FEATURING MEMBERS OF MELVINS, RED FANG, JUNIUS, EXHUMED, RWAKE, ORPHANED LAND, HULL, EARTH, AND KILL THE CLIENT
Every year year, MetalSucks asks musicians from across the vast spectrum of the metalsphere (or, in a few cases, the almost-metalsphere) what their favorite albums of the year have been. Death metallers, thrash metallers, black metallers, stoners, grinders, and djenters alike have graciously contributed lists to MS, and we’ll be running them in groups of nine to ten musicians at a time two to three times a day for the whole week.
After the jump, check out the next group… we hope you enjoy seeing what some of metal’s heaviest hitters were into this year as much as we have!
Since summer and, thus, summer festivals are almost upon us, I thought I’d take a closer look at Sonisphere, one of the biggest European music festivals. Mostly because I wanted to do some research on it, since it’s the only festival in which I am indulging this year. Probably.
(Note: I don’t much like festivals, especially ones that are outdoors. The bands I like never play for that long ,and unless I want to be stuck in the way back, I have to suffer through all the other artists just to get a decent spot. Not to mention, the weather. I hate hot weather. I swear to God I was born with menopause, because I’m always having hot flashes. I try to spend my summers carefully planning my routes with air conditioning and avoiding any chance of getting damp that isn’t shower or pool/sea/any body of water-related. But no one likes a cranky, sweaty bitch, and I split my time between two especially humid cities, so I grit my teeth and steel myself for my few months of personal hell.)
The Sonisphere Festival has been around only since 2009, when Stuart Galbraith joined the events company Kilimanjaro Live. His idea was to hold a series of events that would change and adapt to wherever they were being held. That’s what is really interesting about Sonisphere — unlike a traveling festival with one specific list of musicians and bands that tour the continent, they have a changing roster of artists for each “territory.” In 2009, the Germany date featured Die Toten Hosen and The Prodigy, adding a more punk and house air to the festival, while the Sweden shows featured The Cult and Primal Scream to suit their audience. Of course, there are bands that headline each show (in this case it was Metallica), but I’ve never seen audience preference be such a priority for a huge festival.
When I interviewed Kobi Farhi, vocalist for the Israeli metal band Orphaned Land, last year, he had some really interesting things to say about the ongoing conflict between Israelis and Palestinians: he claimed that Orphaned Land “has a legion of Arab fans,” some of whom “have been thrown in jail” for liking a Jewish band. He also expressed an idealistic notion that music can transcend prejudices:
“We believe that music is the strongest tool to get people closer. For example, you and your worst enemy, you could both love the same band without knowing it. Once you realize this, then you see that it’s possible to have at least one thing in common with each other. That is nothing but a door for a dialog between the both of you.”
Now Farhi and company are putting these thoughts into action — they’re giving away their latest album, The Never Ending Way of ORwarriOR, for free, legal download to fans in Arabic countries.
Mazel tov to reader Noah Mezsick, who correctly identified the first night of Hanukkah’s trivia question — yes, Orphaned Land’s Kobi Farhi is the poor musician that I accidentally introduced to frum porn earlier this year. I hear he’s had nightmares ever since. I apologize, Kobi! In any case, Noah wins a mystery prize courtesy of Century Media, and a dreidel, courtesy of us. L’chaim!
Now… ONTO NIGHT SHTAYIM! (I think that’s Hebrew for “two.” If I fucked up, well, oops.) Here’s the trivia question:
E-mail your answer to axl [at] metalsucks.net with the phrase “HEAVY METAL HANNUKKAH – NIGHT 2″ in the subject line. All entries should include your name and mailing address in addition to your answer, and are due by 5 pm tomorrow (Friday, December 3) evening. Shortly thereafter we’ll announce the winner and post night 3’s trivia question. And while you don’t have to be Jewish to enter the contest, you do have to live in the U.S. What, you want we should go broke on shipping charges?

