Listen to the New EP by Brief Lives, Featuring Valient Thorr’s Valient Himself
When it rains Valient Thorr side projects it pours Valient Thorr side projects! Or maybe it just seems that way for the logistical reality that time off from any band inevitably begets new music from side projects. Dudes can’t stay idle for long!
In any case, it was only a couple of weeks ago that we told you about Revolving Beast, featuring VT guitarist Eidan Thorr. And now we get new music from Brief Lives, the band Valient Himself joined back in May. Here’s how VH described the band when asked about it then:
I don’t know. Its too new for me to decide. Their old sound was the DC punk sound. Now the songs Chris writes are way slower, atmospheric and more grooving. But still very catchy. That last run we did had buddies saying they heard everything from Fugazi and Quicksand to Can, Hawkwind, Soundgarden and Rollins Band. Shit, I don’t know. Its basically me singing for a punk band that started writing stoner jams.
So how does that description hold up to the ear test? Incredibly well, it turns out… like, freakishly well. The band just released an EP called VHS, and a music video — appropriately shot on VHS tape — of the band playing through all three of the EP’s songs, which you can watch / listen to below. I totally hear the Fugazi and Quicksand comparisons, and even the Soundgarden and Hawkwind nods. I dig!
