ARE LATINOS BORN 2 MOSH??? [VIA METAL PESADO]

Monday, August 29th, 2011 at 5:00pm by

¿¡Q-VO, CULEROS?! Te gustan EL MOSH?! Pienso que sí! Escuchame si te quiero EL MOSH tambien!!!

As you can tell from my terrible Spanish, I’m just a dumb güero who can barely tell a tamale from a taqueria. I might not be the master of foreign languages, but I do know that Latinos always been a big part of metal/punk/hardcore (even though nobody ever talks about it). Not only that, but Latinos might be a driving force in the future of the genre — in fact, I think the next big thing will be middle-class white kids jocking Mexicans!

In this post, I will discuss the past, present and future of Latinos in metal/hardcore/etc. Whether you’re a pinche white person like me or a Latino, tell me if you see things the same as I do. Feel free to tell me I’m an idiot/racist/troll if you want, but I would prefer legitimate discussion since I am genuinely interested in this topic.

Why is Mike Muir always wearing blue?? Why would someone want a 13 on their shirt, doesn’t he know that’s an unlucky number???

1) THE PAST: UNDERCOVER BROTHERS

Looking back on the past few decades, the overall impression I get is that Latinos have always been there, although I don’t think we knew it. I mean, the list of bands prominently including Latinos is pretty much a who’s-who of influential legends: Agnostic Front, Slayer, Black Flag, and Morbid Angel are obvious examples, but that’s really just the start. Which begs the question, if there are so many of them, why don’t we think of Latinos as playing such a big role in the formative years of metal/hardcore?

I chalk it up to two things:

  1. We didn’t know they were Latinos. Honestly, at that time I don’t think most Americans were really aware that there is such as thing as light-skinned Latinos who didn’t have strong accents. Remember, this was during an era in which Carlos Estevez changed his name to Charlie Sheen, presumably because he felt like he would be more marketable as an Anglo.
  2. Generally speaking, Latinos have never been big on identity politics or positioning themselves as outsiders As a whole, they have been more interested in assimilation and integration more than separatism, so while there were a ton of Latinos in high-profile bands, it flew under the radar because they never made a big deal out of it.

I think it’s pretty funny how so many Latino bands back then were accused of being racist (Slayer, Morbid Angel, etc). Not that Latinos can’t be or aren’t racist, but the white supremacist narrative doesn’t really apply, you know? In this case, the irony of calling someone born to Cuban immigrants anti-immigrant is pretty hilarious to me.

When it comes to sick 80s thrash, it’s pretty much a tie between the Germans and the many Mexicans, Nicaraguans, Guatemalans, etc in the Southern California scene. Although I loved Destruction, Sodom, and Kreator, there’s something about the slightly hardcore-tinged LA sound that I liked just a bit better. Evildead might be my favorite example of the “Mexicans in tight jeans with Charvels headbanging their balls off” thing.

A long time ago, I asked my Colombian friend if Tom Araya is from South America. He looked at me like I was crazy and said “Obviously, just look at him — he has ‘Chilean tortilla face.’”

Another classic example of uppity whites accusing a Latino-fronted band of being anti-Latino (their vocalist at the time was Chavo, aka Ron Reyes, and the drummer was a Colombian immigrant). OH THE IRONING! Why do white people have such poor sarcasm detectors??

I grew up on the West Coast, where Mexicans were obviously the biggest Latino presence, but I think it’s pretty important to note how much Puerto Ricans and Dominicans contributed to the NYHC scene. Check out Frank 151′s history of DMS for more details.

The Vandals are one of my favorite bands of all time, mostly because they are a punk band that constantly makes fun of punk. I’m also a huge fan of their bassist Joe Escalante, who grew up in a trailer in Gardena and is now the owner of Kung Fu Records, former attorney for CBS, radio host, and a judge in Orange County. Anyway, this song is about the tricky business of being a white dude who’s dating a Mexican girl (I tried this once, do it at your own risk for all the reasons outlined in this song). Also see “Pizza Tran” for some smart commentary on West Coast azn culture (srs).

I think of Brujería as a concept band about dumb white people who are scared of Mexicans. I could literally write a book about how many brilliant little gems are in their lyrics and packaging, but for now I will just mention two: naming their manager Pinche Peach and their label Kool Arrow.

