NEILSTEIN SOUNDSCAM: SHLOCK OF AGES

Neilstein Soundscam

UPDATE, 6/14, 5:23pm: A representative from Rush’s camp tells MetalSucks that the album came out this Tuesday, so the number below must either be albums that broke street date or they’re pre-orders submitted early.

Original Post:

The lesson of this week’s Neilstein Soundscam is that no matter how old something is, how many times it’s been re-released and re-packaged or how badly it’s been re-recorded, if a song was popular once there’s always going to be people willing to shell out for it again. Especially if it’s in the movies (or on TV). Take note, record labels: there’s money in them thar soundtracks!

Sigh.

Elsewhere, Fear Factory made a big splash with their second re-Dinofied affair while Kreator, Call Me No One, Marduk, Grand Magus and others all placed on the charts in their debut week. The numbers:

1 ROCK OF AGES – SOUNDTRACK
Last week: 18,118 (debut)

Who buys this tripe? A disgrace.

2 FEAR FACTORY – INDUSTRIALIST
Last week: 9,390 (debut)

Their last album Mechanize also sold around 10k first week.

7 ZZ TOP – TEXICALI – EP
Last week: 4,545 (debut)

There’s a new ZZ Top album? Want!

8 KREATOR – PHANTOM ANTICHRIST
Last week: 3,997 (debut)

Wow, I had no idea Kreator were so popular here. Good album.

15 MELVINS LITE – FREAK PUKE
Last week: 2,490 (debut)

I still don’t really get the whole “lite” thing, but whatevs.

19 CALL ME NO ONE – LAST PARADE
Last week: 2,183 (debut)

That’s approximately how many records I’d expect a Sevendust side-project to sell. All things considered, I think they should be happy with this number.

25 L.A. GUNS – HOLLYWOOD FOREVER
Last week: 1,581 (debut)

26 RUSH – CLOCKWORK ANGELS
Last week: 1,535 (debut)

Oh my god. That is a horrible number for Rush. Jesus. I haven’t heard much about this album so I just Googled it to make sure it wasn’t a greatest hits comp or something… nope, an actual new album. Wow. That is just… wow.

30 AGONIST – PRISONERS
Last week: 1,414 (debut)

That anti-piracy PSA clearly worked.

35 ARCHITECTS (UK) – DAYBREAKER
Last week: 1,178 (debut)

I had no idea they had a new album out. Anyone heard it? Any good? I still get this band confused with Architect from Syracuse.

53 MARDUK – SERPENT SERMON
Last week: 807 (debut)

54 CANDLEMASS – PSALMS FOR THE DEAD
Last week: 809 (debut)

I am confused by the ranks of these relative to the # of records sold. What the?

58 CIRCUS MAXIMUS – NINE
Last week: 725 (debut)

71 JORN – BRING HEAVY ROCK TO THE LAND
Last week: 535 (debut)

85 GRAND MAGUS – THE HUNT
Last week: 471 (debut)

Since MS reader Brian McCullough once again asked nicely, here are some numbers from albums released earlier this year (sorry bro, Iron Maiden’s En Vivo dropped off the chart I have):

32 SHADOWS FALL – FIRE FROM THE SKY
Last week: 1290
Cume: 16,177

73 MESHUGGAH – KOLOSS
Last week: 526
Cume: 34,334

84 ACCEPT – STALINGRAD
Last week: 470
Cume: 14,088
