Smashing Pumpkins Sign With Sumerian, Release Two New Songs

Here’s two pieces of news I bet you didn’t see coming: the Smashing Pumpkins are now label mates with Born of Osiris and Veil of Maya, and they’ve released a pair of new synthwave songs.

No, really: the heroes of ’90s alt-rock have signed with Sumerian Records. And while you might assume that means they’re gonna be putting out some stuff that’s on the heavier side, the first two singles they’ve released under the label, “Cyr” and “The Colour of Love,” are one vocal re-recording away from being Robyn songs. It’s kinda bonkers.

Oddly enough, I think it’s also probably the Pumpkins’ strongest material in years. Granted, I stopped paying attention the band after 2012’s abysmal Oceania, but still. “Smashing Pumpkins pop music” is a phrase which I think will understandably send shivers down some people’s spines, and I’m telling ya, it ain’t that bad.
