Kerry King’s Enthusiasm is Overwhelming

Slayer - Business as UsualUsually, when a metal dude is trying to promote a new album, he promises that “It’s our heaviest shit ever!” or some other such cliché. It’s silly, sure, but it’s also totally understandable why they do it: they wanna get fans pumped to hear the new shit, and they’re musicians, not college professors, so cut them slack.

This being the case, I can’t decide if Kerry King deserves props for being honest or poops for being blasé when he tells Scion A/V of the new Slayer record, “I’ve been making up this music for thirty years… I think it’s business as usual pretty much.” Even when he goes on to utilize the typical sell words (“fast,” “heavy,” etc.), he never uses “est” to promise fans that it will be more so than previous albums. It’s like, “WHOA, Kerry, curb your excitement, dude! This is an interview, not happy hour at TGIFriday’s!” Y’know?

All joshing aside, given that this Slayer album will feature neither Jeff Hanneman nor Dave Lombardo, it would actually be nice if it were “business as usual.” Assuming King brought the same amount of enthusiasm to the writing and recording of the new album that he brought to describing it, we probably won’t be disappointed.

Slayer’s next offering will be out in 2015 on Nuclear Blast.
