Mein Klavier Brennt

“Mein Herz Brennt,” from 2001’s Mutter, is probably my favorite Rammstein song of all-time; there’s just something about the string section — fake though it may be — that is so EPIC, y’know?

So I was both nervous and excited to hear that the band had re-recorded a piano-and-vocals-only version of the song for their upcoming three DVD set, Videos 1995 – 2012. But not only does the song translate beautifully to this more bare form — it actually takes on a completely different, far more melancholy, and at times even disturbing, feel.

Check out the video below, in which vocalist Till Lindemann is dressed as The Crow while standing on the set of Saw (or something). I kind of wish my favorite member of the band, keyboardist/human disco ball/weirdo-even-by-Rammstein-standards Christian “Flake” Lorenz, was in here somewhere — I assume he recorded the piano part — but I get that adding a second person might have changed the entire feel of the clip. Apparently an explicit version will debut next week on this website.

Videos 1995-2012 comes out January 15 on Density.
