Video: Members of Obituary and Power Trip Perform “Executioner’s Tax (Swing of the Axe)” in Honor of Riley Gale

Obituary paid homage to late Power Trip frontman Riley Gale during their livestream show this past Saturday, March 27… and they did it in a most-excellent way: they had surviving Power Trip members Blake Ibanez (guitar), Nick Stewart (guitar), and Chris Whetzel (bass) join Obit’s John and Donald Tardy (vocals and drums, respectively) for a performance of “Executioner’s Tax (Swing of the Axe).”

The track, I hopefully don’t need to tell you but will anyway because I’m a nerd, originally appeared on 2017’s Nightmare Logic, which is ended up being Gale’s final studio recording.

Needless to say, all parties involved nailed it. Not only does this “Axe” swing extra-hard (how much fun is it to watch Obituary guitarist Trevor Peres start his own little pit, if only briefly and humorously?), but it is also, if I’m not mistaken, the first time the members of Power Trip have performed together publicly since Gale’s death last summer.

You can watch the performance below.

Obituary will livestream another show — the one a performance of their third album, 1992’s The End Complete, in its entirety — this Saturday, April 3 at 5 pm EDT. Tickets are here.

Earlier this month, the Power Trip trio, along with drummer Chris Ulsh, gave their first interview since Gale passed away. As part of that interview, Ibanez revealed that “We do want to continue to play music together; we just are not sure what that looks like at this time.” So don’t think this is the last you’ve heard of Power Trip!
