Deafheaven to Mark 10 Years of Sunbather with Anniversary Edition, Tour Announced

0

Later this year, the ever-divisive Deafheaven will return to their early days with the release of a remastered and remixed version of their 2013 album Sunbather. Having become more of a shoegaze-y band in recent years, fans of their earlier and more post-black metal sound should be excited by the news.

As the band’s sophomore studio release, Sunbather has long been considered a spark that helped kick off an explosion of blackgaze as a subgenre. Naturally, the band’s blend of black metal’s harsher elements with big, soaring melodies led to some… criticism.

Looking back, founding guitarist Kerry McCoy said Sunbather was the album that changed everything for everyone in the band.

“Honestly, Sunbather gave us a career. Before then we were working jobs and had these grandiose dreams, but that was the record that turned us into a real band. Because of that record, we ended up meeting a lot of people around the world that changed our lives and set us on the path we’re on now.”

While releasing a special edition is great on its own, the band also announced a 10th Anniversary Tour set to kick off this fall, after a quick stint in the U.K. and Ireland next month and a North American trek with Coheed and Cambria running from September into October.
