Cavalera StripesThis is an excerpt from a new interview The Guardian conducted with Iggor Cavalera:

“James Murphy approached me with the record idea, but eventually suggested some others. To start with, he wants only the two of us in the studio, like a metal version of the White Stripes. He also wants nothing but the two of us on stage,” Iggor told the Guardian.

“He basically asked me to get rid of the rest of the band. Cavalera Conspiracy has four members and two records. Murphy asked us to start from scratch as a duo. According to him, ‘this will come to be the heaviest record of our careers’. He promised me that”, explains Iggor.

“The last time my brother and I played together as a duo was back home, when we were still teenagers learning how to play in our bedrooms. I had some pieces of an old drum and he had his guitar. This new project feels as though my brother and I are coming back home, 30 years later.”

Okay, so two things:

  • When you hear that a guy named “James Murphy” is producing a metal album, don’t you assume it’s the James Murphy who is the former guitarist for Death and Testament and has since produced, mixed, and/or mastered albums by bands like Sigh and Lazarus A.D.? Yeah, so do I. It’s a logical assumption. But the article goes out of its way to identify this James Murphy as being the former frontman for LCD Soundsystem… who were not metal, like, at all. And I suppose it’s possible the author of the article made a mistake and it is the other James Murphy, I’m hoping that’s not the case. I mean, no disrespect to the metal James Murphy, but the idea of a metal album produced by the dude from LCD Soundsystem is just inherently like a billion times more interesting of a concept. I mean, we have no clue what the results could sound like.

  • Remember how Max Cavalera recently said that he wants the next Cavalera Conspiracy album to be a grindcore record? If they’re actually going through with that plan, then the idea of having the band be just the two of them is goddamn brilliant. At the very least, it means the band is really going for it, and trying to make something stripped-down and raw. I back it.

So assuming ANY of this actually comes to fruition, well… it might horrible, but at the very least, it should be really, really interesting.

Hopefully we’ll hear more about the project soon.
