7 Horns 7 Eyes

Metal Injection writer Greg Kennelty and I have something in common: 7 Horns 7 Eyes wrote one of our favorite records of 2012! In my case it was my very favorite record of 2012, but who’s counting: us 7 Horns fans gotta unite.

The band stayed very quiet throughout all of 2013. So, sparked by a somewhat cryptic Facebook post announcing the band is working on new material, Greg reached out to vocalist JJ “Shiv” Polachek directly to get the skinny. Shiv told us about some member changes: guitarist Sean Alf is now back in the band (he left? news to me) and the new drummer is Unearth’s Nick Pierce. Nice! But here’s where it really gets interesting:

As far as our plans for releasing music, all I can really say is we are working on a very large conceptual work that will be split into 3 releases that are somewhere in the middle of being EPs and full-lengths. Lots of guest musicians are being talked to about playing specific ‘roles,’ and we have big ideas about the scope of the music. It’s going to be a lot more of what 7H7E already is. Longer songs, more lush ambient parts, more emotive melodies, more crushing heavy parts, and finally for the first time, blastbeats. We’ll finally have fast songs! We’re just amping up the drama and ‘epic-ness’ that we tried to achieve on Throes. We have about 30% of the whole project demo-ed out already, which honestly amounts to about 40 minutes of music right now. Not a lot in the scope of the whole project, but we plan on refining these songs until they are massive enough to deliver on 2 years of waiting.

A few random thoughts on the above:

1) SWEET.

2) Might could one of those guest musicians be Jeff Loomis? It’d be hard to imagine not given his relationship with 7 Horns mastermind Aaron Smith. Let’s throw Keith Merrow’s name around here too because of similar intermingling.

3) Given the progress of the album so far and the incredibly ambitious scope of the project it’s hard to imagine this thing will see the light of day in 2014 as hinted in the above-linked Facebook post, although ya never know.

By the way, Shiv’s other band Ovid’s Withering just released a new album called Scryer’s of the Abyss and it’s highly excellent! A+++ WDBWA fast shipping highly recommend for fans of 7H7E. Listen here.

So, new 7 Horns 7 Eyes possibly maybe sorta in 2014. Get stoked on getting stoked.