2) THE PRESENT: PIERCETHEVEILCORE

The demographic shift in the metal/hardcore/etc fanbase is pretty undeniable, especially if you have been to a show anywhere in the West: brown people are running it. For example, when I was at the Revolver Golden Gods awards/shit-show with Axl and Vince the other month, we watched a seemingly endless line of Latin kids in Asking Alexandria and A7X shirts stream into the venue. Or at my grandma’s funeral in West Covina, all my little Mexican nieces and nephews were rocking skinny jeans, flatironed hair, DC high tops and Hot Topic/Pac Sun t-shirts. It’s not just scene bands: look at the members of your favorite brutal death bands and you will see a lot of last names like Diaz, Gutierrez, Valencia, Gomez, and so forth, not to mention the five zillion retro-thrash bands full of Mexican dudes in high tops and denim vests.

This is pretty interesting to me, especially given that one of the common criticisms leveled at metal/hardcore by snobby, leftist eggheads is that it’s an enclave for privileged white males. It’s even more interesting when you consider how underrepresented Latinos are in mainstream music/entertainment given that they are such a large portion of the American population. Other than a few notables like Selena Gomez, Demi Lovato and Mario Lopez who are stars that just happen to be Latino, most Latino actors find themselves playing overtly “Latino” roles (George Lopez, Danny Trejo, etc), while the metal/hardcore/etc scene doesn’t ask Latinos to “act Latino” (sing in Spanish, rep the Mexican flag, etc).

I’m not that into them musically, but if there’s any band that exemplifies what I’m talking about, it’s Pierce The Veil: middle-class, suburban Mexicans with flatironed hair, skinny jeans and Vans who make panties wet across all racial lines. Not only that, but the fact that rappers like Jason Derulo and New Boyz conspicuously rep PTV shirts in their videos illustrates another interesting point about the state of music, which is that the current generation of kids are pretty much genre-agnostic (ie, they just like good songs and really don’t get hung up on genres like my generation did). But that’s another post…

The Xibalba video = everything awesome about West Coast hardcore. Maybe the best hardcore video ever made? Breakdowns and blast beats bring together Latinos, white trash and azns- moshing is truly the universal language!

I just wanted an excuse to include a picture of Demi Lovato, the world’s most famous Mexican deathcore fangirl and my #1 celeb crush. <3 u so much Demi, holler at your boy if you ever wanna make a Winds Of Plague vocal cover video with me.

Vocalist ANGEL OCHOA = the most Mexican name of all time; Cephalotripsy = MOST CRUSHING SLAMZ OF ALL TIME

Aztec warrior imagery + brutal fucking mosh = San Leandro representing in style courtesy of LOSE NONE

3) THE FUTURE: VIVA AZTLAN!

As far as the future of Latinos in metal/hardcore/etc, I’m no anthropologist or whatever, but I see two big themes: first, you’ll see even more Latinos in both bands and audiences, thanks to assimilation. Second, I think white people will actually start being influenced by/emulating Latino culture in much they same way as they did with black hip-hop culture in the 80s and 90s.

Famous Stars & Straps is owned by Blink-182 drummer and Fontana native Travis Barker. Ten or twenty years ago, who would’ve guessed that not only could you buy shirts at the mall that looked like something your tío Sleepy would draw on the back of an envelope he sent you from jail, but that the brand would be owned by a white person?! The IE going hard as always #909

Alternative white people have been fetishizing black gangster rap for years. Is it just a matter of time before they start jocking cholo rappers? In b4 the singer for some stupid breakdown band from Ohio thinks he’s the most hilarious bro ever and one-ups everybody with an ironic THUG LIFE tattoo by getting an ironic SUR X3 tattoo.

If I had a dollar for every “tr00 hardcore” band these days that uses cholo-style art like this, I’d have, uh, tens of dollars. It might not be as common as varsity fonts, but it’s definitely something that you didn’t see 5 or 10 years ago, especially not from East Coast bands.

