Mastodon Enroll in Monsters University

So here’s some weird news: according to Metal Insider — and a number of other reputable sites — yesterday, while we were running our year-end lists, Mastodon announced via Facebook that they’re contributing a song to Monsters University, Pixar’s upcoming prequel to 2001’s Monsters, Inc. The post has seen been removed from said Facebook page, so I guess Mastodon jumped the gun in making the announcement.

While this will be neither Mastodon’s first foray into animation nor soundtrack work — they contributed a song to the Aqua Teen Movie and scored 2010’s abysmal Jonah Hex — this will be, to the best of my knowledge, the first time the band has waded into the territory of children’s cinema. And I can’t think of a better band to do it, what with their lofty concept albums about Moby Dick and mythical creatures and their proclivity for drinking heavily.

I kid, I kid. I’m actually beyond curious to hear what this little collaboration sounds like. I guess we’ll find out next year, when Monsters University is released. But if they get Billy Crystal and John Goodman, who voice the film’s star monsters, to contribute vocals, I’m pretty sure it will be the best Mastodon song ever, or, at least, the one most appealing to people over the age of fifty.
