NervecellNervecell
Psychogenocide (2011) (Unique Leader)
On a playlist with: Cannibal Corpse, Bilocate, Vader
Listen “Amok Doctrine” (here)

Any dude who wears a Cannibal Corpse shirt knows that metal can’t just be about complicated architecture, it’s gotta be about mood, power, intensity, etc. Now, when you construct a solid mood and beastly riffage, then you’ve got something. That’s Dubai’s Nervecell (though I vote against their nu-metal-type name) and their new-old album, Psychogenocide (ditto).

If These Trees Could TalkIf These Trees Could Talk REDIf These Trees Could Talk
Above The Earth, Below The Sky reissue (Metal Blade)
Red Forest reissue (Metal Blade)
On a playlist with: Russian Circles, Pelican, Isis
Listen “What’s In The Ground Belongs To You” (here) “They Speak With Knives” (here)

Reissues can be newsworthy “shit that comes out today,” like the awesome first two albums by If These Trees Could Talk. From 2009 and 2012, they’re the softer side of post-metal and not distant from post-rock. There’s a bit of heft.

Periphery - Juggernaut Omega Largeperiphery - alpha largePeriphery
Juggernaut: Alpha | Juggernaut: Omega (Sumerian)
On a playlist with: Intervals, Monuments, Bulb
Listen Alpha full stream (hereOmega full stream (here)
Read David Lee Rothmund MetalSucks Juggernaut review (here)

Here’s a juicy appendix to my review of the new double album by Periphery: It’s an incredibly deft pairing of pop and metal. A listener doesn’t have to give a damn about pop or anything “poppy” to really appreciate what’s at work here. It’s an amazing accomplishment. Read my review!

Xibalba - Tierra Y LibertadXibalba
Tierra Y Libertad (Southern Lord)
On a playlist with: Lord Mantis, Harm’s Way, Bathory
Listen Tierra Y Libertad full stream (here)
Read Excretakano MetalSucks review (here)

Xibalba’s weapons-grade fuck-you-up metal is metallic hardcore and the sinister scum vibe of Lord Mantis. You get that full ride experience, the feeling that even if they tried they couldn’t have been more intense. Squint eyes, make mean face, mutter “metal as fuuuu!”

·

Ascension The_.Dead_.Of_.The_.World_.Cover_Ascension
The Dead Of The World (Season Of Mist)
On a playlist with: Krallice, Woe, Castevet
Listen “Deathless Light” (here)

An album that hooks you instantly. That’s The Dead Of The World, Ascension’s second full-length. It’s modern black metal, so the mood and intensity is cranked, but with no resultant loss in sadness, delicacy, and darkness. And damn, those drum-filled shifts from segment to segment in “Deathless Light” are goosebumps. Crank it!

Black Sheep Wall -- I'm Going to Kill MyselfBlack Sheep Wall
I’m Going To Kill Myself (Season Of Mist)
On a playlist with: Koloss, Gaza
Listen I’m Going To Kill Myself full stream (here)

Somebody can explain to you how shitty their life is, but you may only get that weird desire to empathize that’s counteracted by your inability to do so. That’s the baseline vibe of I’m Going To Kill Myself (note the “heh” reaction you get from the album art). This is an intense listen, even if it makes you feel a bit out of place. Also, the final track (30+ minutes long) is titled “Metallica.”
