Shit That Comes Out Today: August 23rd, 2019

0

It is Friday, my dudes. Whatever that means to you — whether it’s an excuse to get hammered, maybe the start of a much-needed weekend getaway, or even if it’s just another day of benign existence — we’ve got a compendium of the latest heavy tunes to keep you going.

Shit That Comes Out Today: August 23rd, 2019Book of Wyrms
Remythologizer (Twin Earth)
FFO Smoulder, Hawkwind
Full Album Stream

What do you get when you merge space-age prog rock with crushing doom and mind-bending psychedelia? What about when an ancient sorcerer and R2-D2 kiss under the light of the Cheshire Cat’s grin?Remythologizer, of course. Our undead pegasus friend from the album art should give us a good idea of what to expect: a dive into the rabbit hole of abstract sci-fi/fantasy met with crushing bluesy riffs and trippy, pastel-hued synthwork. Most intriguing, however, are the bizarre-o Moog-ish sound effects that crawl from the abyss and tantalize our eardrums, only to retreat again until they have the perfect opportunity to shine. Remythologizer will either put you to sleep or strap you up on a rocket to Planet Weird, and hey, that’s a win/win in my book!

Shit That Comes Out Today: August 23rd, 2019Wrvth
No Rising Sun (Unique Leader)
FFO Alcest, Møl
Listen “Eventide

If you’re idea of a good time is being sad, this album should have a reserved spot on your “Songs To Make Me Way More Depressed™” playlist (that’s a universal thing, right…?). No Rising Sun is as bleak as it sounds — melancholy, atmospheric black-core that pulls you into a world of uniquely post-modern pain. A perfect balance between polished and uncompromisingly raw, Wrvth’s performance is absolutely riveting, with jazzy drumming giving a highly sophisticated flair and vocals that sear into your mind with fiery desperation.

Shit That Comes Out Today: August 23rd, 2019Knocked Loose
A Different Shade Of Blue (Pure Noise)
Listen “Mistakes Like Fractures

Today’s the big day — the future-defining battle between Knocked Loose and Taylor Swift is officially underway! Whoever is able to sell more albums in the next week will determine whether our society remains ultimately the same (exploitative, boring) or descends into a Metalocalyptic free-for-all (productive, engaging). Either way, we’re doomed. May as well have some fun! A Different Shade Of Blue has everything you need to distract yourself from our inevitable demise: breakneck hardcore punk, beefy chugging, and tempo shifts for daayyzz. You know what Knocked Loose sound like, so you may as well just go right ahead and buy the record for a good cause.

Shit That Comes Out Today: August 23rd, 2019Isole
Dystopia (Hammerheart)
FFO Candlemass, Bathory
Full Album Stream

From the looks of it, Isole have never put out a bad album, and I’m amazed it’s taken me this long to come across the seasoned doomers, now seven albums into their career. Dystopia bursts with epic Swedish decadence from the get-go, with intoxicating riffs, soaring hooks, and anthemic catchy-ness that’ll have any Candlemass lover weeping with joy. Long story short, “fans of classic Doom Metal should beg, steal, or kill to get their hands on Dystopia.”

Shit That Comes Out Today: August 23rd, 2019Sacred Reich
Awakening (Metal Blade)
Listen “Awakening
Read our review

No strangers to the world of ’80s thrash, Sacred Reich have just put out their new album in over 20 years. “Shit, I’m old,”  you mumble. Well you’ll have to check yourself into a nursing home when you find out that neither I, nor the band’s new guitarist Joey Radziwill existed when their last album was released. Do the longtime Arizona metallers still have it in ’em?
They sure fucking do. With a notably exceptional delivery from frontman Phil Rind, Awakening tears the American dream to shreds and replaces it with empowerment and integrity. It’s thrash in its purest essence, seasoned with age but still bursting with furious vitality and a call to dismantle the system. Turns out bands can still make good new music 30 years into their career! Take notes, Metallica.
