Actually, Mike DeLeon is a Temporary Member of Soulfly
Last week, news broke that Soulfly had found its newest guitarist when they recruited Philip H. Anselmo & the Illegals guitarist Mike DeLeon. At the time, it was touted as the first time since 2021 that the band finally had a full roster since Marc Rizzo left back in 2021.
It turns out, a major detail was missing when the announcement was made. According to a recent Instagram post from Soulfly and former Sepultura frontman Max Cavalera, DeLeon was added on as a fill-in. Moreover, there’s going to be other guitarists introduced into the mix to sort of treat the guitarist position as a revolving door.
“Just like we did with Dino Cazares, Mike is gonna join the tour for nine weeks. We’re going to keep introducing killer guitar players to the Soulfly tribe throughout the year.”
At one point in the video, Cavalera hilariously thanks Phil Anselmo for letting Soulfly “borrow” DeLeon, which almost entirely removes the guitarist’s agency in the decision, but that’s probably just a little flub given the fact that English isn’t Max’s first language.
So there ya go. Nothing’s permanent as of yet with that open guitarist position in Soulfly. Yet with Anselmo currently busy with Pantera proceedings and whatnot, who knows what the future holds for DeLeon once those nine weeks in the “Soulfly tribe” come to an end.