You heard it here first: I think the next big thing will be white kids jocking Mexicans. Famous Stars & Straps is just the beginning. On the one hand, that’s kind of a cool turning point for the Latin community, but on the other hand it will also be a bummer in that alternative white people will latch onto the parts of Latino culture that most Latinos would probably not like to be associated with: gangs, taco trucks, and so forth. For whatever reason, middle-class whites are fascinated by that kind of thing, so look for lots of annoying white bullshit, but I guess you have to take the good with the bad. I suggest we punish them by forcing them to watch an entire year of El Sábado Gigante.

Viva Aztlan! I welcome our new brown overlords! Who wants to teach me Nahuatl??

Apologies for going on so long, but I think this subject warrants it — are Latinos indeed born 2 mosh?? Why don’t they get any credit for being in so many sweet bands? Am I racist???How long until hipster dads start having ironic quinces for their daughters???

But in my opinion, the mexican metal scene is pretty bad, at least around here, every band is a Slayer/Metallica copycat or a -core wannabe or some terrible grind band. And they all suck, and not in a good way like this blog. We need more mexican metal, be it power, death, black or thrash or whatever.

Being a mexican myself and a follower of metalsucks from quite some time now, I can only say regarding this issue that yes….. Mexico has a somewhat big metal scene but unfortunately most bands suck big time…however, there are some really cool cds out there from mexican bands but again, most of those bands are now disbanded.

I strongly recommend check out this albums if you find them..

Agony Lords – The sun of the cursed ( with a sound vey close to Paradise Lost circa draconian times )
          Dies Irae – Naive ( melodeath )
Here Comes The Kraken – Hate, greed and death ( metalcore )
Voltax – Fugitive state of mind ( traditional metal )
          Split Heaven – Street law

Not joking; I was gonna write an entire book on Latinos in punk and metal. Publisher fucked around and wasted too much of my time and I moved on to other projects, but if anybody wants to pay me to do it, I totally will. I was gonna start all the way back in the 1950s with Ritchie Valens and bring it up to the present day. I wrote an article for the Village Voice a few years ago about how Latinos were representing in the retro-thrash scene, too.

      • eloli

The reason is very simple: back in the 40s, 50s and 60s, in Hollywood, Portuguese, Spanish or Latin American actors were only considered for very specific ethnic roles. Back then, the norm for performers with this heritages that could reasonably pass as anglos was to simply change their names, like Ramón Estevez (Martin Sheen), Margarita Carman Cansino (Rita Hayworth) and Raquel Tejada (Rachel Welch) did. Kind of what happens with fair skinned “latinos” in the US today. :D

I grew up going to metal shows in Houston, and there was always a humongous presence of Satanic Hispanics.  There was a whole little Satanic Hispanic scene down there in the mid-late 90′s where most of Houston’s metal bands were exclusively Latino.  I mean, it goes without saying, but most of Texas’ most popular brutal bands had Latino members.  And sorry Sarge, but Ruben Rosas might be the most Mexican name ever, fronting the most brutal slams ever on Devourment’s “Molesting the Decapitated.”

I’ve moved around all over the place since then, and there are always Satanic Hispanics and Latino mosh bros at shows.

And the white kids acting like cholos thing comes from white girls with daddy issues dating cholos and having half Mexican babies to piss off their fathers… Then taking the cholo influence into their own personal appearance… And then white dudes see white chicks with Latinos, and thus, dress and act that way to 1) score hot ass Latino chicks with big booties 2) Score hot ass white chicks that are out to piss off their dads.

Oh, and I think a Brujeria post is totally appropriate.  You should definitely write one.  I can help!

    • Christopher

Im from Houston as well, HUGE latino presence at most metal-related events. My high school band was 1/2 hispanic (2 of 4 members), and their respective families were always barging in on band practice, imploring us to play Maiden, Dio, Slayer, etc. Ive also always felt like if Metallica wanted to just play a stadium in Mexico city for like 45 days straight, they would sell it out (not that that is a good thing). Also, witness: Maiden at Rock In Rio.

DDDDude, latinos ARE the metal scene in Los Angeles. If you see a white dude at a backyard show, it’s because he is the bass player for a band that drove an hour to play that show. My homies band played a couple of shows with Suicide Silence and outplayed them. Maybe I’m was being biased but I was inclined not to share my weed with Suicide Silence because of so much hype they had going in our scene and I was like pfffft fuck these guys. But yeah I was there to mosh and smoke my high-grade herbals.
Sargeant D, congratulations on your first genuine article.

