Brann Dailor on New Mastodon Song: “It’s as Heavy as I’ve Heard Us in a While”

If you’re like me, you’re hopelessly stuck in the past and long for the return of the days when Mastodon sounded like a mastodon and not an octopus tripping its tentacles off. Well, good news for us sentimental old folk: the band has some new material coming our way very soon, and it may be a throwback to the Mastodon of yore.

Kerrang! reports that the band has a new song, which is “is currently scheduled for a digital release ahead of Mastodon’s upcoming UK shows (starting next week).” The first of those dates is Monday, January 14 — one week from today — so expect to hear some new Mastodon real soon.

But here’s the part that really caught my attention: guitarist Bill Kelliher calls the new track “brutal” and “a basher,” while drummer Brann Dailor adds, “It’s as heavy as I’ve heard us in a while.”

Now, granted, “as heavy as I’ve heard us in a while” is fairly vague, and one can argue that Mastodon’s bar for heaviness has been fairly on their more recent outings. But maybe it’s not just hype! Maybe the song really is a brutal basher!

We should know one way or the other with the next few days. ‘Til then, you can read more of the Kerrang! report here.
