BREAKING: GWAR GUITARIST CORY SMOOT (AKA FLATTUS MAXIMUS) FOUND DEAD

Gwar guitarist Cory Smoot (aka Flattus Maximus) is dead. His band members found him deceased this morning as they prepared to cross the Canadian border. MetalSucks just received the following statement by Gwar mastermind Dave Brockie directly from the band’s camp:

It is with a sense of profound loss and tragedy that the members of GWAR must announce the passing of their long time guitarist and beloved friend Cory Smoot,  also known to thousands of metal fans worldwide as Flattus Maximus.  Cory was found deceased this morning as the band prepared for a border crossing.  There is no word as to the cause of death and the members of GWAR are completely shocked and devastated that this has occurred.  At this point there is no word on arrangements and the disposition of the remainder of GWAR’s current North American tour, nor are there any details regarding long term plans.  At this point we are just dealing with the loss of our dear friend and brother, one of the most talented guitar players in metal today.  We ask that our fans and the media be respectful of our request for privacy for those that have suffered this terrible loss.  A full statement will be coming in the next day or so, in the meantime please give your thoughts and your prayers to Cory, his family, and all the people that love him.

    This is crazy. I just passed up the chance to see them with ETID in Grand Rapids almost exactly a week ago. Obliviously ”One of the Gwar members may die soon, so you better go see them” was never a thought in my mind, and now I highly regret not going.

    This is really sad news.
    After a long line of Flattuses, Cory seemed to fit the bill perfectly. Not only was he an amazing guitarist, but his producer and engineer skills really shaped GWAR’s sound for the last several years. He had become an integral part of an epic band.
    He will be missed my many.

    Holy fuck that sucks! I just saw GWAR last week, I don’t know what to say. I’ve met Cory a few times after shows and he always seemed like a pretty cool guy. I know he’s been a big part of the band since joining close to ten years ago, playing a big part in both the songwriting and co-producing their albums at his own studio.

    I’m sure the band will soldier on – (Cory was the fifth guy to play Flattus) but it won’t be easy for them to recover.

    I wish the band and Cory’s family my sincerest condolences.

    Fuck, I can’t believe this – I just saw GWAR last week. Cory was the fifth guy to fill the role as Flattus, but he’d been with them for almost ten years now and really was a big part of their latter-day songwriting and recording process. I met him a few times after GWAR and DBX shows and he always seemed like a cool guy.

    Not into GWAR myself but you have to respect the creativity behind what they do. My condolences to Cory Smoot’s family and friends. Another one gone far too soon. This has been happening way too often lately; I don’t know if it’s a reflection of the no-breaks-allowed lifestyle (see Eyal’s column yesterday), the prevalence of substance abuse in the community, horrible luck and coincidence, or some of all the above, but I am really fucking tired of hearing about tragedies such as this.

    i can’t believe. this is the second time after dimebag darrells passing that such a genious dies that early. cory had such a fantastic style playing guitar. it was very inspiring for me. its always sad to think about how much fantastic riffs he would have written in the future are now lost to the world and every fan that loved his work.