    • Sir Peras

Waaaaait a second amigo, Spaniards are not Latinos, Spaniards are Europeans. What you wrote is like saying British are Americans because they speak English.

Spanish people belong to a Mediterranean culture, often called Latin, ’cause, you know, Latin was the Lingua Franca spoken across the Roman Empire, which basically was most of the known land by then. That is different from the term Latino, which means Hispanic.

And after my boring, smart-ass comment I shall humbly retire.

      Buen post Sargento! Sigue así!

I’ll check Transmetal. You are probably right about a.n.i.m.a.l., I
haven’t heard their records in years. But if you think they suck, you
have to hear the current ouput of the bands they’re now: Carajo and
D-Mente, these are totally lame. Carajo could have been better.

Some of the bands you mention aren’t exactly what people in this

site would like but are good bands anyways. In case someone is interested in:

Rata Blanca is powermetal (but more close to Deep Puple/

Rainbow), the guitarrist is in the same vein than malsteem, not a

lot of keyboards. They are very popular in spanish speaking

countries. The older stuff is better, they’ve gotten cheesier with the

      time.

Hermetica (and the precent band V8) are a little vintage. The V8

albums in particular were recorded poorly (they weren’t backed by

any company). Claudio O’Connor (the singer of Hermetica, Malon

and O’Connor have a great voice). At this time metal was very

underground and mostly belonging to the lower working classes.

Hermetica is the band you should check if you want the more

      representative (in legacy) of Argentina.

Malon, O’connor, Almafuerte are more recents bands heirs to

Hermetica and V8 (all of them are related by one or more band

      members).

      I would add:

A.N.I.M.AL., they are belittled now but they were very popular in

the nineties, they even got an album produced by Max Calavera

(“Poder Latino” with Jimmy DeGrasso of Suicidal Tendencies on

drums). Their first records were good but they got a little trendier

      later (numetalish maybe).

Also “Los Natas”, they aren’t exactly metal but they do doomy

Stoner Rock. They are pretty “popular” now. Their best is “Ciudad

de Brahman” (produced by Dale Crover of the Melvins). “Universo

Perdido de los Natas” has some cool covers.

      • Elgomi

you must be argentinian. cool. rata blanca is not really power metal just classic metal.
Anyway just check out TRANSMETAL if u can find some, thats right up this sites alley. Good luck you will need it. Animal sucks and even sepultura site hermetica as an influence

wait I guess that doesn’t count whatever
I happen to live in the one county in MN where whites are the minority.  Oh boy!

This is an amazing post.  It’s completely true what you say about Latinos in Metal/hardcore/punk.  It’s not even something I think about on a day to day basis because I live in Southern Arizona.  Down here the fusion/adoption of hispanic culture is so prevalent that it virtually permeates every aspect of the culture.  Whether its music, art, food, language, and fashion.  I predict that we will be able to say this about the whole country in a few years.

  • drunksteve

Well done again D,I see no haters here,I’m white and this post was needed bad. Im from socal and reside in Arizona,so many latins broing down and playing shows with my band. Latin bros needed a post like this, dudes are down for the cause.

  • ibanezfan777

None of the white kids in my school liked metal they all listened to rap. Im a mix burro half white/mexican but yup all the latinos were the ones sporting the deicide shirts and playing in local bands.

  • Woop

What a coincidence, I’m seeing Cephalotripsy this saturday :D

  • eloli

In the US, “latino” seems to be a catch-all term used to
describe any non European (or, to be more precise, dark skinned) Spanish
speaker, mainly associated to Mexicans, Puerto Ricans and Dominicans to a
lesser extent. Being a “latino” myself, I don’t find the term particularly
offensive or racist, just kind of generic… I mean, culturally, Mexicans and
Puerto Ricans are as different from each other New Yorkers from Californians,
and if you compare say, a Chilean to a Colombian, it’s like they’re from
different planets altogether. Anyway, we can’t complain, to us “gringos” are
all exactly the same, put a New Yorker, a Texan, Southerner, a Californian and
a Midwesterner and to us, they’re all just jovial, naïve, robust guys who can’t
roll their rs correctly and always get mixed up when using the verbs “ser” and “estar”.
    :D

