Metallica Have Six of the Top Ten Metal Songs on Apple Music Right Now

Ever wondered how various artists from throughout the metal and hard rock communities stack up against one another when it comes to YouTube views, Apple Music streams, pure album sales, ticket sales (back when those were a thing… and when they become so again) and other metrics? Stream N’ Destroy is a newsletter that features all of those things and then some. Compiled by metal journalist and manager Ryan J. Downey, Stream N’ Destroy, which arrives a couple of times a week, has quickly become one of our most anticipated reads the moment it hits our inbox.

From time to time we’ll be highlighting excerpts from Stream N’ Destroy here on MetalSucks. Today we’ll take a look at the Top 50 Metal Songs on Apple Music as of June 23, which shows a lot of the same homogeneity displayed on last week’s top albums list. A few observations:

  • Metallica have six of the top ten songs, despite having not released new music since 2016, and 12 songs in the top 50.
  • The newest Metallica song, “Fuel,” from Reload, was released in 1997. Other than that, the most recent Metallica song came out in 1991 (including all six in the top ten).
  • Just four bands — Slipknot (8 songs), Tool (8), Lamb of God (7) and Metallica — dominate 70% of the top 50.
  • If we add Five Finger Death Punch (4) and Black Sabbath (3), we’re up to 84% occupied by only six acts.
