Nobody, but nobody, does covers like GWAR. The closest thing they’ve ever had to a misstep is their recent cover of AC/DC’s “If You Want Blood (You Got It),” and even that was pretty good — it was just a little too close to the original for my tastes. But their covers of Kansas’ “Wayward Son” and Billy Ocean’s “Get Outta My Dreams, Get Into My Car” are all-timers. When the band makes a song their own, they knock it out of the park, each and every time.
Such is the case with the group’s latest cover, which also may be their least-expected one to date (which is really saying something): Maroon 5’s “Harder to Breathe.” The original makes me glad I wasn’t very nice to Adam Levine’s little sister in college. The GWAR version, recorded for Howard Stern, is a third as long as thirty times as good. Check it out:
See? Toldja it was awesome!
GWAR’s latest album, Blood of the Gods, just came out on Metal Blade, and is definitely worth your time. The band is also on tour right now; I saw them on Halloween and they SLAYED, so do not miss out. Dates are here. Finally, why not listen to our recent podcast interview with the band’s vocalist, Blöthar? Motherfucker is hilarious and crazy smart — remember, he gave a TED Talk!
