Watch Obscura’s New Guitarist Shred Through “Septuagint”

0

Tom Fountainhead GeldschlagerFans of German tech-death wizards Obscura shed a collective tear when guitarist Christian Muenzner and drummer Hannes Grossmann announced they’d quit the band last summer. Sure, Steffen Kummerer had been the band’s sole remaining original member for some time, but Muenzner and Grossmann appeared on the band’s last two releases and many fans probably can’t remember an Obscura without them.

But ridiculously skilled death metal guitarists apparently grow on trees on Germany, and it was announced soon after Muenzner’s departure that some guy named Tom “Fountainhead” Geldschläger would take over on guitar. (Sebastian Lanser took Grossmann’s spot, although the band tapped Stateside super-drummer Alex Rudinger to fill in behind the kit on their ill-fated attempt at this year’s Summer Slaughter Tour when Lanser was unable to join them due to injury).

So how about this Fountainhead guy? What kind of chops has he got? And do they live up to Muenzner’s skills?

The answers to those questions are “He rules,” “Fucking awesome ones,” and “Yes,” respectively. For proof, check out this playthrough video of “Septuagint” that Gear Gods shared from Fountainhead’s own YouTube channel. Pretty darned impressive, yeah? Here’s to hoping these guys can beat the crackpot U.S. visa system and find a way to get over here ASAP so we can see this madness live.

If you’re curious what Muenzner is up to these days, be sure to check out his new band Alkaloid (featuring a star-studded cast of other insanely talented tech-death musicians). Stream a track here.
