Cannibal Corpse Vocalist George “Corpsegrinder” Fisher’s World of Warcraft Character Renamed Due to Homophobic Slurs

A non-player character (NPC) in the World of Warcraft game, originally named in honor of Cannibal Corpse frontman and WoW mega-fan George “Corpsegrinder” Fisher, has been rechristened following objections to Fisher’s past use of a homophobic slur.

Fisher made the comments back in 2007 at BlizzCon, the annual convention staged by World of Warcraft studio Blizzard Entertainment:

Blizzard president Mike Morhaime apologized for the incident in a 2011 letter to the website GayGamer. Still, The PRP reports that the outcry against Fisher started to gain traction again earlier this year, after Blizzard and its publisher, Activision, became “caught up in a wave of harassment and discrimination-related legal trouble, including a lawsuit filed by the California Department of Fair Employment and Housing.”

Consequently, the makers of the game have now changed the NPC named in Fisher’s honor, ‘Gorge the Corpsegrinder,’ to ‘Annihilator Grek’lor.’

Fisher, who reviewed the World of Warcraft film adaptation (titled simply Warcraft) for MetalSucks in 2016, has not publicly commented on the change.

Cannibal Corpse released a new album, Violence Unimagined, on April 16 via Metal Blade Records. The band begins a U.S. headlining tour in February; support will come from Whitechapel, Revocation, and Shadow of Intent. Dates are below.
