Dee Snider is Angry Metallica Haven’t Been Asked to Play the Super Bowl Halftime Show

0

Every year around this time the NFL announces the performers for its annual Super Bowl Halftime show, and every year, like clockwork, a chorus of metalheads scream into the internet void about how metal gets no respect, and how Metallica should get the nod. They’re not wrong, but at this point I’ve just accepted that it’s probably never gonna happen because the NFL deems metal too dangerous or too unrelatable to the average American or whatever.

But not Dee Snider! Following yesterday’s announcement that Jennifer Lopez and Shakira will co-headline this coming year’s winter classic, the Twisted Sister frontman took to Twitter to lament the snub the NFL gives metal despite pumping its anthems constantly at games. And he’s certainly got a point.

Here are the contents of his tweets condensed for clarity:

“WTF!? @shakira and @jlo for this year’s @nfl halftime show!? Once again the great heavy music that rocks the stadiums week after week, game after game is completely ignored. I guess we don’t shake our ass enough!!

“My point about this years @NFL halftime show isn’t a slight on @shakira or @JLo, it’s frustration that week after week rock is the go to music during games but gets no respect when it comes to the Super Bowl! And I don’t think I’m popular enough for that slot. But @Metallica…

“Hey @NFL! Your go-to songs at EVERY game are metal: Enter Sandman, Cum On Feel the Noise, Thunder, Crazy Train, We’re Not Gonna Take It, We Are the Champions, Final Countdown, I Wanna Rock, We Will Rock You, Welcome to Jungle. NONE of those bands have EVER played half-time show!”

Who knows, maybe metal will some day get a fair shake at the Super Bowl halftime slot. If not Metallica, then perhaps Slipknot, who at this point are nearly as popular. But for the time being, Lopez and Shakira are a great combo, if you ask me — I’ll be enjoying that!