So last week some worthless human tampon stole a couple of guitars from Kataonia. And even though we all knew that the joke was the thief or thieves, since our main man Anso made sweet, sweet love to those instruments, we were pretty peeved about it.
Luckily, the guitars were recovered last week, according to a posting on the band’s Facebook page:
As much as I’d love to know the full story behind the guitars’ return — ’cause there’s obviously way more to it than this — I’m mostly just happy that it all worked out in the end. I don’t know what’s gonna happen to the culprit, but I think we can all agree on one thing: Anso should decide the punishment.
Don’t forget that Katatonia are still doing their MetalSucks-presented headlining trek with Swallow the Sun and Orphaned Land until October 7; you can get remaining dates after the jump.
Even some douche bag stealing their shit can’t stop Katatonia’s MetalSucks-sponsored “New Night Over North America 2010″ tour, which is roughly at the halfway point. That means that if you live in California, Arizona, Texas, Georgia, North Carolina, Kentucky, or Virginia, you have not yet blown your chance to see one of Sweden’s finest exports do their thing live (AND Swallow the Sun AND Orphaned Land, both of whom also rule).
Frank from Metal Injection recently sat down with Katatonia’s Jonas Renkse. He asked him lotsa interesting questions, but did not tell him how he’d like to spend a day together, which is too bad, ’cause now Frank can’t win a signed a guitar. Still, we love Frank, and this is a great interview, so check it out.
Remaining Katatonia tour dates after the jump!
“We can’t believe this,” Katatonia frontman Jonas Renkse announced between songs at their sold-out NYC show this past Friday, the third stop of their MetalSucks-sponsored U.S. tour with Swallow the Sun and Orphaned Land. “Flying all the way across the ocean to play for a sold out crowd in New York City… this is our childhood dream come true.”
Nearly twenty years into their career, these Swedes’ newfound success was the theme of the night. Of their 1.5 hour set no less than seven songs came from their latest album Night is the New Day. And this was no decision fueled by ego and stubborness; Katatonia knew exactly what they were doing, proven by the instant cheers that erupted from the audience whenever the opening notes of a new song rang out. The reaction to the new material was positively stunning; this is Katatonia, not Cannibal Corpse, so moshing wasn’t quite par for the course, but a whole lot of concerted headbanging most certainly was.
Katatonia’s MetalSucks-sponsored “New Night Over North America 2010″ tour kicks off today! Featuring support from the always-excellent Swallow the Sun and Orphaned Land, the Swedish metal legends’ latest trek is guaranteed to be a killer time. And to celebrate, MetalSucks is teaming up with Peaceville Records and Omerch to give away a Mayones guitar played and signed by played and autographed by Katatonia during the tour! How awesome is that?
Here’s how it’s gonna work:
Katatonia are awesome, and we’re pretty awesome, so when they were like, “We’re gonna do this awesome North American tour with two other awesome bands, Swallow the Sun and Orphaned Land, do you wanna sponsor it?”, we were like, “AWESOME!” And thus it was so.
And now the band has released an awesome trailer for the tour! I know, I know, tour trailers are not usually awesome, but this one is — ’cause it features critical praise from both us and — wait for it — Mikael motherfucking Åkerfeldt. And if you don’t take us seriously for some reason, well, Mr. Åkerfeldt is what the kids call “unfuckwithable.” Awesome!
If you don’t go to this tour, you’ll never have sex again. Get dates here.

Earlier this year I got to attend a pretty kick-ass Orphaned Land gig here in NYC; well, Team Metal Injection was there in full-force, too, and did what they do best, which is smoke weed and get drunk. And, oh yeah, they captured some awesome performance footage of the show, too. For example, check out this clip of Israel’s premiere metal act performing their song “Barakah”:
If you head over to Metal Injection, you can also see an interview that Noa did with the band. And don’t forget that Orphaned Land, along with Swallow the Sun, will be support for Katatonia on their upcoming MetalSucks-sponsored “New Night Over North America 2010″ tour starting this fall. Get dates here.

The last time I saw Katatonia was a truly unforgettable night, a Scandinavian metal boner-fest to be sure: they played New York City along with Swallow the Sun, Insomnium and Scar Symmetry. I also picked up my beloved Insomnium t-shirt, which I still get questions about (“When did Insomnium come to the U.S.?”). Truth is that I really wasn’t familiar with most of Katatonia’s music at that time so I couldn’t fully appreciate their set, but now that I’ve been versed in the epic ways of these mighty Swedes I’m very glad that I’ll get another chance this Fall when they return to the U.S. on the MetalSucks-sponsored “New Night Over North America” 2010 Tour. Swallow the Sun are tagging along in support once again (maybe I’ll get to bro down with their super awesome keyboard player!) along with Israeli prog metallers Orphaned Land, so this promises to be another night to remember.
In case you missed the dates when they were announced a couple of weeks ago, we’ve reposted them for your convenience after the jump. Check out Katatonia’s new EP The Longest Year, featuring one new song and a couple of Night is the New Day remixes, out now on Peaceville.

