Cannibal Corpse’s Paul Mazurkiewicz Debates Which Decade Was Death Metal’s Best

0

We all grow attached to the music we loved growing up, but there’s always a time in music when a particular genre really pops off. Some examples include the explosion of thrash in the early to mid 80s and nu metal having its thing in the 90s/early 2000s, but what about death metal? Sure it’s seeing a huge resurgence at the moment, but in which decade did it really shine?

That was the question posed to Cannibal Corpse drummer Paul Mazurkiewicz during his recent stint on Jonathan Montenegro’s My 3 Questions To YouTube series. As one of two founding members that have stuck around for the band’s entire 35 year history, the dude’s been around to see some shit go down in the genre. So even though he says it’s all been great, he thinks things were particularly special three decades ago.

“Well, all decades have been amazing for death metal — since its inception, since the start and up until this day. But I guess I would be partial to maybe the ’90s just ’cause it was new. It was starting out late ’80s, ’90, ’91, it’s rolling along, you got all these new bands, it’s a whole new thing. And it was just an amazing time because it was in the beginnings. So I would have to say the ’90s just for that reason. But, like I said, all decades have been really incredible for death metal and extreme music.”

Truth be told, his logic is sound. The early 90s death metal scene is totally un-fuck-with-able. From Death, Morbid Angel, Obituary, Deicide, Carcass, and even Mazurkiewicz’s own Cannibal Corpse, tons of iconic and timeless albums came out to insane amounts of critical and fan praise. Many of those albums still easily stand up against today’s shit, so he’s right on the money with his choice.

Cannibal Corpse’s new album Chaos Horrific will be available on September 22 via Metal Blade Records, but you can preorder your own copy today. They’re also heading out on the road next month with Mayhem, Gorguts, and Blood Incantation. Be sure to check out the full list of dates below.
