BTBAM’s Tommy Rogers Sings on New Track Written by Rolling Dice

Gear Gods ongoing ‘Writing a Song From Random Drum Grooves’ video series is back, and the latest entry features Between the Buried and Me vocalist Tommy Rogers!

The premise of the series is this: Gear Gods EIC Trey Xavier rolls dice to select different drum grooves from Toontrack’s expansive libraries for each part of a newly constructed song (one roll for the intro, one roll for the verse, chorus, etc.). He then writes a song on top of the dice-determined drum structure and sends it to a vocalist to do their thing.

The fun comes in watching the creative process: how do these folks work? What tricks can they use to motivate themselves to push through writers’ blocks?

The series is part of Toontrack’s annual Metal Month, which takes place every November. Several new products built specifically for metal musicians and recording engineers are on the docket for November, so stay tuned.

You can give the video with Tommy a watch below. The finished song appears at the 26:50 mark if you get impatient… but the entire video is a highly worthwhile watch for any songwriters out there.

The previous episode features Soilwork’s Björn “Speed” Strid and The Agonist’s Vicky Psarakis. Watch here.