The MetalSucks co-sponsored Full Metal Texas 2010 just keeps getting better and better! Last week Animals as Leaders were added to the bill that already includes such illustrious acts as Darkest Hour, Fair to Midland, Iwrestledabearonce and Born of Osiris; now it has been announced that Israel’s Orphaned Land will be playing the show, too! And Axl just saw them kick-ass the other night. Good deal!
This completely FREE all-day show will take place at Emo’s in Austin, Texas, on Thursday, March 18. Set times for all the bands have been announced, and you can view those after the jump, so as to ensure that you don’t miss anybody you really wanna see. (And there’s a slot open for a “special guest.” Hmm… wonder who that could be?) PLUS, the first 666 Heinekens are FREE, so you’ll wanna get there early.
You can RSVP for the show here – doing so will make you eligible for VIP drink specials at the show, and will enter you into a contest from Eagle Rock Entertainment, who will be previewing two new Classic Album DVDs from Black Sabbath and Rush and are giving away a Blu-Ray player, a bunch of DVDs, and some other cool swag. You can also follow Full Metal Texas on Twitter for all the latest updates.
And here are the set times…
Video of Orphaned Land in Times Square Monday night courtesy lindersgirl, whomever she is.
The thing about Times Square is, it’s a total dichotomy of a mind fuck. It has absolutely nothing to do with what New York City is really like, but it’s one of the most recognizable and visited areas in NYC; great art is produced there every day, right across the street from cynical garbage cash-grabs; it has some really amazing restaurants, all right down the block from a Forest Gump themed eatery, Applebee’s, and the world’s most obnoxious McDonald’s.
Perhaps no venue better exemplifies this neighborhood’s tension between worthy endeavors and soul-sucking wastes of space than BB King’s. It’s named after one of history’s most revered guitar players, it’s clean, ticket prices tend to be reasonable (all things considered), and they host an abundance of metal shows, when they’re not busy with Beatles Brunch (yes that’s a real thing and yes a cover band in mop-top wigs is involved) or whatever. They also feature the city’s most dickish security staff (no moshing allowed), beer so expensive that even the bartenders will readily admit that the prices are stupid, and an incredible inability to produce decent sound for a place that is allegedly a music venue.
And somehow, it’s fitting that this is where I saw the Israelis in Orphaned Land and the Germans in Suidakra play Monday night.
Well I had a heckuva afternoon, what with a horde of Veil of Maya fans all e-mailing me at once to express their upset that VOM’s new song wasn’t up at the time we said it would be. But it’s up now, and we think that the track, “Namaste” – not “Dexter,” as our stupid audio player says – is terrific. You can listen here and join in on the fun.
Here are some other fun things that happened this week:
Have a good weekend, everyone!

Two Orphaned Land posts in one day! Oy!
But this isn’t an Orphaned Land post – not really.
See, as part of my Jew on Jew interview with Orphaned Land’s Kobi Farhi, I asked him to recommend some other Israeli metal bands. I haven’t had a chance to go through the list yet, but one of the bands he talked about was Whorecore. And MetalSucks reader “israelizach” recommended that same band to us just last week. And now, lo and behold, the MS Reader Formerly Known As Prince e-mailed us to point out that Whorecore have a new video, for a song called “Whore Baby” that I really think my mother would like. Here’s the video (some parts of it may be considered NSFW, depending on how strick your workplace is):
Orphaned Land’s “Sapari” might be the only song ever that makes me want to dance the horah and mosh (moshorah?) simultaneously. A portrayal, or dramatization, if you will, of such a universe-altering event is not the way the band chose to go for the video for this song, but, y’know, this works, too.
Orphaned Land’s new album, The Never Ending Way Of ORwarriOR, is out now on Century Media. If you haven’t already read my Jew on Jew interview with OL vocalist Kobi Farhi, do it before The Chosen People smite thee.
Wait, do Jews smite?

Oh, sure, we’ve done Jew on Jew with a half-Jew and a dude who has spent a lot of time in Israel and is a self-proclaimed “bad Jew,” but Orphaned Land vocalist Kobi Farhi? The dude is FROM Israel! He calls himself a “proud Jew!” With all due respect to Eyal and Mookie, on the Jew scale they can’t even touch Kobi. Hell, the guy has probably forgotten more about Judaism than Vince or myself ever even knew.
With Orphaned Land’s excellent new album, The Never Ending Way Of ORwarriOR, out today on Century Media, now seemed like the perfect time to pick Kobi’s brain about all things Jew-y. After the jump, get Kobi’s thoughts on everything from serving in the Israeli military to the conflict in the Middle East to frum porn. L’chaim!

With Orphaned Land’s new album, The Never Ending Way Of ORwarriOR, coming out Tuesday on Century, now seemed like a good time to take a look at some Israeli metal bands that aren’t as well known. Ready? Here we go…
I have absolutely no idea how to describe Orphaned Land’s new album, The Never Ending Way Of ORwarriOR. I almost wanna call it Middle Eastern-flavored power metal, but I don’t want visions of Axxis floating in anyone’s head. The album is considerably more distinctive than that; it really is a unique listening experience. And I’m not sure that calling it “prog” really works, either, although the band wouldn’t feel out of place on a Dream Theater tour. So let’s just call it “good” and leave it at that.
The album comes out February 9 on Century (at least on these shores – Europe gets it next week!), and now the band has announced a too-brief North American tour – only four dates! – where they’ll be acting as direct support for Suidakra. Suidakra put on a really, really fun show… combine that with this rare chance to see Orphaned Land play my hometown and, well, I’m already there.
Get dates after the jump. And above, check out part one of Orphaned Land’s electronic press kit for The Never Ending Way Of ORwarriOR.