Really guys, don’t be so hard on the Sarge’s Spanish, we all
know gringos are genetically incapable of learning our language, it’s just too
complicated and sophisticated for them. :D

Back in topic, I don’t really know why, but what Sargeant D
says is completely true, we “latinos” do love heavy metal, a lot more than most
“gringos” and more than most Europeans… lots of bands discovered this on the
early to mid 90s, when they couldn’t get booked on a club on the US but they
were still selling out arenas (or stadiums) in San Juan, Bogotá, Santiago, Lima,
Buenos Aires and Mexico DF, as if grunge never happened… I guess that “latino”
metal audiences (at least outside the US) are not as trend oriented or divisive.
And yes, we were actually born to mosh. Hispanoamerican mosh pits are simply
insanely violent, compared to ours, gringo mosh pits are a sad, wimpy disgrace.
    :D

    • Trux

    Yo Sergeant D,

I was very pleased to read this article. Why did you forget to mention Dino Cazares and Raymond Herrera? Both are of Latin American origin and have played an important role in the development of industrial metal and whatnot.

By the way, it was kind of flattering that you mentioned my uncle in your short reference to Black Flag´s members. He is indeed an immigrant, but has lived in the states for so long, that I can hardly consider him Colombian. Plus he looks very American, I think.

    Greetings from Europe!

I´m from Chile. The first international show was Kreator during the Coma of Souls tour. They had to cut the set short cause everyone went nuts, tore the place apart and started throwing pieces of stuff everywhere. Things have quieted down a bit, cause everybody has come down here. Chilean metalheads mosh like there’s no tomorrow. Check on youtube any Chilean Slayer, Anthrax, Megadeth, Morbid Angel … or any show really, and you’ll see what I’m telling you. Proud to be a Latin metalhead. Thanx for the acknowledgement.

  • Emaytballs

I never really noticed latino influence in metal before. I live in Ohio, and the shows I’ve been(Crowd wise) to where dominated by white people, so im really interested in what a metal show would be like in California.

  • Oscar Aguiar

the latino scene is a VERY DIFFERENT thing than the latino living in america scene…

guys like chino moreno, dino cazares, tom araya, freddie madball are a great example of that.

anyone who comes to latin america will see we FUCKIN LOVE white metal

*much respect for everyone, but I’m a MEXICAN GUY and i don’t feel connection with them (dino, chino etc)

pd. I love metalsucks, I read you everyday

  • The_I

Not to be critical, but most of this article seems to suggest that Mexican kids are aping trashy whites, not vice versa. As a trashy white guy from Texas, I noticed in high school that immigrants and children of immigrants tended to group with their lower-middle class white classmates rather than blacks or more “mainstream” whites. It was the same for Eastern European immigrants and just about anyone with an accent.

My Mexican metalhead friends are what I miss most about Texas now that I’ve gotten out.

  • Cesar Gutierrez

Hey Sarge nice article!! I’m from Venezuela, and even though I really don’t care about Latin culture or pride o whatever, I think it was a really important thing to point out. Metal and hardcore, and even music in general should not be thought as something made for a certain race, fuck it, it’s all global right now haha. I guess it’s cool to see all kinds of different people add their own spice to my favorite kind of music ever. Saludos! and sorry about my weirdly phrased comment or whatever.

i just wanted to mention my fellow paisano peruano dave chavarri. not even half as known as tom araya or pete sandoval for sure, but i always found it cool that he drummed at one time or another for gothic slam, lääz rockit, m.o.d., merauder, pro-pain and ill niño. all of them second or third-tier bands, all of them awesome to my ears.

btw sarge, i don’t usually leave comments but i’ve been reading your stuff since metal inquisition (r.i.p.) started and it’s all the blogging i care for, srsly.

Latino is a lot better term than hispanic, mostly because it reffers to latin america, and it incorporates BRASIL, we dont speak spanish in Brasil, we speak portuguese, and everybody is really diferrent from each others down here, theres nothing like a “brazilian stereotype” we can look like asians, europeans, indians… very mixed fenotype, most mixed dna around, hitlers nightmare! also, you forgot to say about Sepultura and Sarcofago, great influences for thrash metal and black/death metal around the world. Very important latin-american bands!
