Sh*t That Comes Out Today: December 16-30, 2014
Hi MetalSucks reader! Welcome to 2014’s final Shit That Comes Out Today, your satanic bible of the rest of this year’s heavy new releases. We list ‘em, we spotlight ‘em, we link you to their preview jams and full streams — and everybody wins. And if we missed any legit new shit, we beg you to email us! Thanks! Now crank it up!
Codex Perfida (Iron Bonehead)
Release date: December 23
On a playlist with: Kalmah, Dissection
Listen Codex Perfida full stream (here)
Ah, Ireland. The most claimed lineage by Americans (probably) and least I think of for its metal (except North Korea)? Whatever, Codex Perfida is a death album as blackened as a fresh pint of Guinness. And as atmospheric as the feeling you get after having eight. Wait, does Guinness actually taste better at the brewery? Some say it does. I wonder if the same goes for metal?
Arrest Days (Witch Hunter)
Release date: December 16
On a playlist with: Doom, Infest, Crossed Out
Listen Arrest Days full stream (here)
Sometimes lovers of punk- and hardcore-influenced metal get the shaft. We’re all raving about shit and forgetting about actual real metal subgenres. And while Arrest Days is not the star-spangled album you’d want to represent its subgenre, you’ll have amaze-o fun listening to it. Siege Mentality dipped their toes into just the right amount of thrash, which should stir in the insides of anyone reading this paragraph right now. Cheers to you, by the way!
Do-Over EP (Evil Eye)
Release date: December 30
On a playlist with: Slayer’s inbred cousin, Exodus’ inbred cousin, Slayer’s inbred cousin’s wife
Listen “Mascot War” (here)
Rip-off or satire? It’s irrelevant to a band that calls itself “The Best Damned Thrash Metal Band In The World.” So joke may be the appropriate word, and as for the actual music, the word joke may be too lenient. More accurate would be “turd,” or “hellstorm of meconium.” No surprise if Lich King was just Tom Araya and Kerry King wearing red clown noses and smacking each other’s asses with Wiffle bats?
It’s important to eat Taco Bell every so often just to test your body. The same goes for Skybound. You won’t really know how delicious that filet mignon is unless you’ve experienced the sad opposite. That pint of Ben and Jerry’s? Try some Dippin’ Dots first. Breathing air? Breathe fart gas. Which is preferable to the Darkfall EP.
If you don’t like The Dead Of The World, you probably don’t like black metal. It’s as if 2011’s Consolamentum wasn’t sick enough — Ascension had to add more dizziness, darkness, disorder and sadness to their already huge wall of noise and emotion. Think Krallice and Spectral Lore (who topped my list of 2014’s best metal albums).
