Liturgy - The Ark Work

Hi MetalSucks reader! Welcome back to Shit That Comes Out Today, your satanic bible of this week’s heavy new releases. We list ‘em, we spotlight ‘em, we link you to their preview jams and full streams — and everybody wins. And if we missed any legit new shit, we beg you to email us! Thanks! Now crank it up!

Liturgy - The Ark WorkLiturgy
The Ark Work (Thrill Jockey)
On a playlist with: Altar Of Plagues, Botanist, Wolves In The Throne Room
Listen The Ark Work full stream (here)
Watch Crash Thompson MetalSucks video review (here)

Love ’em or hate ’em, Liturgy is not going away. To the right people, that’s a good thing: Liturgy is and always will be unmistakably Liturgy, and demonstrably a fantastic band. There’s already plenty to read/watch about The Ark Work, so your best bet is to listen to this very outrageous album and then form your own equally outrageous opinion!

Siamesian (To Exist)
On a playlist with: Soilwork, Twelve Step, Destrage
Listen Siamesian full stream (here)

Where the fuck has metalcore been? On an Italian vacation! Despite sounding super melo-death (those guitars), there are non-metal influences abound like, um, radio rock (see: those vocals, and that name). And immediately many will recoil in horror, which is okay, because Siamesian isn’t that great of an album. But at least it’s catchy as fuq!

Five Horizons (Hummus)
On a playlist with: The Ocean, Intronaut, Cult Of Luna
Listen Five Horizons full stream (here)

So imagine a more experimental, blackened The Ocean. You’d be interested, considering that experimentation is fun and The Ocean (and most soundalikes) kick ass. NevBorn almost gets there, but falls kind of flat. But hey, at least with Five Horizons you can get a glimpse!

Grow (Sumerian)
On a playlist with: Animals As Leaders, Cloudkicker, Scale The Summit
Listen “Knot” (here) “Drift” (here)

Ah, soothe me baby. Grow is like an oiled footrub on a bear rug by a crackling fireplace. CHON is still decisively metal, but must more like an unplugged and stoned Tosin Abasi than high-powered singulars like Cloudkicker. “Stimulating mood metal” is where you’d find it at the library.

Grindcore (Unspeakable Axe)
On a playlist with: Napalm Death, The Drip, Pig Destroyer
Listen Grindcore full stream (here)

So you’d have to be pretty ballsy to name your album after a genre. What (ir)responsibility. Luckily, Grindcore is actually grindcore as fuck, and so lives up to the name. It’s fast, hard, br00tal, etc. All expectations are met. A key song “Faith Is A Hearse,” however, proves that Grindcore is just a bit more than grindcore, which we like too!

Der Weg Einer FreiheitDer Weg Einer Freiheit
Stellar (Season of Mist)
On a playlist with: Nocte Obducta, Imperium Dekadenz
Listen Stellar full stream (here)

If you haven’t been on the Der Weg Einer Freiheit boat, now’s the time (uh, their third album already). You get serious grade-A black metal meticulously latticed over a purely death metal framework, plus the occasional epic moment with tons of synth. Stellar is all that. And it’s this week’s tippy-tippy-top pick!
