Listen to Babymetal’s New Song, “Distortion”

To remind you — as if you could forget! — that their world tour begins this week, Babymetal have released a new song called “Distortion.” The lyrics are 50% English and 50% Japanese; the music is 100% pure, unadulterated Babymetal. By which I mean, it sounds like someone gave everyone in Dragonforce cocaine and and then made them record while standing on hot coals. The only part I don’t love comes around the two-minute mark, when the song seems to be building up to a rad, 2004-style metalcore breakdown, only to, well, not do that. Seriously anticlimactic.

ANYWAY, here’s the group’s statement about the song:

“On April 1st, known as ‘Fox Day’, a new prophecy was revealed. The prophecy revealed that up until now we have only experienced the Light Side and there exists an unknown Dark Side, a legend of seven metal spirits, The Chosen Seven.

“The new song ‘Distortion’ explores the unrevealed Dark Side, The Apocrypha, the legend of seven metal spirits in which power is distorted through time and space. The music video of this song presents this unknown side and marks the important beginning of a new legend.”

Whatever that means.

Listen to “Distortion” below! Babymetal tour dates are here.
