ears, but I think you have a lot more invested in this emotionally than I do.

Soooo… what do we think?

Tim’s swivel technique is insane. “Rapture” and “Maze of Torment” sounded supercharged @ the Scion Rock Fest.

    • treghet

Agreed. He was playing fast as hell.

I’m with D. Sandoval’s boring as shit, dude

  • ceth carter

Shit video but that does sound promising to these old ears as well. Tim has some real skills for sure. He almost makes it look to easy. He looks like he is just hanging out and its the easiest thing he has done all day. I guess a Morbid Angel album without Sandoval just kinda seems weird to think about. Maybe Yeung will charge a little bit of new life into them.I will be giving it a good long listen when it comes out for sure.

It’s not just the drums… the guitars I could barely hear sounded good!

    Should have gotten Lars

How the mighty have fallen. That song sounds awful, and Yeung is probably one of the least interesting drummers I could think of, there’s so many better in metal.

Sergeant D needs to shut up about Pete Sandoval, Pete could drum circle around the drummer of The Acacia Strain talk about boring breakdown after pointless breakdown.

Does anyone else find it really irritating that he has to play with a click in order to play along to the pre-recorded backing tracks? I mean I know he’ll play to a click when he’s in the studio because modern metal albums are sterile lifeless jerkoff sessions but still…for a demonstration?

    • Mouthful of Precious Stones

it’s a demo at a drum clinic dude, he’s going to play to a click track. He most definitely doesn’t NEED to play with a click track, but when you’re trying to be as technically flawless as possible you’re going to play with a click

      • Clint

The question is WHY he doesn’t listen to the click track with an in-ear monitor? Someones got a fever and the only cure is more cowbell?

        • Edika

As stated this is drum clinic one important aspect of any would be or accomplished musician is to play with a metronome, i.e. playing in rhythm. By showing this to the people is to show them how accurate his playing is and also reinforce this idea. To many people focus on talent and forget all the hard work applied to reach at this level of musicianship and its not bad to be reminded of that in any given circumstance.

And mister Booze if you think that playing with a metronome makes an album sterile in modern productions you should look into it a bit more before saying anything you read on the interwebz.

          • Clint

Nah, ……….hearing the click sucks shit. Sorry. It doesn’t reinforce anything for the listener. It’s just distracting. Play with your metronome at home, retard. I don’t need to hear that shit.

          • Edika

@Clint For someone wanting to enjoy the song I agree it is annoying. For the drummers attending the clinic I think it is very useful and passes also a valuable message. It can also show them how tight his drumming actually is.

  • Icewind666

Mister Booze I was thinking the same thing. Kinda sad.

  • alex

YEah…gee, playing with a click-track. How dare a drummer want to be on time and tight for a drum clinic.

i was going to talk shit about how easy the drum parts were until i got to the half way point. Sounds pretty killer!

Click track is the key to a great performance. any band that dose not play to a click probably likes to get drunk before playing, has a uneducated and unprofessional drummer. with all the dumb ass singers and shitty bass players it is much harder to play with a click than to just go at it. the drummer keeps the band on spot. Nothing else.

I thought the cowbell click track was part of the song…. real “derrr derrrrr” moment for me. Other than that, the drumming sounds pretty Morbid Angel-y to me, especially the slow down towards the end. The only thing I’m not liking is the double bass drums. They sound like typewriters, I was really hoping that trend would be dying off by now.
